Newbie Question ???
Hi guys been reading for a while and you guys are very knowledgeable
and helpful. Here is my question ....
Is there a way in Vista MCE to change the naming convention in the
recorded TV folder??? For example the way it names a file now is...
Doctor Who_SCIFI_30_05_2008
Is it possible to have VIsta MCE change teh naming convention so that
I can either switch that around a bit or change it completely to
whatever I want like...

Watching recorded TV on another PC
I have 2 machines both the same, running Vista and I use them both as DVR's.
If I go into 'Settings' I can add other locations that the system will search
for recorded TV , how do I tell it to search for files on the other maxhine?
I have tried mapping drives but the machine seems only to want to find files
if they are local.

How do I use an AV Receiver with the Windows Media Center?
G'day,
I get my TV signal via an AV Receiver.
I have this plugged into my PC's tuner card using the AV Receiver's
RCA plugs (yellow, red, white).
What options in the Windows Media Center do I use to get the TV
working?
If I choose Cable or Satellite, then I can see the picture in the
small setup box but the setup fails as it says I need to connect the
IR. There is no where to connect the IR to the AV Receiver.
Does anyone know what needs to be done to get this working?
(I'd also like to be able to connect my Camcorder using the RCA plugs
method as well)
Thanks in advance.

I know I can use the command line to force an application to install to a
drive letter other than C:. I have forgotten how, and where I read it. I have
a number of applications I'd like to relocate to drive D:, where those
applications did not provide a choice, or a custom install option. How do I
do it?

Panasonic DVR connection to Media Center
Hello,
I have built a Vista media Center and I am using an HD Home Run as my OTA
tuner. I have a large amount of video recorded on a Panasonic DVR and I would
like to gain access to this through the Media center. I think the way to do
it is with an analog tuner but wanted to check with some more experienced
guys for a possibly better solution.

XMRadio in Vista Media Center....does not play
I am really at my wit's end with this. I have Vista Ultimate and a Linksys
DMA2200. I am unable to play the XMRadio link within Media Center. It loads
properly but there is no activation of the Media Player toolbar at the
botton. I have a second computer at work running the same setup and it works
fine. I used to be able to have XM palying but I needed to reformat the HD
and reinstall everything. Now I have reinstalled everything three times and
there is no solution available. I have contacted Dell, Microsoft, XMRadio,
and Linksys. It is like the keystone cops with fingers pointing all
directions. There needs to be some type of control installed within Media
Center and is not. The XMRadio link works great in Internet Explorer and
also on the sidebar within a gadget.
Does anybody have any thoughts on how to install the XMPlayer properly
within Media Center?
Thank you.

Will not let me delete a select few videos that I've downloaded!
Hi, There are seven files that I've downloaded (videos) that will not play,
so I want to delete them. When I right click on these specific files, delete
is not in the list of options as it always is. So I highlight the file and go
to file>delete just to get an ERROR message stating, "The following files
could not be deleted. They may be in use by another application or are
currently being downloaded to" Though I know for certain that the files are
neither in use nor being downloaded! Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated as it's driving me nuts! Thanks. Tag: Media Center in Vista wouldn't show photo's. Tag: 183957
How do I ????
1- Stop watching a folder and remove it from my Video Library?
The Problem IS: I have added several network folders to my Video Library
collection in Vista MCE (Home Premium), and when these network resources are
NOT available, It takes VMCE an extreamly longtime to access the video
library collection. I have already STOPPED watching these network folders
and they no longer show as being watched, but the folders still appear in the
Library collection, when those network resources ARE available. And when
they are NOT available it just slows the process down of openning the library.
2- How do I remove folders from my Video Library Collection? without
deleting them from my system...
I have several folders that are NOT even being watched (they never were
being watched)... For example: C:\my TV Shows\CSI, where the watched folder
IS "CSI" and the shared resource IS "my TV Shows"... The extra folder that
shows up IS "C:\" which contains only program video demos used for the
programs on my computer.
3- How do I keep the "window" sizing? I open a window (any window) and
resize it to my liking, but Vista doesn't remember the sizing change next
time I open this window. It will always be at the original default size
(small)... How can I force it to remember the sizing change? In Win XP it was
simple just hold the <shift> key when closing the window and the new size was
remembered until changed next...
4- How do I Force recorded TV shows to be saved with filenames such as
"series Name, Episode Name, ch #, network name, etc... Under WinXP MCE I
could use a program called "MCE 2005 Customizer" to do this, but it doesn't
work under Vista and the program writer is nlonger supportting it... Once it
is set, I don't need to change it... So, if there's a registry setting that
could be changed to cause this, I will try it... It seems like all the info
is there in the Mega Tag of the TV show because it shows the Series Name and
Episode Name in the Vidoe clip thumbnail itself, but not as the filename....

