Windows Installer Problem
I get this messsage when trying to install:
Windows Installer Installation Wrapper
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if
you are running Windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not
currently installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
The Long Story:
It started when I was installing an applicaiion and got an error saying a
file could not be found. I would get this error when booting up the computer
and everything ran slow.
I tried installing a cleanup uility but it could not install because windows
installer was busy installing something else. This was the case installing
anything.
I ran services.msc and shut off windows installer. This elimintaed the
error message at boot up but I still could not install anything. THis is
when I started getting the message at the top of this posting.
I tried turning Install to manual and to automatic using services.msc but
nothing seems to work. I have used disc cleanup and defragmenter to no avail.
I can't install updates or any programs.

Slow performance immediately after XP boot
I've just very recently started having a problem with my Dell desktop with XP
home edition.
The system boots up fine and launches into windows quickly. However, after
I enter my user profile, certain things I can't seem to do for at least 10
minutes. At first I thought it was just internet connection related because
one of the first things I always do is launch IE. IE will sit for sometimes
over 10 minutes doing nothing until finally the home page will appear (or any
other website for that matter).
However I soon realized it was more than IE... If I try to get into System
Properties immediately after launch and several other system related
activities such as add remove programs, the system does nothing for over 10
minutes.
After this delay period everything seems to work fine.
I've tried running Virus Scan - both Avast (did a bootscan) and AVG (and
originally had PC - cillin running. I've tried removing everything out of
startup (meaning Run in MSConfig/Registry). I've tried removing all mapped
drives and shared folders. Defragged, removed temp files, cleanup disk.
Two things I can think of that I did around the time this started - one was
I attempted to setup a home network. The second was I installed Avast
antivirus. I've since tried removing Avast to no avail, and tried changing
my home network as there seems to be no way to delete/remove a home network.
I'm not really sure I believe any of these are related.

Memory Optimization Problem in Windows XP
Hi:
I am using a free memory optimization software for Windows XP called FReeRam.
I have an advanced option which disables executive paging.
The Virtual Memory set up is system managed.
I have 1GB of RAM memory in my laptop.
I have always the same problem that apparently Windows XP has a lot of
memory leaking problems because the memory optimizer program is automatically
invoked especially when I open several tabs in Windows IE 7 or invoke
openoffice.
My questions are the following:
1) Does Windows XP has normally a lot of memory leaking?
2) Is sufficient 1GB of RAM to have executive paging disabled?
3) Should I increase the RAM to 1.5 or 2GB and Does XP uses optimally memory
above 1GB?
4) Is it recommended to have the VM disabled to increase performance?
5) What is the best Registry set up for memory optimization in Windows XP?
Any recommendations?
Cheers

user defined keyboard shortcut
Is there a way for me to define a new keyboard shortcut under winXP?
There's times when I go through so many key/moustrokes to a certain website
etc. that I sorely miss it.
For example: Google has this excellent new translate tool in therr Labs
beta (http://translate.google.com/translate_dict?q=&hl=en&langpair=en%7Cde)
. I frequently need it when I'm, say, typing a paper in word or an email in

Open Firefox->Google Bookmarks-->Search for the translate tool -> Go to it
and add my phrase.
If I could do a (say) Ctrl+Alt+GG and get there from anywhere , it'd be
awesome!
Any ideas or similar hacks for this issue?

copying from a usb drive and copying from the lan network(the transfer speed

workstation disaster recovery - disk imaging?
Hello,
I've been running small networks for enough years to recognize that I spend
too much time wiping hard drives clean and reinstalling their OS. Maybe
it's only every three or four years, but it's an hours long process, what
with all the updates & patches. Now I'm exploring ways to improve this
process. I'm considering disk imaging software (like Acronis True Image and
Norton Ghost), and wondering about XP's System Restore.
Is XP's System Restore reliable, and can I make a restore point after the
initial, clean install, and keep that restore point?
Is that as effective as wiping the hard drive clean, and copying a ghosted
image of that initial clean install?
If I use disk imaging software, do I need to take a complete copy of the
drive, or can I just somehow copy pertinent drivers and operating system
files?
I'm wondering about the space implications, and where this info is stored.
I gather that many new PCs come with a hidden partition which contains some
mysterious recovery utility? But what use is that, if, after a few years,
the hard drive dies? If the hard drive dies, then I suppose an image of
that drive would be useless, unless it's replaced by the exact same model
number?
In a network of 25 workstations, which would be more sensible:
Get enough external harddrive space and disk imaging software, make & store
images of all the workstations, then if something gets
corrupted/infected/otherwise bogged down I can just restore the good image?
Would it be better to use server storage space for this?
Or am I okay relying on XP's System Restore?
So many questions... Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might share!!

