Hey gang,

I have been getting messages, even without Media Center open, that the "
Windows Media Update has stopped working ". When I choose to check online
for a solution, I do not get any feedback.

So I thought I would open Media Center, to see if I could see something
there in the options that might clue me in. After opening Media Center and
starting to navigate through it, it closes immediately, due to a problem. It
does this as soon as I start clicking on things within Media Center, just
won't stay open.

I tried a google search, and about all I saw on repairing Media Center, was
running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt. I tried this, and it
ran and did not find any damaged files.

Any ideas, on what I might could do to repair this? I really don't use Media
Center, but it is annoying me more than anything, that it does not work, at
this point.

Thanks for any feedback here,

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947464

Most of what it says follows... (You might want to do the WORKAROUND section
since you say you don't use Media Center)

CAUSE
This problem occurs if the Windows Media Center update process
(Mcupdate.exe) cannot access the Windows Media Center data store. You may
experience this problem if the data store is damaged. The Mcupdate.exe
process is a scheduled task that runs two times every day. If this scheduled
task cannot access the data store, the Mcupdate.exe process crashes.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, try to rebuild the Media Center data store. To do
this, follow these steps:1. Exit any running instance of Windows Media
Center.
2. Delete the following file:
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\mediaCenterDataStore.db
To do this, follow these steps:a. Click Start, type run in the Start Search
box, and then click Run in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type
the password, or click Continue.
b. In the Open box, type %systemdrive%\programdata\microsoft\ehome, and
then click OK.
c. In the details pane, right-click mediacenterdatastore.db, and then click
Delete.
d. Click Yes to confirm that you want to move the Mediacenterdatastore.db
file to the Recycle Bin.

3. Start Windows Media Center.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem if you do not use Windows Media Center, cancel
the Mcupdate.exe scheduled task. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click
Start, type task scheduler in the Start Search box, and then click Task
Scheduler in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type
the password, or click Continue.
2. In the navigation pane, expand Task Scheduler Library, expand Microsoft,
expand Windows, and then click Media Center.
3. In the details pane, right-click mcupdate, and then click Disable.

Sweet, that appears to have worked!

While I don't use Media Center, thought I would try the fix first, by
deleting the mediacenterdatastore. The file showed, it had been modified on
4/11, although I don't know how as I do not really use Media Center.
I can now open, and navigate around in Media Center, without it closing
immediately.

I suspect I will no longer get those annoying " windows media update manager
has stopped working" messages now too, although time will tell.

Many thanks for the help!