Still no thumbnails in recordedTV
I have a new install (recent rebuild) of Vista x64 Ultimate and do not get
thumbnails for recorded TV.
I have tried all the suggestions in the other threads and more.
Since the rebuild all the previously recorded and new TV does not show
thumbanils in Media centre UI.
I do not, and have never had Nero 7 installed.
I have tried all the registry fixes suggested here and on the wider internet.
I've tried the REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL and agree with user Barb Bowman, that
Windows reports the specified module cannot be found (just for kicks I tabbed
through the entire system32 folder at the promt and it didn't auto suggest
SHMEDIA.DLL.) Also a system wide search for this file returns nothing.
The thumbnails appear in Explorer and WMP fine
What on earth is happening, I'm pretty good with Windows normally (I had to
crack open bcdedit last week) but this has me stumped!

Xbox Not Connected in Media Center Extender
I've had my xbox 360 linked to my computer for a while now and it's worked
fine. I turned on media center through my 360 one day and it froze at the
loading screen. I checked my media center extender settings on my computer
and it says my xbox is not connected. Can't seem to figure out why. Is there
another post someone can refer me to or help me troubleshoot what is keeping
my xbox from connecting to my computer?
I've Uninstalled MC extender along with .net framework 1.1 etc. Reinstalled,
still can't connect to my xbox even when setting up a new connection.
Extender is not blocked by my firewall and the proper ports have been opened.
Just ran into this similar problem when I installed XP SP3 and had to
manually intall a missing hotfix that was keeping media center extender from
being installed and working properly. It was working fine then this happened.
I've let media center sit at the loading screen on my xbox for about 15 min,
still no luck. Not sure what to do... Tag: Media Center in Vista wouldn't show photo's. Tag: 183943

Applications running on XP with SP3
Several applications including all of the Office 2003 suite do not leave
memory when shutdown. Some applications will not restart until they are
killed in the task manager.
Firefox used to do it, but the latest version has stopped the problem.
However Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 does, as does Word, Excel, Outlook, and
PowerPoint. IE has never done this in any of its iterations.
This also happened in XP SP2 so upgrading to SP3 did not help.
If I start and shutdown one of the offending apps a number of times all of
the copies remain in memory and really slow things down.
This happened after a series of upgrades were carried out automatically, but
i cannot determine which sequence of upgrades started the problem.
Help I am going nuts trying to find this problem, it is not just to fix it

Installed XP SP3, update wants MCE updates from 2006 Installed?

Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB913800)
Last Published 4/25/2006 7.7 MB
Update Rollup for Windows XP Media Center 2005 (KB914548)
Last Published 4/25/2006 3.4 MB
These updates don't show in add/remove programs, so I may not have installed
them previously. Can they be installed after SP3 or do I have to uninstall

