Channel and title caption remains on the screen...how to remove??
Hi all,
this just started recently but I have noticed that all TV whether live or
recorded has the channel and show title screen constantly displayed on the
screen. This used to come on when switching channels but then vanish after a
few seconds. Now it seems that it wont leave. I have all of the latest
updates and virus signatures so I am sure that there is nothing lacking
there. It should be just a simple config change but I cant seem to figure
out what would cause this.
Please help if anyone has any suggestions.

Programs running, but invisible...
This happened once with AOL, and now it's my Sony/Ericsson phone suite.
I click on the icon to open the program and the program appears on my
taskbar, but I can't see it. If I right click on the taskbar and alternate
between minimize and maximize, it looks like the program is opening in a
window out of view at the bottom of my screen.
When this happened with AOL, someone suggested right clicking the taskbar
and changing the tiling of the windows. This worked fine, but when I try it
for my Sony program, tile vertically and horozontally are greyed out. I've
already tried changing my screen resolution and restarting the computer.
BTW-- if this helps, on both occasions my wife had been playing a lot of
online Java games when this happened. Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180598
Media Player / Media Center error
I just installed Vista Ultimate 64. I have updated everything including
service pack 1, but media player still keeps giving me problems.
"Windows Media Player has stopped working
A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
The problem seems to be the reason media center is giving me trouble when I
try to use it:
"Windows Media Center has lost its remote connection to media player and
needs to be restarted."
I have exhausted my troubleshooting skills (admittedly limited) and have not
been able to correct it. I have successfully installed other programs (Such
as Catalyst Media Center) to test out my system, and they seem to work fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180595

Can't See My Musics in Media Center
I've been using XP media center for almost a year now, to play videos and
music, but just today for whatever reason, when I try to play my music, I get
a message that says
"Unable to view music by album/artist/song, (etc.). Either the music does
not contain album information, or there is no music in your Media Library. To
add music to your Media Library, press More Info on the remote control and
then select Add Music."
If I try to go and re-add my music folders again, it looks like nothing is
happening, it's not even accessing my hard drive. Has this problem ever
happened to anyone else? Media Center has been running fine for me all year,
that's why I don't understand why this is just happening for me now. Thanks
in advance for any help anyone can give. This is the first ever problem that

Video Playback Error w/ WMC and 360
Hi all,
I am running Vista 64sp1 with a wired gigabit network to 360. WMC was
working fine on 360 about a week ago. Now it boots up, I can see the guide
and recorded shows, but when I try to watch them I get Video Playback Error:
Files needed for video playback are not installed or not working properly.
Please restart media center or pc.
I am not sure if this happened when I installed sp1 last week or something
else caused it. I disabled and reinstalled 360, rebooted pc, etc., to no
avail. Any ideas? Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180587
Media center and Xbox 360 Wireless to wired issue
Hi and hopefully someone has a solution to my issues.
I have a Hp with Vista media center and it is running McAfee and Widows
firewalls. The problem is, I originally had my network set up as wireless
from my computer to my router and the Xbox 360 was wired to the router. I
wanted to increase my connection speed so I wired my computer to the router.
My previous setup allowed me to connect to the xbox as an extender without
any issues but he minute I changed to a wired connection the media center
won't recognize the xbox. It still appears on the network when you look at
the full map of network devices. I went through all the programs and made
sure that media sharing is active with the xbox. I changed to different
ethernet cables, disabled all firewalls, and everything else I could think of
to figure out what was wrong. I talked to the support for my router, HP and
xbox with no solution. I even called McAfee to have them help. I now refer to
you guys and gals for a solution as no one else seems to know what the hell
they are talking about and it is really getting upsetting.

Live TV no Longer loads - Guide Down load fails
After many months of WMC working OK., I can no longer open live tV. Clicking
on the Icon and nothing happens. When I go back through setup the tuner is

download and when it fails it gives error code 13. Obviously I am connected
to the internet with a valid connection so a look up on error code 13 was not
helpful. Any suggestions on a fix. my recent attemp to update all drivers

Blue screen after Installing Media Center
Previously, I had problems with my computer not shutting down properly and
the the "Blue Screen" (BS - hope that is an ok abbreviation) of death. I
re-did the whole system. Everything was great; a lot faster too.
Then, I installed Media Center. Again, the computer would not shutdown
properly and I again have the BS again. I get the error message in the BS
mode - DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. The computer then goes through the whole
hard drive and checks it out. When the computer comes up again Microsoft
tells me it is caused by NVidia Grahics Driver. I have update the driver and
also the Motherboard. I still have the problem and do not know what to do
about it.
I have another question. I have an ATi HDTV Wonder PCI tuner card. I get
it to accept the digital channels, but it does not read in nor ask about the
analog channels that come through the cable from Verison's CAT5 cable. Is
that normal? Without Media Center it did both digital and analog.
Thanks.

