Re Windows XP and photo files. I have some photo files (.tif) that when I
right click, open Properties, go to Summary Tab, and add some text to the
Comments, I get the message "Changes to Summary Properties Could not be
saved; access has been denied. The file may be marked read-only or may be in
use by another application" when I try to save it. The files are not read
only (verified in cmd window/ attributes). So some other program has locked
the ability to enter summary information. Does anyone know how to "reset"
these files so I can edit the summary information? I have tried resaving
them, copying them to another computer, but the denial seems to travel with
the file. If I convert them to a jpg, I have access again, but technically,
it is better for me not to convert because it automatically compresses the
files which I don't want. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ifranview actually has a nice flow to it, but the problem resides in
the Windows XP Properties->Summary tab of a file where I am locked out from
writing a comment. The comment that Ifranview allows does not get embedded
in the Properties. I need this so I can sort a 'detail' list of files in an
Explorer window by Comment. Anybody aware of how to release a file?

There are much better and more reliable ways of imbeding comments in an
Image file. Windows XP summary is propriety and is not imbeded in the image
file. When Windows XP crashes, so does your stored summary.

Irfanview is a good program to use, because it actually writes the info into
the image file.

If you want a very sophisticated cataloging system for images, use one that
has a database.

Check out ThumbPlus.

Also check out Photoshop Elements 6.

Thank you, that I didn't know, and takes care of me using that format.
ACDSee is also a strong photo organizing program with its own database as
well.
