I'm running Vista Home Premium on a laptop with a wireless connection to a
Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824. I also have a XBox 360 with wired
connection to the same router. Both the PC and the XBox see each other and on
the XBox I can go to the "media blade" the choose either music or pictures
and play music. uPNP is on. No ports manually configured.

When I try to add the XBox as a media extender on the PC the XBox gives me
the 8 digit code and when I input it at the PC it tells me I have at least
one firewall (Norton Antivirus 2008 is the only other piece I have running)
in addition to Windows Firewall and tells me I need to manually configure it.
Media Center then keeps telling me there is a configuration error "an error
was encountered while configuring your computer for use with this extender".
I get the same error with the laptop wired and wireless connections.

I tried with windows firewall switched off. I tried turning off Norton
Antivirus 2008 (not uninstalling).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Uninstall Norton and reboot.
Turn on the windows firewall and reboot.
Try the setup again.

I have a similar problem:

I've been all over the internet looking for a solution to this and even
though it seems to have been around for a couple years I've yet to find an
answer that works.

I UPGRADED from XP Media Center Edition (through which the XBox 360 worked
perfectly as a MCX) to Vista Home Premium. When trying to add extender, the
PC sees the XBox 360 but after entering the 8 digit code and answering the
other 2 questions I get "PC Configuration Error: an error was encountered
while configuring your computer for use with this extender."

I've tried all the MS suggested solutions, all the solutions here (all the
ones I've found so far), and still cannot configure the extender.

My router is a D-Link DI-784 that is hardwired to the Xbox, but wireless to
my PC (Dell XPS M1710). The Xbox can see the PC and media sharing is turned
on and working.

The Log after attempting to configure shows:

Online help for error 113 shows:

Error Code -113
This error code indicates that the Windows Media Center Extender service is
not started. You should start the Windows Media Center Extender service.

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group,
or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To start the Windows Media Center Extender service:

1.
Click the Start button, then type services in the Start Search box and
press Enter.

2.
Under Services (Local), right-click Windows Media Center Extender Service,
and then click Properties.

3.
On the General tab under Service status, click Start.

Here I get another error:

Windows could not start the Windows Media Center Extender Service service on
Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

The only dependency service not running is PnP-X IP Bus Enumerator which
starts, then immediately stops:

The PnP-X IP Bus Enumerator service on Local Computer started and then
stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other
services or programs.

(I also had to start Function Discovery Provider Host but it started with no
problem).

I'm really anxious to get this working again as the improved Media Center in
Vista is the only reason I upgraded.

Any ideas here?

hi,

exact same problem here, with same error codes and with the additional error
log here:

The Windows Media Center Extender Service service depends on the PnP-X IP
Bus Enumerator service which failed to start because of the following error:
The operation completed successfully.

Event ID 7001.

I finally got mine to work without doing a clean install of Vista. I
did reinstall Vista but again selected "Upgrade." This time I let the
whole installation run and when I got to the desktop I ignored the
"available updates" and immediately configured Media Center. Last time
I configured Media Player 11 first for media sharing. This time the
Media Center Extender configuration worked perfectly, THEN I
configured Media Player 11 and media sharing. Other subtle differences
this time: my networked hard drive (WD NetCenter) was not running but
it was the first time; all my drivers were updated this time but the
first time at least one crashed the system before I tried to configure
the extender (DLA).

Knowing what I know now I'd do the following (in order of simplicity,
not necessarily confidence):
turn off any networked storage, then disable media sharing, then
uninstall Media Player 11. I'd try to reconfigure the extender after
each step and if it still fails, then I'd do the reinstall (upgrade).
The clean install for me was an absolute last resort that I thankfully
did not have to endure.

got mine working as well, although I chose the hard path of a clean install.

your action makes sense though, I have suspected wmc to conflict with the
media center.

Next challenge is the hard part I guess: How, (for an non native english
person) does one configure mc so that it works with subtitles? but that is
another thread.
