MSN's useless EPG
Hi,
I have been using Media Center for a few years now. First on XP then
on Vista. I mostly watch TV5 on Dish Network channel 731 in San
Francisco Bay. For the last week the listing of the EPG for TV5 is
wrong. At first I thought that I wasn't getting an update but that's
not it. I go to the MSN TV site and it bad there too. There are some
programs that are correct, mostly the one that repeat every day like
the news and game shows but movies are way off and even if it says
movie, there is no description so you don't have a clue what is on. It
would be like HBO saying , Movie, Movie, Movie, Movie. A lot of good
that does.
Anyway I mostly use my Media Center to record program to watch when I
have time. Since they have stopped updating the listing, it has become
nearly useless to me.
I am feeling frustrated with it and I am thinking about going over to
some other Media Time shifting system.
Anyone knows of an email address to Microsoft where I can rant?
Anybody has ever been successful in using a different source for the
EPG. The listing on Zap2it or TitanTV are correct. I would love to get
them instead of that cr....y MSN.

Xbox 360 and Media Center error
Everytime I try to connect my computer with Windows Media Center and my Xbox
360 it says " The xbox 360 was unable to prepare a connection to the windows
vista media center-based pc." Then I restart and try again and it still

Windows automatic or any updates to not install
I'm getting "Some updates were not installed" AT this point I've racked up
35 updates that aren't installing. Are there any hot fixes or ways to get
update to recognize my valid genuine version of windows. (I recently had a
computer failure...so had to rebuild and did a repair install of my windows
xp pro program. Perhaps it's not recognizing I am licensed?) Please advise

Some Channels Juddering (E4)
I have recently set up a media centre to run the home TV. Everything is
working fine, except a couple of channels (E4, Channel 4) are juddering and
are unwatchable. My normal cheap freeview receiver had no problems with these
channels, but to be sure, I tried a digital TV booster which has made no
difference at all.
All other channels are perfect, it never complains about lack of signal, and
it found the channels straight away in the scan, but they just can't be
watched properly.
I have ensured that I have all the latest drivers, does anyone have any

Media Center no longer recognises antenna signal
Hello,
My Windows Media Center (Vista 32) no longer scans for channels from the antenna
connection.
I used to be able to scan for DVB-T and receive all my local HD channels but
now it finds no services. Not even on Analog Terrestial.
I have a Hauppauge HVR-1200 TV tuner and recently tested several other PVR
software packages (GB-PVR, MediaPortal, SageTV, WinTV). None were as good as
the Windows Media Center so I uninstalled them.
Now when I go to set up my tv signal, I select DVB-T and then it goes to the
SetTop Box setup option rather than the scan for channels option.
Any clues as to how I can fix this? I've reinstalled drivers from the Hauppauge
site but it makes no difference so I'm guessing it's a Media Center setting
or something causing the problems.
Any ideas?

Since having to reformat my system, I can't get the screensavers to work
even though I set them up in DISPLAY PROPERTIES (right-clicking on the
desktop). When the time I set for the SS to begin has elapsed with no
activity on my part, nothing happens. Can someone shed some light on why
this may be happening (or not happening, I should say!).
The screensaver does work when I click the "Preview" button, but that's
meaningless when I bump the mouse and it reverts to the desktop. I also
changed the Power from EnergyStar to Home Office/Desk, but no soap.

nVidia MediaShield
I have a gigabyte KN8NF9 motherboard and MCE2005. I run a RAID1 and
nVidia MediaShield does not show any RAID device at all. System
Device Manager shows an nVidia RAID, and it is clearly set up in the
BIOS. Gigabytes answer to date is that MCE is not on the supported OS
list. I am sure this worked just fine once upon a time, and having
uninstalled and reinstalled all of the nVidia software, either it does
not work through some incompatibility that was introduced, or
something else happened to break it.
Does anyone else run RAIDs and expect MediaSHield to work, and does it
work on MCE?