After using Add/Remove, now system won't boot properly
Someone I know who has a Windows XP Pro desktop computer has AOL
running on it with McAfee Firewall (which is apparently tied in
with the AOL).
Recently, because of some access problem, the McAfee Firewall had been
set to "Allow All". (There are three settings, "Allow All" programs to
access the internet, "Filter" (selectively allow some but not others),
and "Allow None").
Later, it was decided that "Allow All" would be too hazardous and that
it should be set instead to "Filter".
After this was done, it was discovered that no internet access at all
was occurring. When the McAfee Firewall icon was launched, a pop-up
window would say something like "Would you like to turn on the McAfee
firewall service? Yes/No". When "Yes" was clicked, the box would
vanish but reappear about three seconds later. When "Yes" was clicked
again, the box would again vanish only to reappear about three seconds
later. So there was apparently some infinite loop, and the only way to
dismiss the box was to click on "No". But of course, this meant still
no internet access. (The DSL internet line, by the way, was OK. If we
plugged it into an alternate computer, we were able to access the
internet just fine).
Then we had the idea of uninstalling the McAfee Firewall. We went into
the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and specifed uninstall of the
McAfee Firewall as well as a few Windows Live programs. When we
restarted the computer, the bootup process got to the point of
displaying the blank desktop with its textured background and was
about to place the program icons on it but didn't actually get to that
point. It instead just displayed the blank desktop and that was it.
(There was no taskbar at the bottom of the screen and therefore no
Start Menu button). There was a mouse arrow which would move if the
mouse was moved (but there was nothing on the desktop to click on). If
we did Ctrl+Alt+Del, a Task Manager would eventually appear after some
long delay, but when we clicked on "Shut Down", a box came up saying
"Ending EXPLORER" but it didn't complete and we had to click on "End
Task", which left us still on the blank desktop.
We were able to shut off the computer only by pressing the power
button and holding it in for about 10 seconds.
We then tried booting up in Safe Mode with Networking. Similar to
before, the black desktop was displayed with nothing on it except the
"Safe Mode" captions along the edges of the desktop, but no program
icons on it and no taskbar at the bottom of the screen. As before, the
only way to turn off the computer was to press and hold the power
button for about 10 seconds.
I'd normally think of running System Restore, but how would I do that
under these circumstances? If I knew the .exe name and path of System
Restore, I could try to run it from the Task Manager's "New Task
(Run)". Does anyone know the .exe name and path of System Restore?
Does anyone know what else could be done?

Windows XP frozen and safe mode freezes also-have unsaved files! H
Hello! I have Windows XP 2005 Media version and I use AVG for virus
protection. My computer is approx 18 months old and under warranty but I am
not getting any help over the phone and that is all they are offering at this
point.
I have files saved on my computer that I had not backed up and do need to
recover if I at all can. I have a flash drive ready to do that! Trust me
when I say I have learned my lesson and I don't plan to save anything
directly on my computer. I will use CDs and Flash Drives to maintain my
files for when I need them.
My computer was working fine until approx 1 week ago. When I turned
on my computer, it froze (locked) up. I was able at one point during the day
to get the computer to let me open up in safe mode. I performed Check Disk
and it told me that the volume in C was dirty. It proceeded on to check the
rest of the disk. However, when it completes and goes to the log in page and
I clik on my icon, the system freezes up. Now I cannot even open up in safe
mode as it freezes (locks) up in safe mode as well. Today,I called Dell as
my computer is still under warranty, and was told she could help me to do a
system retore and I would lose all of my files, etc. She advised that first
I contact a local repair person to get them to help me to back up my files
and then call her back to complete the system restore. I couln't get any
other info or help and ended the phone call more confused and stressed. I
have many files that I have not backed up on any other source and I know I
should have done so all along.
I have been able to do the F12 and all the tests pass. If I do F8 and go to
prev safe configuration it will bring up the sign in page, but freezes up
when I click on the icon and try to input my password.
What is causing this? Is my drive corrupted? How can I fix this without
losing all my files? I need my computer desparately and need your help even
more.
I opened the computer and cleaned it out. It still freezes up. I am at a
loss and desperately need help!
I am not very computer illiterate when it comes to the this type of technical
part of a computer. I follow directions well and am eager for some help to
get my computer fixed soon!
I hope I have given enough info for someone to be able to help me fix my
computer if at all possible!

network shared drive to a local hard disk. Is it the normal speed of XP? I
have 2 Servers, 1 DC and 2 file server, Trend Micro Office Scan server, SQL
Server and Exchange.

There is no log files folder in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\
What sort(s) of logs should there be? I'm hoping to generate & retrieve WMI
trace logs.

Task Manager
Is there a way to "turn off" some or all of the items in "Processes". Not
just End Process, but turn them off for good. Also, my taskbar is getting
full of items I do not need to have "on" when I start my computer. Some of
the items do not have property menu to trun them off or remove remove them.

Sometimes when I open the explorer, my screen is frozen. How can you help me
to solve this problem ?
