    - System clock switches from AM to PM or PM to AM by itself This started after my last vacation. I left my computer off for about 12 days. When I returned and started it up I noticed the time was 12 hours slow. I changed the time to the correct one using the atomic clock on my wall, verified by my cell phone and by nist.gov website. I've had to change the time about 10 times a day because it keeps changing itself to the incorrect time, 12 hours in the past. The minutes seem to stay correct, keeping in sync with my atomic clock but the PM/AM or AM/PM is always the opposite. I've changed the time in BIOS. I've changed the time in command prompt. Both times using military time. I can't find how to change my windows lock to 24 hour mode to maybe fix this but that's not what I need. I've run 2 anti-spyware programs and neither found any issue I wasn't already aware of (such as some programs starting when windows does, which I need them to). I didn't install or remove any programs before or after shutting the computer down for that 12 day period. I've changed the CMOS battery. The one I took out has perfect voltage as does the new one. I've unchecked 'auto adjust for dst'; sync with windows and/or time.nist but it won't sync. When it did sync a day after this issue started, it synced 12 hours slow. My PC is custom using AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 4600+ at 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM. I'm running WinXP SP2 Home. ** I am now looking at my system properties and it shows my processor is at 1.00GHz. This may be my issue. It's a fairly new processor and I haven't seen it show that before, it usually said 2.4 GHz ** Does anyone have a clue why my clock is so off or if the 1.00GHz issue on system properties for my processor could be the issue?     - Problem reinstalling Wordpad and calculator - keeps uninstalling OE & I accidentally uninstalled Wordpad. When trying to reinstall it via Add/Remove files > Add/Remove Windows Components, I uncheck everything but accesories and then work my way down to Wordpad and Calculator. Check it go back to the root, hit go but find that it uninstalls Outlook Express and Windows Media Player. Reinstall those and Wordpad goes away. I seem to be caught in this endless loop.     - debug slow startup? I got a new XP load for my laptop from our support group and it now takes a long time from the time I enter my password to log into Windows to where the computer is usable. Seems like there is a process in the startup now that may be hanging waiting for something, then timing out, and allowing the startup to go on. Is there a good way to debug this?     - Recreating Default User Profile I was troubleshooting a profile problem on a Windows XP PC and found that the user profile was corrupt. I backed up the necessary desktop files, favourites and quicklaunch icons. Removed the user profile in System Properties and logged back on as the user but it loaded up with someone else's desktop wallpaper and old icons and many other things were just wrong. I logged on as myself and the same happened. I checked Default User profile and saw that all this incorrectness was because it was all in the Default User profile. I really want to just recreate the Default User profile. Is there a proper MS way of doing this. I've searched TechNet and can't really find anything that relates to creating Default User profile from scratch. Any advice would be appreciated and thanks for your time.     - disk drive problem My laptop hard drive had problems with corrupt sectors. Chkdsk found several bad spots on the disk and when it tried to reboot, XP would only come part way up and hang. Same result in safe mode. I got a replacement disk and XP load. Now I'm trying to recover some files from the old drive by putting it in the ultrabay of my Thinkpad. The disk shows up in the Device Manager but nowhere else. I can't see it in the Disk Management utility, under My Computer, from a CMD window using DISKPART, etc. I just want to reformat the drive and move on. Any help on making this drive visible again?     - Ordinal 56 Error Okay, I have read other posts regarding the ordinal 56 not being able to find something in the iertutil.dll. Now, I understand that it is tied to IE7, and that I need to replace the file. I downloaded a copy of iertutil.dll off the net and copied it to my System32 folder. Now I end up with this ordinal 56 error anytime I try to install a new copy of IE7 or any older IE. I also get the same error when I run installs for a number of other programs, or try to run numerous programs that I already have on my PC. What can I do to fix this? Is there a way to recreate the original iertutil.dll file as it should be? I cannot access system restore or last known good. I have tried svc /filerepair (no, this is not really what it was called, but it was something I read that said it restores the faulty system files from the XP Home SP2 disc), and that was to no avail.     - file names are changing case arbitrarily I am using Windows XP SP2. I have noticed that a file saved with lower case letters will be changed to upper case at some point. I first noticed this when using bluebeam PDF software to make PDF's of CAD drawings. They have a batch lits utility that allows you to save a list of the files and reuse this list when you want to print another set of PDF's of the same CAD drawings. The utility, I have found is case sensative and will skip any file that the text case has changed. Does anyone know if this is a windows or software program issue? (diskkeeper limited? no help found at oem site, and could not successfully run a trial version downloaded from oem site) ...hanging upon completion of initial analsys and file compression routine...hang will occure at very begining attempt to move an actual file and never time out or even present with an error. checkdisc run multiple times without reported incident. drive conversion inspired by this problem - recent fat32 conversion to ntfs volume C drive: however this problem presented prior to conversion and had remained after conversion. local - hang when i attempt to use local/system defrag engine - this will occur regardless of drive be it c,d, e, or f drives on my local machine. theory- this has led me to suspect that after recently installing xp sp3 roll up, either or both, local defrag engine, microsoft management console 3.0 version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp.080212-0005 : service pack 3, v.3311) c2007 maybe corrupted or have an MMC 3 inherent performance issue. I am obsessive about cleaning and defrag my HD's so a thoughtful response will be grately appreciated. while my knowledge is limited, i am reasonably proficient with computer jargon so please do not feel a need to dumb anything down for me should you have an interest in helping me to find a solution. thank you all.     - Reinstalling HTTP and HTTP SSL service Hey, I'm running Win XP Pro and having trouble getting the HTTP and HTTPFilter Service up and running. I've tried copying the same registry keys from a similar machine with no success. Both failed to start, something about no handles attached to the device. Need to get this solved without an XP reinstall as alot of my software including MS Office 2005 that all came pre-installed didn't come with the installation disks. The main issues I'm facing are with my audio driver and USB optical mouse that aren't detected on startup, however when i re-plug the mouse PnP picks it up just fine. Kinda getting tried of having to do this after every startup. These problems were all an onset when my system contracted the SROSA virus, since been removed manually, most elements including anti-virus back up and running, with exception to these problem services. Plug and Play service is running fine, as well as the SSDP Discovery Service that I managed to reinstall thanks to someone's custom INF file I obtained online. If someone knows of a %windir%\inf file I could use or any other way I might reinstall the service, I'd be most grateful. Thanks, Saturns. P.S.     - Windows XP freezes on startup Hi, I have recently performed a fresh install of Win XP professional. I did everything perfect from scratch i.e. long NTFS format first prior to installing Windows. After this I installed the following applications: Norton 360, Easy CD Media Creator 10, Mozilla Firefox, Limewire. The PC worked okay for a day or so. But today in the morning I tried to boot it and it froze straight after I logged in. I attempted to boot the PC 3 or 4 times after and it was freezing up prior to the login screen. Eventually I logged in and noticed the following error in event viewer: "The SessionLauncher service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the path specified" I clicked on the link for more information and in the file name it referenced "netevent.dll" and under source it referenced "Service Control Manager" I am totally confused as this is a fresh install.     - unable to locate component error code i have an Acer laptop (XP Home edition) and keep getting an error code (BSOD) C0000135 BASER FAS32 (unable to locate component... was not found). i can't get it to stop rebooting even tho i go to the menu and select to stop automatic reboot, nor can i get it to boot in safe mode of any kind. it won't let me go to last good configuration...nothing. i did, however, get into safe mode last night long enough to run my virus program (AVG) and healed 12 trojans! from what i've read, and i may be wrong, is this an SP2 problem? i don't have an SP2 disk nor access to one.     - Trying to schedule System Restore I recently decided I wanted a more scheduled plan of System Restore Points. I'm not exactly sure why but I have 2 Toshiba laptops and they seem to make Restore Points randomly. I went to Control Panel in XP 2003 and selected Schedule a Task and went through the easy process. I have never used a password on my machine becuase it is usually at home or with me. Therefore I'm not bothered with a password. The task asks for a password so I just pressed <Enter> and <Ok> So when the task started is reported not perforemed becuase of password or account probs. I am the pc administrator. So I did a little web dectective and found there might be and issue with this scheduling and MS had a hotfix. Installed that and still the same thing. Finally I relented and added a real password to my profile and the Restore program comes up at the automatic time scheduled but is static at the opening page where you select "old point" "create a point" , etc. So I thought this would run a System Restore Point without my input??     - User account permissions denied Running XP Home, SP2 on a Packard-Bell machine. I was trying to get contacts & calendar from Palm desktop to a new iPhone via Outlook. Long detail of actions at bottom. End result - the particular user account now gets 'user doesn't have permission for file or folder' errors for *all* programs, the start menu quick-start section is blank. How do I get the permissions sorted out without losing latest Outlook emails (the other files I can manage)? I tried to read the iPhone guide & found pdf files weren't opening. I tried re-installing Acrobat Reader, something happened to interrupt the installation. It wouldn't install without the old version being uninstalled. I ran Remove Programs & ended up with a partially-removed program that wouldn't uninstall because Windows couldn't find one file and I couldn't install a replacement because that could see an existing installation. I went back to a Restore point two days earlier & found Office no longer worked. I ran the CD to repair Office, it said this was okay, I then had further problems so told it to re-install.     - XP Home repair failed to install product catalogs - fatal error An HP pavilion laptop with XP Home was failing to boot. When I tried in Safe Mode it was hanging after loading the MUP.sys files. I tired to repair using the system disc that came with the laptop. Now I get an error "setup failed to install the product catalog" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).     - Drive Drop ?? Thanks to a faulty backup program which was supposed to BACK UP info overnight, apparently has dropped one of my 3 drives. Along with dropping my applications programs, it also took most all of my documents, and vanished. Is there any way I can gain that drive again, and the info with it ?     - Strange windows problem Hi I am getting a strange problem in windows xp but cannot find any solution. When I open a window 1 of 2 things is happening. Using either IE7 or Firefox the graphics and text will suddenly start to zoom up, seemingly infinetly, and nothing seems to stop this. If I go to a windows panel, my computer for example, the list of items appear to physically shake and if I try and scroll down the list of items it will jump back to the top of the list.     - increase resource memory on Windows XP I think there are times when the computer's memory is still not used up, but the Windows resource is running out. In particular, my XP machine has 2GB... sometimes IE or Firefox seem to choke on drawing something on the canvas while there is actually free memory unused by the system. So is there a way to make the Windows resource pool size bigger? Also, for Windows Vista, is there such a need to increase it... I have 4GB of memory there and hope to increase the size there too. to donate to a school. Went to quick format to erase all data files and
installed applications. Recovery started but stopped (several times) at
between 16% and 18% completed, always on a Windows\I386\ file, but never the
same one. The screen flickers and the process stalls. Starting over (F-10)
doesn't help, same result. Rebooting normally gets a DOS message "NTLDR is
missing" CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart, which goes back to the same message. Can't
reboot, can't run recovery. This PC will be usless unless this problem can be
resolved. Any ideas????

Each computer maker uses their own system recovery method - this is not
part of Windows. If the manual that came with your computer doesn't
describe how to do a system recovery you should contact the computer
maker for help.