Only one Tuner works!
I'm setting up my new HP Pavilion Ultimate D4999TPC. This is my second,
since the first one I had to return b/c it had all kinds of problems (such as
no internet access). It's equipped with dual ATSC-NTSC TV tuner, PVR, FM
tuner, REM. One card is Hauppague WinTV HVR-1600 (NTSC/ATSC combo) and the
other card is ViXS PureTV-U 48BO (NTSC/ATSC combo). Total of 4 tuners.
I have analog cable (coming out of the wall and I use a splitter to connect
to the tv tuners).
1st problem:
When I do auto config, it either comes back with no tuners found or only one
tuner found but detects my analog cable as antenna.
2nd problem:
When I do manual config, only the NTSC connector would work on the Hauppauge
card and I get nothing on the ViXS card. With the previously returned unit,
I was able to get both tuners to work on the Hauppage card, although,
sometimes the ATSC tuner would quit and I would have to restart the computer
(sometimes 2 or 3 times) and then it would work again.
Another issue I have with this new system while the previous system did not
have this issue, is when it's recording something, I cannot go to "live tv"
even though it's the same channel that it's recording.
Conclusion:
I'm stuck with only one usable tuner out or 4!
The useless tech support tells me I cannot use both tuners on the same card.
They say it's impossible, even though that's exactly what I did with the
previous system. They want to send me another Hauppauge card to replace the
ViXS card (which also has the FM tuner so then I would not have an FM tuner).
He said with two seperate Hauppage cards, I would then be able to use 2
tuners. This does not make sense to me. I should be able to usee both
tuners on the Hauppauge card as I did before.
Oh, one more thing with this system (and not with the previous system),
When downloading the Guide, I would keep getting "download
incomplete--Code:13" And then eventually, after a bunch of tries, it would
finally complete. My wireless status is "excellent."
Please help!! Thank you!!!! Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180548
Replacing poor MCE tv signal with external STB signal/feed
The Windows Media Center PC that i have obviously has an internal tv card
built in. Quite a few people have said it is not reknowned for it's quality.
I have a couple of digital tv set top boxes that provide superb quality
pictures and sound. In detrimental contrast to that, the digital tv receiver
in the Media Center, or pc?, i'm not sure which it's a part of, suffers from
interference and picture break up, as well as failing to find channels. It
often states that a channel can't be found because the signal is weak.
However, i can assure you that the signal at the end of the coax cable going
into the pc is not weak and i have tested it the cheapets set top box i could
find. The cheapo stb found and displayed every single channel perfectly.
In view of the above, i was wondering if i can get the media center to use
the 'out' signal on the STB in preference to it's internal tuner card. The
connection is via the coax input socket on the back of the pc.
I'm confused as to whether, when one connects and sets up the MCE to work
with a STB, it uses it's own tv card signal or the STB's signal. If it is the
latter then that is perfect as i can just reset the MCE to use the superior
STB feed.
Therefore, my question is: in such a set up which signal is being used?.
Many, many thanks in advance for anyone who knows the answer to this
question for sure, and also shares it here of course.

Recording when hooked up to Dish network
I have only had my media center for about 2 weeks. I think I have all the
right things hooked up. I went through the wizard and have all the stuff
hooked up. I watch live tv just fine.
The problem I am having is with the recording. I can set it up to record
two programs. But when the program comes up to record, it only records what I
am watching on my regular tv. I have gone through the changing channels and
it does that correctly. It wont record only what is on my regular tv. If my
dish box is turned off, it will only record the away message that dish
network has on. I have read everything and search all over trying to find an
answer for this and I cant, so I thought I would throw it at you and see if
you can help me with this.
I must say, I do have the dish network box with the DVR in it, will this
prohibit me from recording on my media center?
All I have been able to do is record directly what I am watching, nothing
that I have scheduled that would have to be on a different channel.