Windows will not shutdown/restart
I tried to post this on Mon, Jun 16, but haven't seen it listed. My
apoligies if this does become double posted.
I need help and I havenâ??t been able to find my problem discussed in
Microsoftâ??s knowledge base or this forum. I cannot get my computer to reboot
(restart) or shutdown without using the power button.
Particulars of my computer are as follows: Dell Dimension XPS600, 3GHz CPU,
2GB RAM, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002, SP3. SP3 was installed on May
15, 2008. No other new software or drivers have knowingly been installed
since installing SP3. Seven automatic updates (4 security updates for XP, 2
Malicious SW removal tool, and 1 security update for IE7) have been installed
since SP3 installation. I donâ??t know when I started having this problem, but
Iâ??ve been struggling with it for at least 3 weeks. We have had some power
outages over the last few weeks and my UPS battery wouldnâ??t keep a charge
(since been replaced), so the computer did have some hard power crashes.
Anyway, when I try to restart/shutdown, the â??Shut Down Windowsâ?? window comes
up, asking to restart, shutdown, etc. The previously active window also
â??grays out.â?? After selecting restart or shutdown, the previously active
window becomes active again and NO action is taken on my shutdown request.
The same response happens whether I initiate the restart/shutdown using the
Start Menu or using the Ctl-Alt-Del and requesting shutdown from the Windows
Security window. I have now also confirmed that I cannot Logoff either â??
previously active window becomes active again and NO further action is taken
on my shutdown request. The computer will, however, go into standby and
hibernate.
I noticed on this forum that someone had referenced a â??Windows XP Shutdown
and Restart Troubleshootingâ?? guide (James Eshelmanâ??s web site). From that, I
didnâ??t find anything that applied to my situation. However, I did try the
restart/shutdown shortcuts within a CMD window that were recommended; same
non-response as through the Shut Down Window.
I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling SP3, or remaining on SP2. I
have 3 other computers in the house; all Dell machines and on XP Pro (SP3).
My XPS, however, is the only machine running Media Center Edition. I am not
having this problem on any other machine, nor did I have the problem prior to
SP3. I have also not contacted Dell as of yet. Can anyone help me with this
problem? Tag: Media Center in Vista wouldn't show photo's. Tag: 183890

Cannot Select Analog tuner
I have a brand new HP pavilllion with Windows Vista Home premium.
I added a "ATSC NTSC Hybrid HDTV PCI TV Tuner /Digital Video Recorder" card,
the manufacturer is Geniatech and the model is X8000A.
The Card has a digital tuner and an Analog tuner, the digital signal from my
cable company looks to be very weak.
When I try to configure the TV tuner in Windows Media center the only option
I am getting is the Digital tuner, even when I tell Media Center that I am
going to configure it manually.
(I don't use the digital tuner because after a scan it finds some chanels
but the signal is too weak and no image is displayed)
The card comes with other software and I can configure it to use the Analg
tuner, but I rather use Windows Media Center to record and watch TV.
Is there any way to make Windows Media allow me the select Analog TV tuner?

Stack based buffer; Physical Memory Dump; Blue Screen of Death Hel
Hi
A few days ago, I accidentally downloaded a dodgy Active X off a website. It
downloaded tons of spyware, malware - the usual tricks. I used my Spybot S&D
to get rid of what I thought was all of the spyware.
Afterwards, I used Adaware (by Lavasoft) to remove anything else, but
halfway through, I got this blue screen of death:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.
A driver has overrun a stack-based buffer. This overrun could potentially

If this is the first time you've seen this error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then
select Safe Mode.

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance.
I'm not sure if the Technical information is correct, but I know its similar
- I'l update as soon as it next happens.
Anyway, I tried deleting all of the Active X's that I had downloaded, but I
still got this problem. And I tried Spybot / AdAware in Safe MOde to give the
same outcome.
And, in frustration, I tried a System Restore, but I still get the blue
screen of death, so it never actually finishes.
I'm completely baffled now, so please, any kind of assistance would be
appreciated.
Im not very good with any technical computing either, so please can you give
me any details in easy to folllow instructions.

Problem with watched folders
I have several watched folders on a Windows Vista Premium system and recently
the Media Center Video Library no longer is showing any files. I have made no
changes to the system (other than I noticed a recent Windows update took
place).
I can exit Windows Media Center and open all the video files via Windows
Media Player, so they are all available and accessible from Windows.
All other files, watched music and photos are working fine from Media
Center, it is just the Video Library that is not showing any files.
All the media (music, photos, video) are on a Windows Home Server. As
mentioned, all the media files can be viewed from Windows, and all media but
the videos show up in Media Center. This was working, and I was able to view
video files from the Video Library in Vista Media Center.
I have removed and re-added the "Videos" folder on WHS to the Media Center
Library watched folder list, but the video files just won't show up in Media
Center.