Navigation Issue
Hi All,
I have the following issue:
When I use the remote control using the directional keys
(up/down/left/right) I have great difficulty to select all items as for some
reason items are skipped. So if I press up once in a list of items, it
doesn't go to the item above, but is goes to the item above that one. This is
an example of course but it works like that for all directional keys. That
means that in a folder with e.g. a lot of pictures, I'm able to navigate to
about 50% if all items, so you can believe this is not workable and very
annoying.
I'm using an original Microsoft MCE remote, and (so far) haven't had any
other issues with the remote.

After Windows updates, User profile won't load half the time
After I downloaded some Windows XP updates, my User profile (the only profile
on my laptop) only loads about 1/2 the time. When it won't load, I get an
error window that comes up stating that the User Profile cannot be loaded
because of "insufficient system resources". Since I am the only User, with
only 1 profile, it chooses to load the "default" profile (which takes FOREVER
to load, unlike the normal User profile load) and loads all of my desktop
icons and programs. However, it does NOT load my wallpaper (just a plain blue
screen), and my POP3 e-mail program required me to create a new identity just
to see my regular e-mail (I did not have to create a different e-mail user
account, however). It makes no difference if I cold boot or warm boot; it
just seems to decide all by itself when it wants to load and when it doesn't.
Oh, and I've already tried unloading the updates, defrag, Trend Micro

Media Center pause control won't stay paused
When playing a DVD movie, the pause control seems to work, but always when I
come back from the interruption, the movie is aleady playing again. That is,

Can I use my M-Audio device with Windows XP Media Center Edition?
A: No, M-Audio device drivers are not supported under Windows XP Media
Center Edition (WMCE). While WMCE shares many of the features of Windows XP
Professional, it is a distinct version of Windows XP; separate from both XP
Professional and XP Home. Windows XP MCE is customized by each manufacturer
(Dell, HP, Compaq, etc) for the hardware included in their systems. The
manual for Windows XP MCE states that third-party sound devices are not
supported; only the built-in motherboard sound device or card that originally
came with the system is supported. Additionally, M-Audio USB devices
designed to function without installing a driver (aka â??class compliant
devicesâ??) are also not supported under WMCE.

Duplicate songs on networked pc's
When I use media center on other networked computers in my house all of the
songs show up twice. If I try and delete a duplicate song from the list then
the song disappears completely from the hosting media center PC... The
hosting PC works fine and only shows 1 instance of each song, it's just the

VISTA MCE Question
Hi guys,
Is there a way to watch live tv while recording another show on Vista?
I have a hauppage 1600 card. I do not have over the air HDTV. I do
have a set top box from cablevision. Which works well now and I can
record and watch pretty much what I want, except of course for the
HDTV channels from cablevision which show the gray bars on both sides
of the picture. But what I would like to do is while recording a show
in VMC via the set top box, can I watch another live show maybe
playing at the same time I am recording another show? For example let
us say at 8pm Ghost whisperer and Lost are coming on at the same time.
While recording Ghost Whisperer can I watch Lost or even record Lost
at the same time? If so how do I do that in VMC.

Xbox 360-Vista MCE Extender-no startup menu options&Icons
Hi,
I have encountered a very strange issue....
Yesterday I uninstalled Windows Live Onecare, installed Kaspersky Internet
Security 7.0, started up Vista MCE on my 360.... I accepted all the firewall
rule questions for the Xbox to access Vista resources....
The 360 logs into Vista fine, starts up the extender front end BUT, there
are no ICONs or menu options displayed at all.. Just the animated blue VISTA
MCE background.
On my MCE remote, if I press, My Videos, My TV, My Pics etc, it does go into
the appropriate option and functions fine - its just the main menu that is
blank..
My media access via the standard 360 interface all works perfectly..
Any ideas?