Channels Missing (Low Signal in MCE) -- But Work with WinTV app
I am missing about half broadcast digital channels that are available to me

How can I force MCE to allow me to tune these channels? It seems to me that

Cable TV signal setup problems
Hello,
When I try to watch live TV using Media Center the picture is horrible. It
is hard to make out what is going on and the picture flips across the screen.
It looks almost as if something is set to the wrong channel. The audio is
fine.
I have gone through the setup numerous times. My cable tv is directly
connected to the tuner card in my Dell XPS 410.
I tried going through the setup and telling it I had a satellite or set-top
tuner. Through these options it let me try 3 different channels for signal.
Channel 2 looked like what I see, channel 3 looked much better but a bit
fuzzy, channel 4 had no signal. Unfortunately, though, as this is not the
correct setup for my direct cable connection I have to abort because it keeps
telling me IR hardware not dtected.
This used to work fine. Somewhere along the line the picture went and I just
figured maybe something was wrong with the cable itself. It is definitely not
the cable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180476
Pie in the sky!
I may be behind the curve on this but...
How about developing an open standard for controlling STBs via RS232, or IP?
A standard that will allow MCE to truely talk to STBs and other media
devices, sending direct commands and determining STB status, using something
like streamed XML? This wouldn't just help MCE, but the Audio/Video industry
as well. Then you can get around all this IR/UHF/STB frustration.
MCEs only truly usefull if it can be configured so everyone in the house can
use it, and they aren't all techs.

Function Keys on Remote
Different STBs require different methods of interaction depending on their
state, and MCE has no way of knowing the state of the STB. For example, my
dish network STB resets every night, so I have to hit OK to turn it on.
There is no way to do this via MCE, so somedays MCE just records a screen
saver from the STB.
Solutions1: Allow automation IR scripts to be run before a recording event.
A script can consist of recorded IR sequences that are played back to the
STB before a recording takes place.
Solutions2: Add function buttons (eg F1,F2,F3) to the remote, and have the
ability to have the function modes mapped to different IR commands.
Therefore I could config F1 to map keys to IR commands specifically for the
STB. Then if my STB gets out of Sync I can put MCE into F1 mode by hitting
the key, and use my remote just like the STB remote to synch up the STB.
This also opens the possibilty for mapping to other devices like SoundSystems.
Solutions3: Just for the sake of throwing something else out there, how
about an IR blaster that truely Blasts! All I can find are mini blasters
that require a Bug to be taped over the STB eye. Kind of tacky to say the
least. If I can control my TV from acrss the room, I should be able to have
an IR blaster that can work from across the room. This would also help open
up possibilities mentioned above.

Frustration with STB / IR and MCE in general
Problem: Can't block channels. Even if I hide a channel in the guide, I can
still access it directly using the remote. This means if I fat-finger the
channel I can end up on one not supported by my STB subscription, therefore
ending up on a menu that I can't get out of becuase.... MCE won't transmit my
already mapped "OK" signal to the STB. Solution: Add the ability to truely
block a channel, so it donesn't appear in the guide and can't be accessed
directly from the remote.

Colour ajustment
I view XP Media Centre 2005 through a standard CRT PAL TV or a 720P

Up until I got the HTPC I watched the TV with a digital tuner signal (UK

When using the HTPC with Media centre it goes through S Video to the TV or

The picture looks fine on both from the digital receiver but is far too
intensely coloured from the PC but I can't find any way of adjusting the
intensity of the colour from within Media centre.
I have tried a couple of the different "Color Profiles" available on the PC
but they don't seem to make enough of a difference.
It is more than somewhat annoying to look at this very unrealistic picture.
Is there anyway to adjust the colour to be more realistic within Media

Upgrade from 2004 to 2005
I would very much like to be able to install Windows Media Player 11 on my PC
(so I can watch streaming movies from Netflix on the new monitor I just
bought). Unfortunately WMP 11 does not work on WinXP MCE 2004. The
manufacturer of my PC tells me there is nothing they can do to upgrade my
system to MCE 2005 (and that I should just buy a new PC). However, I have
seen references on this site to upgrading from MCE 2004 to MCE 2005. Can
anyone shed some light on this apparent contradiction? And if one can
upgrade from 2004 to 2005, how is that done? Would a product recovery disc
do it (meaning, could I use a recover disc for WinXP MCE 2005 to convert my
operating system from 2004 to 2005)?

Editing recorded TV?
I am using Windows Media Center with Vista Home Premium and a Hauppauge TV
card.
The recorded TV is saved with file format [name.dvr-ms]. Is there any way
that I can edit this recorded TV with Pinnacle Studio v11?
If not what are the options for editing recorded TV? Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180424
How do we stop the echo in WLM 8.5 when teleconferencing?
Ever since Messenger was upgraded many of us have experienced a nasty echo
that makes using the conferencing feature impossible.
This did not used to be, and simply using headphones is not the answer, so
please don't even suggest it.
This has to be a bug in Windows Live Messenger 8.5, and possibly 8.1.
I did not experience this echo in previous versions, so I'm pretty sure it
is not a hardware issue.
What needs to be fixed?
We have tried all settings and nothing stops it. Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180420
ownership issue
Please help! I had my computer in safe mode and was logged in as
administrator. I was having trouble accessing the history folder in local
settings so i took ownership of the folder, now i can access it but now my
computer isnt recording the history. there is nothing in the folder and when
i view it with the internet up there is nothing there not even icons for the
date. normally i would just use system restore but for some reason it was
turned off. Is there a way to reverse what i did so it will start recording
the history again?

