Harold,
I use Snapstream's BeyondTV to record TV programs in HD. Since I've never
wanted to keep the stuff that we view on TV long term I record to rewritable
DVDs. However, if the material you recorded is in HD (~8 GB/hr), it won't
fit on a DVD.
BeyondTV has several compression options. I use the DIVX option but you need
a DIVX certified stand alone player buy these are fairly inexpensive these
days. Last night I recorded Live from Lincoln Center which was 3 hours and
almost 21 GB. BeyondTV compressed it to 1.9 GB in DIVX format. Although it
is no longer HD, the quality is more than satisfactory for my wife when
viewed on our HDTV.