eyes. Have only read a bit so far but many of the girls have an item
called "Maken" - each are different and have varying powers when used
in battle. And as with all good school girl battles, their clothes
easily explode. And there are characters for folks who like loli's
too.
Maken Ki has been an entertaining read so far and look forward to

Removing an Unwanted/Strange Folder from a WMC Video Library listing
This is a second try at a problem/post I put-up a few days ago. I had some
names and facts wrong so I think it is best to restart from scratch...
I have setup WMC on a Vista box. Everything works fine except
when I scroll to the Video Library section the first folder is named after
the name of my c: drive
"MediaCenter1" .
This folder contains strange sub folders (16 of them) with titles like:-
Create Disk -- with subfolders - Components, Filters, SFXPlugins, Sonic
Resources, Stte, Styles
en-US -- with one subfolder Intro -- (Some kind of short demo video of
people in a room)
MIX -- with one subfolder Intro -- X02
Aspectratio4X3 (billiards demo). there are 16 in all.
When I go to my C:\ directory I find .wmv with titles like these in the
"C:\Windows\ehome" folder
(along with many .dll's etc.). Clearly WMC is including this folder in my
Video Library. I cannot seem to get rid of it. I tried including the folder
C:\ in the files to watch and then removed them from the files to watch with
no success.
Put simply. How do you remove a folder from the WMC video library listing.
Is there some Registry entry?

Media Center On-Line Content AOL Video Error
Hi All,
I am no longer able to access the AOL Video using Media Center 2005. I
receive the following bad URL message: Unable to connect to
http://fugumce.stream.aol.com/mce_vod/index.html .
I believe this link is now bogus. How do I update the Media Center to
connect to the proper link. My system is Win XP, SP3. I have downloaded and
applied all the current Media Center patches, including roll out 2.

S-video with vista and IR blasters
I have a media center PC and am pleased with it apart from it's inability to
connect to my STB. I have 2 tuner cards, both with S-video inputs and have
the microsoft IR receiver and emitters. This has been tried in every USB port
on the machine and still vista's media centre refuses to offer the option of

DVB-T TV tuner card for MCE
I recently had to format my HDD and reinstall the operating system. I have
made no hardware changes and the TV tuner PCI card shows up in the device
manager and I can view four (all BBC) channels through it. However, before
the reinstall, I could view all the channels available on Freeview but now a
scan shows no channels found. All the connections are good, as I can view TV
using the PCI card's bundled software but when I select Live TV in Media

Desktop Icons (Shortcuts) Disappeared
All of my desktop icons have disappeared. I can find them in 'My Documents'
but I cannot move them to my desktop. If I try I get the message 'Cannot
Move....Source and distribution file names are the same'. If I try to
shortcut another page (i.e. hotmail homepage), it will go directly to 'My
Documents'....it does not appear on my desktop. My question is.....how do I
get my 'shortcut' icons back on my screen?
I'm sure there is probably a simple way of doing this, but I am not very
computer-literate....Please keep that in mind when reply. I don't know a lot
about computers and I confuse easily so please can we keep it simple. Thank

Windows Installer Dialog Box
Hello. I just installed a new HP printer on my computer and I am now seeing a
"Windows Installer" dialogue box pop up on the screen when I start up the
computer. I have nothing to install that I know of. I have to keep hitting
"cancel" till the box goes away. And I am also getting a Windows Installer
Box pop up to install a program called Roxio which is already on my computer,
this happens when I double click an incon on my desktop to start up another
program. So these boxes are popping up and I don't know why, or how to get
rid of them. Anyone help?