Suddendly issue with Program Guide Update..
Hi,
suddendly I cannot longer update the Program Guide, as I could since the
install of Vista.
I have tried everything, my ADSL is fine, but I got an error code 4 "could
not establish a connection"
I can see all TV program and all Media Center works fine, except updating
the Grogran Guide.
Even when I try to reconfigure the internet connection in MC Vista Ultimate,
it still says that the connection does not work.
My firewall is off and nothing should prevent this feature to work like it
always did.
Can you help me please.
I have cable TV with a Pinnacle Vista card which works perfectly.
Thanks in advance

XP Media Center 2005 Away Mode
Ok, so I may be posting in the wrong forum, but I could not find a Media
Center specific group. I am running XP Media Center 2005 w/ all windows and
driver updates, on a Dell Dimension
E520, 2.66 GHZ Dual-core Pentium D, 1 GB RAM 2 internal SATA 250 GB/300 GB
hard drives. GeForce 7300 LE 256 MB vid card (which is strangely shown
pretty much everywhere in the system as having 512 MB though??) Anyhow, I
reinstalled Windows some time ago with the CD instead of the factory image
restore from the hidden partition. No problems, everything installed,
working properly, and showing properly (except the vid card's memory) Quite
a few months later bought the 300 GB drive to install, and after
installation I noticed an unknown device in device manager. The hard drive
is installed and working properly at this point, after some testing etc. the
unknown device is definitely NOT the hard drive. I checked the properties of
the unknown device checked out and searched the hardware strings on the
details tab, and have come up with it's the Media Center Away Mode driver.
From what I can tell searching, I can literally find nothing fruitful about
how to fix this problem with the away mode driver. There is no away mode tab
in Power Options either. I don't necessarily need the functionality of away
mode, but I would like to get rid of this annoying entry in my device
manager without uninstalling or disabling it. Anyone have any ideas or
suggestions that don't consist of disabling/uninstalling? Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180404
Why is Media Ctr remote full screen?
Recently purchased HP Media Ctr (MC) PC with Vista Home Premium on it with a
TV Tuner/FM Radio card. It also came with a Media Ctr Remote. The sticker
on inside of remote's battery door says Model TSGH-IR01 SW rev.A
How do I get the remote to open or leave the MC window in a small window in
lower right corner of screen, which is where I have it set to open when I
open/operate MC commands with the mouse? If I open the MC with the remote
(say the Radio) it always opens full screen! Even if I open the MC in TV
mode by mouse but then want to change to Radio mode using remote the MC goes
to full screen.
Is there a way to "shrink" the full screen to the my normal small window
using some remote button?
Is there some type of operational manual for this remote? There is nothing
in the MC's on screen Help about the remote.
Thanks for any help/guidance ...... Rick Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180402

Computer Rebooting Automatically
Hello,
My computer has started rebooting itself over the last month, and it's been
getting more frequent. It seems to happen when a decent load is applied. I
thought it may have been a heat issue, but I got it to restart even when a
fan was blowing into the tower. I have updated the drivers that I could,
voltages seem to be fine, and have recently formatted and reinstalled Windows.
Another forum has recommended running memtest86, which I will do as soon as
I can, but I have swapped 3 different memory sticks, and it happens with
each. Here is the error code for the most recent event: Error code 1000008e,
parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 b7377870, parameter4
00000000. I'm having difficulty finding the definition for this, so could
someone help with that as well?
Thanks! Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180389
Medion Laptop and watching TV
Hi,
As a real newbie to Vista, I have just bought a Medion Laptop with a DVB-T
Tuner Express Card54, and Digital Aerial. I have tried many times to set up
the tuner to watch TV but don't seem to get anywhere. I am not an
experienced computer whizz, but neither am I a complete novice.
I live in the mountains of Sth West Wales, UK, and we don't get digital TV
as we can't get a good Ch 5 signal and we get really bad recetion on
Analogue reception (we have to pay for Sky to even get a
decent picture).
So I assume that is why I can't get Digital on the Laptop?
I am wondering if I should be able to get Analogue TV using this TV Card? I
have tried to connect my Analogue roof aerial to the laptop, but still no
TV.
I have tried to get Digital TV at my mother-in-laws house but still no joy
(she is in an area that can get digital).
I can understand that I may not be able to get digital here where I live,
but can't understand why I can't get anything in an are where I know that
you can get it.
I suppose I just want to know really if the TV Card is working as it is a
new laptop, but don't know what else to do.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Regards,
Dalavon. Tag: Media player not working Tag: 180388
