    - Remove Media Center Hi, I was told in a different group I could not use a MCE product key to activate a system installed from a Home edition DVD, so now I'm going for installing my OEM MCE and remove the media functions afterwards. Does anybody know if I can shut down the MC services and uninstall the components, or simply remove MC files, folders and registry entries without jeopardizing the stability of the OS?     - Will shutting down PC during Disk Check corrupt data? Hi, I started running the Windows XP Disk Check utility on my hard drive. During the disk check , I shutdown Windows (Start -> Shutdown). Will I have any disk errors as a result of shutting down Windows during the disk check? Note that I shutdown Windows from the Start menu, not a hard power-off.     - 2 Audio Streams on AVI File Playing at the same time in WMC Hello Gurus! I have a problem playing particular avi files that have 2 audio streams. Windows media player plays both at the same time and this results in two different voice overs at the same time english/mandarine! I can play the avi in VLC media player without the conflict. There must be a way of disabling the second audio stream in wmp....? I cannot use other media players because it is vista windows media center which doesn't seem to let anything else be the default video player (i could be wrong about that though).     - Installing Media Center on Windows 2008 Hello, Just about everything MS doesn't enable in 2008 such as sidebar, dreamscene, live mail etc all work on Windows 2008 - but without the slow performance of Vista. I have the install disc for Vista and a valid license. If anyone figures a way to get media center working on this great OS please let me know. A lot of people who have tried out Win2k8 as a desktop seem very happy and even though I really really really didn't like Vista because of the slow performance, I have to admit 2008 seems to do everything Vista SP1 does but at the speed of XP.     - Microsoft C++ - Runtime Library I Was transferring digital jpg files to external hard drive and also was trying to download RAW files off of card from card reader into Canon Zoom Browser. When i hit download the error screen in subject box showed up, with this additional information. RUNTIME ERROR! PROGRAM... CANON/CAMERA WINDOW/CAMERA WINDOW COMP.     - lost outlook contacts after deleting user account I deleted a user account in an effort to consolidate 2 users into one account. I backup up system prior to this and saved all files in the deleted account. Now I cannot find contacts for the Outlook that was in the deleted user account since doing this.     - Unable to allocate from system paged pool... Recently I started getting this message "Unable to allocation from system paged pool because the pool was empty" I found a reference to this message on another forum and it gave the following solution. Problem is, that solution was for Server/2003 and I am running XP. Also, I have a pagefile size in my registry (Pagingfiles ... 758 1536) and don't know whether adding the PagedPoolSize referred to below will conflict with Pagingfiles.     - Guide download Hiya, I've got Vista Home Premium running SP1 and it comes with Media Center (MC) bundled in. At first it would download the TV guide updates without a problem...but now it won't download them at all. I've googled all over trying to find a cure and everywhere goes on about deleting the EPG directory and machine keys...but I don't appear to have them on my PC, or if they are I can't find them. I was going to uninstall and re-install MC, in the hope that this sorts out the directories I need, but I don't appear to be able to do that either. Also I've been wondering do I need to open any ports on my router to allow the guide download? If so which ones? Any help would be great, because this is driving me mad!     - Windows Media Player 11 will not work I purchased new computer with vista and windows media player 11. It worked fine until I received notice of update which I installed. now wmp 11 does not work. I downloaded wmp 11 from microsoft website but when I try to install I get message that a newer version is already on my computer and I cannot install or repair older version.     - Repair XP Pro Hello there I recently wanted to do a back-up and, when asked whether I wanted to compress the harddisc (can't even remember how I got there), clicked YES. That was when the problems started. All of a sudden I got a message that files were being replaced with non-original ones and that I shoudl insert the programme disc. But my laptop came with XP installed. Is there any way that I can repair the OS? I can still use the laptop for most things but some programmes won't work properly and it is generally a nuisance.     - My upgrade suggestion for Vista Media Center I do think Vista Media Center is a great improvement over MCE 2005, but it does need to realize the modern reality that people now have large digital libraries of video, music, and pictures. Apple TV has a good way to purchase new media, as well as integration with podcasting and the iTunes store. Looking at the default options in VMC, I would upgrade it to have the following: Main Menu: Pictures + Videos - stuff I took with my camera *More Pictures - browse shared images on the network if you have a home network *Picture Library - browse your image library *Video Library - browse your home videos *Search - find an image based on tags or on date taken Games - mini-games for use within Media Center, kind of like Mario Party-style or iPod game style games *More Games - buy or download for free new games from the game market *Game Library - pick a game from the ones you now own. *Play random - picks a game at random Now Playing + Playlists *Playlists - tv, movie, and music playlists here, sortable by type (tv/movie/music) *Now Playing - currently playing media and what's in queue *Create Playlist - create a playlist of media, tv, music, movies, or all mixed TV - watch, record, playback, purchase *Explore - free TV shows from content providers with advertisements. So if NBC allows you to watch a show online, you can click 'NBC', then the show name, and go watch it, streaming. *More TV - similar to iTunes, but allows you to browse through available shows, purchase them, see clips, etc. within VMC. You can subscribe to a show (purchase a season pass), and as new episodes come out, they download for you and show up as 'new' in your TV library *TV Library - just like music library, organized by show, season, then episode. When viewing a series, you can 'play all' to play the whole series from start to finish (no interruption to 'delete'). When viewing a season, you can 'play season' to play the whole season immediately. Underneath this 'play all/season' you would see 'add to queue' to put the series/season/episode into the now playing playlist. This is viewed as banners, thumbnails, or DVD covers. *Internet TV - see the channels you subscribed to online, like RTL or Japan TV, and get new channels here too. *Search - search for a show based on actor, director, writer, keyword from the description, year, etc. in your library. If the library sees episodes missing, they will appear in the library grayed out, but over the thumbnail, you see 'purchase this episode' or 'complete this season of x-show.' Movies - watch, rip, purchase movies *More Movies - find and purchase movies online through the Zune Marketplace, integrated as a Media Center experience. Search by actor, year, title, keyword, genre, director, series, etc. *Movie Library - browse your movie collection purchased/saved to your hard drive as DVD covers, view information, and 'add to queue' to play a series of movies back-to-back. *Search - find a movie based on rating, length, actor, director, series, year, genre, etc. Music - play albums, artists, years, etc. like in media player *Settings - here you can check your albums to make sure the album art is correct, etc. *More Music - music store to purchase music, with recommendations based on your current library. *Music Video Library - view/sort music videos by title/artist/genre, etc. In the details view, you can see either 'purchase album' or 'play album' if you own the album that video comes from. Otherwise, you can 'add to queue' to add to the now playing list. *Music Library - sort by album, artist, etc. *Play All - plays all music *Radio - if you have a radio tuner on the PC, you can hear those station here. *Internet Radio - if a station streams online, it will show here *Search - find music in your library. After searching, if there is a new album by, say, the Cardigans, a link under the library will show "Buy the new Cardigans album 'Erase and Rewind'" which takes you to the music store to try it out and purchase it. Podcasts - get your podcasts organized here *Settings - change when to delete podcasts, when to download, etc. *More Podcasts - get more podcasts from the online directory of *Podcast Library - view downloaded podcasts by name (thumbnail view) *Download Status - see what is downloading and what's in queue to download *Search - find a podcast Sports - same as now. I don't really use it much. Online Media - find new plug-ins and mini-games, etc. Kind of like games for iPod, since a Media Center is supposed to be a social computer. *More Programs - search online database for new miniprograms for VMC. Most are free, 50 cents, or 99 cents *Program Library - mini-programs you downloaded *Explore - internet based content based on your preferences (tv, movies, music you own), by content providers *Learn How - how to do things within VMC Tasks - backend tasks to add content, change settings, etc. *Settings - change settings for menus, how content is arranged, etc. You can change TV Series backgrounds to cast photos, for example. *Shutdown *Burn CD/DVD - create your own music or video CD/DVD. Pick from content in your library, *Sync - add podcasts, shows, music to your portable media player *Add Extender - Media Center finds and configures your Media Extender on the network *Add Network Storage - VMC finds a network storage device and integrates it into your library. If your files there aren't tagged, you can choose to tag them as well. *Codecs - view/add codecs to the media center. You can see how many files require a given codec. *Media Only - locks computer into VMC for use while you've got company That's how I'd arrange and upgrade Vista Media Center.     - Lost Windows Explorer I have completely lost Windows explorer - it is nowhere to be found on my computer. It is what I use most often to search for and organize files and folders. I'm not sure exactly when this happened, and can't really connect it to any other event - I haven't really had any other "suspicious" events recently. Is there a download for just Windows Explorer?     - popping sounds when viewing tv i've had my copy of media center on the shelf for a few years but decided to ressurect it. now when i watch tv live i hear intermittent popping sounds in the audio - every 2-3 seconds - and i don't remember having this problem before. it's really annoying! i've got a creative audigy sound card and nvidia 6800 video card, all the latest drivers, all the windows updates. also a hauppauge 500 tv tuner, also latest drivers. any suggestions?     - Suitable Replacement of Sonic Encoders Hi Forum Members: I have Windows XP Media Center 2005(2). My system is only 18 months old and I have spent most of that time fixing the "sonic encoders" within Media Center. I have Version 1 and they are extremely unstable and not very reliable. Sonic Encoders are only available to OEMs and Dell Technical Staff have absolutely "no clue" on what they are, how to fix or repair, etc. I've had to do several clean install (lost track over 10 in the past year) and several "repairs" to the Operating System in order to things working again. Since Christmastime, Microsoft Security Updates have been affecting my Operating System as well. In particular, the Internet Explorer, Media Center and other software?! The Create DVD portion of Media Center freezes and won't go past 2-3%. The Event Logs state "sonic burn error" but I don't see that error message at all???     - Upgrade MCE to XP Pro? I'm working on an MCE 2005 box for my employer that I'd like to use on a domain. Having dug around this newsgroup, I see that it's possible to do that, but my boss has already purchased an XP Pro upgrade. When I try to perform the upgrade, I get the message,"The CD key you entered is invalid". I've followed the instructions in the KB article 310637 to no avail. Am I barking up the wrong tree?     - Screen resolution Over the past few weeks, occasionally when I changed logon, the screen resolution changed until it was very low and looked very rough. I could not change the resolution back. If I turned off the laptop, it returned OK. Now it is like this all the time. I have Trendmicro internet security installed and there are no viruses.     - Black Screen My LCD monitor goes black directly after the HP start up screen and before Windows screen.....I know the computer is not in standby.....the green monitor light is on and when I push the monitor light on and off and then the monitor displays the usual window for 1 second and then goes back.....the only way I am able to get it to stay on is to keep the power on for a while and then by turning it on and off use those bried fleeting seconds to open up the device manager window and clip on the display adapter and it sometimes will go on at that moment or when I hit the update bar. The video card is imbedded in the MB. I have tried an old CRT and that worked right away at startup....after I plugged mine back in it worked to....I thought problem solved....No...just shut it down for a while and back to square 1...I also tried hooking it up to an old laptop running Windows 95 and the monitor had the same problem.....I updated my ATI card and that did nothing to resolve the problem.....do I need to purchase another monitor? thanks in advance to anyone that responds.     - Vista MCE is a POS.... I have tried everything to make this thing work, but I have failed misrably... I give up, IT's a POS... The Video Library feature Crashed all the freaking time, everytime freaking... I select "video library", click... it crashes... the little whurly thing comes on and thats it, the screen never changes... the remote is dead... the mouse is dead... the only thing I can do is "alt, cntrl, del" to end VMCE... Once I'm to the desktop, VMCE never will restart... I must restart the computer to get it active again... But this time I will get VMCE to work all the way up to actualy playing a *.wmv or *.dvr-ms file in the library... and then when I use the "Back" button on the remote, it crashes, but not all the times... and I need to restart the whole computer, again... My library consists of files on my Local machine (Vista Home Premium) and files on two Networked machines (WinXP 32bit Pro & 64Bit Pro)... VMCE will crash as I desribed, no matter what machine I am trying to play a file from... file sharing works great, from the desktop... although I can't seem to share my Printer with anyone on the network, says "users need a P/W" but doesn't say how to set it... All my machs are set with NO p/w and I am the Admin when I log onto each mach... its just a Home network for crying out loud... I have had some success with NOT using the "back" button, and instead, using the MC button to goto the start... but many times when I manuver back to the Video library, to select another file to play... it crashes anywhere during the process... and I must restart the computer again... Does anyone know how to fix this? or should I junk it altogether? Overall, the Vista OS is pretty streamlined and is stable, but the MCE part is a POS... My hardware is all New... and if you need to know: Gigabit P35 chipset Mobo, Intel Pentium D 930, OCZ 2x2g(4g) mem, Rosewill RAID PCIe1x, 2ea Seagate 250g SATAII, MSI NX8500GT 256, 2ea Harppage HVR1600 tuners... I'm just about feed up enough to FDisk and re-install MCE2005, that one worked great... very simple to add/delete instances in my library... MCE2005 is very stable... what went wrong with Vista?     - Black Screen When entering Media Center I have an HP Z565 Media Center XP PC; I upgraded from the 7600 GS video card to a Vision Tek Radeon HD2600XT using the drivers from 4/16/08. Everything works fine except Media Center. When I go into Media Center I get the startup sound, and then the screen goes black. A dxdiag shows No problems found. DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful. Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful. Direct3D 8 test results: All tests were successful. and games such as UT3 run fine, google earth and earthsim run fine, Windows Media Player runs fine and plays every video file I have with no issues. Any suggestions would be welcome; I have imaged the box and then reloaded the box from the ground up and this still persists so I restored the original image since a clean load did not help.     - How do I replace MPEG2 audio codec in MCE I do not have audio when watching live digital tv in MCE. Analog tv is fine and digital and analog are fine when using WinTv app. So I think I must have MPEG2 installed, but it seems like it isn't available to MCE. MCE Decoder Checkup utility shows default as MS MPEG2 for video and MS MPEG1 for audio. I also have Cyberlink codecs available but the cause MCE to close when starting live tv. I downloaded and installed a codec pack for vistas and it appeared to install properly, but do not show up in the Checkup Utility.     - Problems starting form cold start I have an HP MCE m495c with Intel Pentium 4, 3.20 GHz, my problem is if I shut down my computer down and leave it down over night I have a very hard time getting it to re-start. These are the sequences: 1. Push on of button 2. I can hear the hard drive cycling; I hear it running for a couple seconds and then a click sound, 3. Sometimes it just runs without trying to load the Operating System up. 4. I may have to shut it down as many as 6 times before it stops cycling and goes to the net screen. 5. When it gets pass the cycling part the next screen has instructions to push any key to continue, sometime this doesnâ??t work every time. 6. If hitting the key doesnâ??t make it continue I have to wait for the clock at the bottom of the statement to run down t ZERO and then it will start. 7. I replaced the hard drive with a new one and loaded Windows XP, after installing XP I shut the computer down and tried to re-start it. Even after changing the drive and loading XP fresh it still will not re-start as it should, it still has the same problem with the new drive. Can anyone please help.     - usb thumb drive My thumb usb drives do not work on this computer now. When I first bought them, I plugged in and they came right up. One went out. the other worked. I replaced the thumb and it worked. now it does not, niether does the other one. Both work on other computers.. I plug them in and they activate and they are listed as installed and working propertly in device manager, but they do not show up under my computer or windows explorer. Just not there, but the device is loaded. It is invisible and can not use it. Tried deleting the 2 gb card and shutting down computer, rebooting. Thumb usb works on all the other computers and my home computer. Ativa support says it must be a windows issue, currupt file or something.     - XP Start up problem solution? Alright, so i have had this problem for a couple days now, where my computer is not booting up right, it kept on getting jam. So, Ive search around the internet, and come to a conclusion that reinstalling the OS is the only solution. But the problem is I dont have a Windows XP Media Center Edition CD, and when i bought my Acer notebook it didnt came with one.     - I lost permissions I restarted my system and now I get error message "windows cannot access the specified device,path,or file.You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." My firewall and anti-virus stopped loading the only thing that loads is the volume control and spydoctor all my desk top is showing all the files but i cannot access them.     - Setting up 2 Tuners on my Media Center I have been trying to set up my analog TV signal with a HDTV antenna signal on my media center and it will not work. They will work independently but not together, is there an update or anything that I can do so I do not have to always reconfigure my TV setup if I want to switch from analog TV to over the air HDTV.     - Video Library checking Mobile Phone for multimedia resource, crash So in the SP1 for Vista they made removable drives show up in the Video Library. Which for me is annoying becuase my monitor has a 6in1 card reader. Thankfully it only achieves this via 4 slots, but all 4 show up in the Video Library, even if they are empty. While this is annoying, it's not where my problem is. SP1 also introduced Mobile Device Center. Which now pickes up my phone (HTC Touch) with out having to install it off the CD my provider gave me. My phone shows up as a peripheral in My Computer and I can access it's file system. However, Media center tries to read from my phone (looking for resources I'm assuming) when I goto the Video Library and subsequently stops responding. I have to end the processes manually, unplug my phone, and then restart media center to have it show the contents of the Video Library correctly.     - Vista Media Center not detecting Tuners I've a new HP system with the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium. It has a TV Tuner card. Device Manager identifies it as ViXS Pure TV-U 48B0 (NTSC/ATSC combo). I'm new to this and have no idea what this means. Anyway, it's suppost to have 2 tuners that ate internally routed so that one can record one channel and watch another or record 2 different channels. When I run Media Center setup it states that it can detect other tuners, but only one with a tv signal. HP support says reinstall Vista from teh recovery disks.     - No longer able to use video library I use Media Center to stream videos to my Xbox 360, but I haven't for a while. I went to watch a video today, and when I selected 'Video Library', a dialog box popped up saying 'Adding Media' and 'searching for files...', at which point my Xbox became unresponsive, and a few minutes later, it said the PC had disconnected. I've since tried everything I could think of, and I still can't get it to work. I've tried resetting the Xbox and PC, reinstalling the extender, removing every directory but the one I want from the watch list... nothing seems to work. I've checked, and this issue is not just on the Xbox, Media Center crashes when I try to access Video Library on my PC. I seem to be able to access everything else though. I also check the event viewer, and the error shown there says that an unauthorized window was detected with the name 'Microsoft Windows' and the file name 'C:\Windows\System32\WerFault.exe'. Does the tuner show up without error in your Device Manager?

If yes, try going through TV Tuner setup again.
If no, you might want to try re-installing the tv tuner drivers (check to
see if there are updated drivers while you are at it).