What happened? I can no longer use my Radio Tuner
After SP1, I find that I can no longer use my Radio Tuner. After I setup
my TV Tuner in Vista Ultimate SP1 x86, and I try to run the Radio part in
WMC, I am told that I have to setup the Radio tuner and to do that I have to
setup my TV tuner, which I JUST DID!!!!!!! ARgggghhhhh

Connection Failure -- 360 and Media Center
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1, and am trying to connect my XBOX
360. Setup seemed to go fine, but each time I try to connect, I
receive the following error message:
"The Xbox 360 has experienced a failure and was disconnected from the
Media Center based PC. Would you like to reconnect?"
I've tried searching for the error message, and google only turns up a
small number of hits, none of which seem to have resolutions.
I have no problem streaming media from Media Player, but can't get

NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing, or corrupt
After a full cleaning up of the disk I made on my computer, I can´t start the
Windows. It says: "Windows could not start because the NTOSKRNL.EXE is
missing, or corrupt. And ask to re-instlll a copy of the obove file.
The problem is that I can´t find the intallation CD.
How can I solve this problem/ get this missing file?

Problem with latest Media Center Fix
Ever since Microsoft Update installed the latext fix to Media Center it's not
working right.
Media Center starts playing on its own frequently while paused.
This did not happen before the latest fix.
This is on Vista Ultimate 23 bit.

I'm about to purchase a new HDTV LCD TV. The one I want doesn't have PIP. I

I'll try to be brief. Recently had XP Home with Service Pack 2. Had some
problems with USB in course of solving it (with help) removed SP 2 and
reinstalled XP Home.
USB fine. When try to install SP 2, it copies files OK then hangs whenever
it checks for 'neccessary disk space'. In Task Manager, when this is
happening the processor is wiorking at 100% constantly.
In case it is relevant, Windows Explorer does not show status bar any more
by default - I have to show it every time I start up, sometimes when using
Windows Explorer, a 'preparing to install' box shows up briefly and then
disappears with no apparent effect.
Anyone got any ideas please ?

digital signature does not validate
I'm fighting a pesky error, that I believe is in XP. System is XP Pro SP3
with all updates.
Office 2003 suite is currently installed. I have a retail boxed CD of Office
2007 Home and Student. The first thing that appears when it is loaded is a
message: "D:\HomeStudentr.WW\OSETUP.DLL digital signature does not validate
or is not present." Click OK and nothing more is done/seen.
There are many reports of this problem in the Office 2007 sites, most
replies focus on the CD. It is NOT the CD. It works fine on another computer,
also I get the same error with this computer and another CD of Office 2007
HSE. It is not the CD reader either. Following some suggestions, I used
WinZip to extract the files and put them on a clean USB HDD. Same thing
happens there, too. It is definitely a software problem in XP or whatever
install package Office is using.
If the software in the system is corrupted somehow, what is the fix?
Might it be a missing root Certificate Authority?
Miss-behavior by a 3rd party firewall (it is using CA)?

I need be be able to burn audio discs for my car but my car will only read
MP3 files. Many of my audio files are in mp4 format. I've installed a
plugin that allows WMP to read mp4 but when burning I don't get an option
that I can tell to select what audio format I want my burned disc to use.
How can I tell WMP to burn my audio files to mp3?

"All Programs" doesn't appear on my Start Menu
When clicking on Start, the "All Programs" selection is not there. Where did
it go, and how do I restore it? To open a program, I now must go through My
Computer to open it.

Can't get Media Center to work after reinstallation
When I click on the Media Center icon to watch or record TV I get an error
message titled "ehshell.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services"
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process
id+0x1c0 (448), thread id+0x1c8 (456)
If I click OK to debug, it tells me that no debugger is available.
I don't know what to do. I cannot find a way to reinstall just the Media
Center portion of XP Home. I tried software repair wizard but it did not
list this program.
You ideas are appreciated.

Video Error- "Video decoder is either corrupt or not installed"
I have a Gateway and recently reformatted my hard drive and after
"successfully" setting up my television connection on Media Center, it will
not display television. My cable is plugged in so I'm not sure what to do.

fax to PC
Am having problem getting faxes to go directly to my PC. When my printer is
on, they automatically print out - which I don't want. If the printer is
off, that is when they will go to PC. Which means I keep having to turn
printer on when I want to print something - many times a day. A real pain.
