Startup is suddenly slow

from the time i would press the power switch on my laptop until i got the
login screen would take roughly 25 seconds. today i imported a couple of cds
to iTunes for windows with the music files stored on an external drive and
now it takes over a minute to get the login screen.

anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

I'm always amazed that, no matter what the symptoms of the problem are,
someone is always ready to shout "infection! spyware! corruption!"

Eli, I haven't encountered this myself, but here's a few suggestions.

First of all, look at the System and Application Event Logs on your laptop
(run Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer) and look for any
errors or warnings that are occuring before you log in. They might give you
a clue.

Second - there are two services on my computer installed by ITunes: the
Apple Mobile Device service and the IPod Service. Disable these services and
see if you still get a delay.

Third, are you booting the laptop with the external drive attached? If not,
check "My Computer." Do you see the drive with a red "X"? If that's the
case, right-click on it and disconnect it.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

How much free disk do you now have? This may not affect the time to boot
but routine maintenance could help system performance.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.