Media Center Extender Crashes on Xbox 360
So basically I am having problems using my xbox 360 as a media extender. I
installed the software on the PC, set it up, and entered the 8 digit code.
However, when the Xbox is is "contacting" mode, it all of a sudden jsut
freezes up. Won't continue contacting, just stops and crashes and I have to
reset the xbox. My current configuration is the Xbox and MCE computer are
both on a SWITCH (not a ROUTER) so there is no port configuration on that
end. Now I had the same set up over a month ago and it was working jsut fine.
But then I had to send in my Xbox for repairs and when I got it back I had to
re configure everything. However, I was having mad problems with the software
after I installed SP3. Tried fixing it, but said screw it and reformatted and
reinstalled the OS. Since then I have been getting the same issue. Always
crashes with contacting the Media Center computer. I have all the updates to
MCE (sans SP3). I installed the Media Extender software just like last time.
I have Firewall turned off on teh computer and no virus protection. Is there
some otehr setting I am forgetting? I have media sharing set up in Win Media
Player 11 and if I don't use extender and use the dashboard instead to see
all my music files, they appear just fine, but I want to use the Extender.
That's half the reason I got this thing anyway. So wrapping up, has anyone
had this issue before? Is there a setting I am forgetting to set which is
causing the Xbox to crash? Any help on this would be incredibly appreciated,

Quality of Video Card
I don't know if anyone one this list has the answer for this, but is the
video processing for extenders done at the extender level or the computer
level? The reason I'm asking is that if it's totally done at the extender
level, then it doesn't matter what level of video card you have in your
computer if you only use extenders to watch media center.

Another QAM question! MS seems to say it is supported.
I see that Microsoft is saying that it supports QAM on Vista Media Center.

Is it true? I am trying to bring up my HVR-1600 in my Vista Ultimate.
I would appreciate if Microsoft can clarify it.

Recording FM in Vista Home Premium
Hello,
Iâ??d like to record FM, it seems odd that MC buffers FM but doesnâ??t offer a
way to record FM in the latest edition. Any suggestions for third party
tools to do that? Tag: Media Center in Vista wouldn't show photo's. Tag: 183825
Sound Issues
I am a new user to the Windows Media product. I purchased a new HP
multimedia machine and hooked everything up, but I have 2 sound related
issues...
The first is that when I am just watching a channel, any channel, the sound
is about 2 seconds quicker then the video. The second is that when I record
a show, I get no sound. I'm not sure why this would work this way?
Any Ideas? Tag: Media Center in Vista wouldn't show photo's. Tag: 183818
File recording is too large for the recordable disc.
I'm using Vista and when I want to make a copy of the TV program I recorded,
I get a meassage stating the disc is too small or the file is larger than the
disc I want to put it on. The recording is about 14 gigs and the DVD
recordable disc (DVD+RW) is about 4.7 gigs capable. Is it possible to get the
recorder to copy this single 14 gig TV program onto multiple 4 gig recordable
DVD+RW discs, in sequence?
Sort of like when using back-up and the file or program you are backing-up
is larger than one disc. Windows lets you know when it's time to insert
another disc.
Can this feature be added when copying a TV program to a DVD disc?
thank you,

Unable to start Windows Media Centre Options
Hi,
I am running Window Vista Home Premium SP1 and have been unable to
start WMC using the remote control, shortcuts or by running the
ehshell.exe both normally and as administrator.
When I try to start WMC using any of the above it looks like the
programme trys to start (blue circle appears for a few seconds) then
nothing happens.
Every few days after restarting the PC an icon appears on the system
tray informing me that WMC is downloading guide information from the
net for the TV channel listing. When I right click on the icon and
select open WMC I get the following error message: -
"Unable to start Windows Media Centre"
I have tried setting up a new shortcut, uninstalled and reinstalled
SP1 and have installed the latest driver for my video card NVIDIA
GeForce 7650 GS driver 7.15.11.7490 and have still been unable to
resolve the problem.
I have searched the net and Microsoft support and have been unable to
find a solution so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Wireless connection - 2 questions
Hi There
I am using Windows XP - Server Pack 3 and installed a new wireless router
and found that I have two issues I would like some help with:
1.
I can connect to the router, however the link says "validating identity". I
can view the internet and send/receive emails etc. however, this notification
keeps popping up. Is this something to be concerned about and how can I fix
it?
2.
When I connect a different laptop, this laptop cannot connect to the
wireless printer that is on the network. I have read through instructions
etc. but cannot find how to change it. Any ideas?
Many thanks
