Windows Update Slows Down Operation

The ScanningProcess associated with Windows Update is a heavy resources
consumer and slows down my computer significantly. The same during
installation of updates. I have two questions in regard:

1. How do I reduce its resource consumption so it doesn't affect Windows
operation as much?

2. It used to install updates during Windows Shutdown, but it doesn't do
that anymore. How do I set it to do most of the work during shutdown?

When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to applications
that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve the Svchost.exe process

You can't.

Do you really want that to happen?

Take control of the process by manually downloading at a time convenient
to you.

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates uncheck Automatic and check
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install". When notified
commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support, Keep your
computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt for a Custom install.
