I have an problem where the sound pauses for about a half a second at random
times during HD playback only. The video is not effected nor is the pause
repeatable if replayed. There doesn't appear to be a cpu utilization issue
during these episodes and plenty of memory is available. The problem does not
occur during SD playback and not specific a particular sound mode.

I am running Vista SP1 on a Asus P5LD2 mb with a Intel Core 2 1.86GHz CPU
with 2Gb of RAM and a nVidia 8600GT video card with 256Mb of memory. The mb
has onboard Realtech HD sound which I am using via the S/PDIF output to a AV
receiver.

Are you using the latest Realtech sound drivers from the Asus Website for
your MOBO or ones you obtained from another source?

I've tried the lastest Realtech drivers from Asus and the Realtech site -
both versions produce the same reuslts. I've even tried removing the Realtech
driver and rely on the driver Vista installs - same results.

Microsoft recently released and update that I didn't see via WindowsUpdate
that is supposed to address stuttering issues. More info here:

Sounded good, but didn't help the situation. Could this be a cpu speed issue?

Well, I found the solution and it's simple too - more memory. I guess what
they say about Vista being a resource hog is true, 2Gb of RAM was just not
enough - with 4Gb the sound pauses are history (and the system boots much
faster now)!

Geez Microsoft, I hope Vista won't need anymore as this is the max for my
motherboard. Kinda gives a reason why the enterprise has not adapted, huh?
