Running XP Home on a Dell Dimension 9150. I attempted to remove Mcafee 8.0
before upgrading to 8.5 and somehow my registry became corrupted and I
cannot remove this program. Moreover McAfee is now disfunctional. On the
McAfee web site they suggest a very convoluted procedure for removing this
program which invloves some serious surgery on the registry.
As an an alternative a colleague suggested that I run an OS upgrade to XP
PRO and this might free up the registry. I have a slipstream CD for Pro but
am loath to do this unless there is some chance that it will do the trick.
Other than this problem my system seems to function fine. My question is:
will this approach overcome the registry problem. If so, how shall I run the
upgrade to PRO.....Many thanks --

I would suggest re-installing 8.0 and then attempt another uninstall.

That was my initial approach, but until I remove the existing 8.0 version no
other version of Mcafee can be installed--

I'm not sure if you just mistyped your reply or didn't understand the
suggestion.

The thought was to reinstall *8.0*, not a different version -- sometimes
reinstalling the same version overwrites the bad registry entries and allows
the removal of the same.

If that is what you meant and have already tried, then ignore this post.

I've had good luck with the removal tool:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html

I've had it on a memory stick for ages now, so I don't remember where
I originally got it, but Major Geeks is a decent download site.

Good Luck!
