Got my TV tuner working on my new PC, but my picture is in black and white.
I've never seen it working in color and I apparently can't get it working
correctly. Anyone know how to fix this?

It's connected using an S-video cable with an adapter. They came with my
computer. I connected everything according to the instructions that came with
my computer.

I did some research online and found something on the HP website that told
me to reinstall the TV tuner driver. But when I go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, PC
HELP AND TOOLS....there's no option to go to HP APPLICATION RECOVERY, then
DRIVER INSTALLATION. Not sure if there's a typo in the instructions or what
so I then went to CONTROL PANEL, DEVICE MANAGER, SOUNDS/VIDEO/GAME
CONTROLLERS and updated the drivers - there were 2 of them for a Hauppauge TV
tuner. That didn't work either.

Any assistance you can give me would be appreciated....I'm bored with
calling HP and being on the phone with them for an hour trying to resolve
this.

If you have another s-video cable around, you could try it. A bad s-video
cable (broken wire, bent pin, bad connection, etc.) can cause loss of color.

If you don't have another cable, do you have another device with an s-video
connection you could use to test?

Do other program appear in color such as a DVD played in MC?
I am confused when you say you are using an S-video cable with and adapter
since the only S-video cable adapters that I am aware of only convert
S-Video to composite and can not be used to convert composite to S-Video.

I have no extra cables around. I'm just using what was provided with the
computer I recently bought. My cables are brand new and I have no extras. I
was hoping to avoid buying new cables. I guess I could get new cables and
then return them if that doesn't fix the problem.

Eveything else works in color...the sample clips provided and I can play DVDs
in color. I just seems to be LIVE TV which doesn't work. The recording
function works fine...it just records in black and white. At least my stuff
is being recorded as I have no VCR....but watching it back in black and white
is ......... let's say ....... strange.

Oh sorry, regarding the cables, I am using an adapter that converts composite
to a 4 pin end - these came with my computer. I will look again at all my
cabling as I'm going to buy some new cables and see if that fixes things.

In the meantime, if you can think of anything else, I'm willing to try it.
Thanks.

As I stated in my previous the adapter to you have only works in one
direction from S-Video to composite. It can not properly convert a two wire
signal into a 4 wire signal which has B&W and color on separate pins from
the ground pins.

You will have to shift to using RF via Coax from your STB to the
cable/antennas connection on your tuner card and then set the output channel
number on your STB to either channel 3 or 4 as appropriate for you location
since your tuner card can not accept a composite input and your STB
apparently does not have a S-Video output.

Just as an aside, never assume that a new cable will work.
For the sake of troubleshooting, you should check the cables to make sure
they are actually working.

Hi JW....well I took all the cabling apart tonight and put it all back
together using coax cables. I basically had to take the coax cable from the
STB and use a splitter connecting one cable out to my TV and one cable out to
my computer. I rebooted my computer, ran the MediaCenter setup again and now
my Live TV is in color. Thanks for your advice.

I used the red, white and yellow composite cables to connect my computer to
my TV as now I'm trying to view my computer on my TV. I fudged with that for
an hour tonight, but got burned out. I tried a few things under Display
Settings on my computer, but nothing worked. Any ideas?

Again, thank you for your help. I will "rate" your posting accordingly. Liz

How are you connecting your computer to the TV to use composite and stereo
audio.
The composite connection would have to come from your computers graphics
card and the audio from your computers sound card. And then you would have
to be configure the second display in your graphics card/display drivers.
