Running XP Home, SP2 on a Packard-Bell machine. I was trying to get contacts
& calendar from Palm desktop to a new iPhone via Outlook. Long detail of
actions at bottom. End result - the particular user account now gets 'user
doesn't have permission for file or folder' errors for *all* programs, the
start menu quick-start section is blank. How do I get the permissions sorted
out without losing latest Outlook emails (the other files I can manage)?
I tried to read the iPhone guide & found pdf files weren't opening. I tried
re-installing Acrobat Reader, something happened to interrupt the
installation. It wouldn't install without the old version being uninstalled.
I ran Remove Programs & ended up with a partially-removed program that
wouldn't uninstall because Windows couldn't find one file and I couldn't
install a replacement because that could see an existing installation. I went
back to a Restore point two days earlier & found Office no longer worked. I
ran the CD to repair Office, it said this was okay, I then had further
problems so told it to re-install. I then lost access to *all* programs for
that user. The programs run fine for other accounts on the same machine.
