How often during a user's Windows session are roaming profiles saved. I know
the profile is copied back to the server at log off. Are any files copied to

Erroneous Message: Cannot Copy _ There is not enough free disk spa
I have a possibly damaged 500GB HDD (giving sporadic problems) and purchased
a new 750GB WD drive to remove/archive some files. I have copied some
smaller files, but am now getting a message on the larger files â??Cannot copy
[file name]. There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more filesâ?¦â??
The file that Iâ??m trying to copy is a 7 GB AVI video file and plays fine
from the questionable drive. The questionable 500GB drive has 30GB free
space and the drive that Iâ??m copying to has 702GB free. My Windows C:\ drive
has 16 GB free.
The error message is obviously wrong. Is this a Windows glitch when working
with large files? If so, whatâ??s a workaround. Tag: Start Menu missing All Programs Tag: 227434

click one destop icon another one opens .. why???
When my XP pro SP2 system on an ASUS m6b00n laptop comes out of hibernation,
the desktop icons do not work properly. When an icon on the desktop is
clicked the nearest icon at the bottom of the screen is opened instead. If
the icon is single clicked to highlight it, the improper icon is the one that
lights up instead. It makes no difference what kind of icon it
is..program,folder,etc..The icons in the taskbar at the bottom work properly
and programs launch properly from the startup menu. If you check the
"properties" of the icon the "target" information is correct.
Generally if IE7 is run and the internet is used for awhile, upon closing
IE7 the desktop icons function properly. If the system is restarted instead
of hibernating everything works Ok. The computer has run for years with no
trouble..this just started up..... ideas??

Operation cancelled error
About a month ago, I had left my house to go away with family. My computer
was fine at the time, no viruses or spyware (a hint of lag.), and I had done
nothing to it prior. When I come back 3-4 days later, I could not get into
certain programs like Security Center or Add or Remove Programs because the
same message says " This operation has been cancelled due to
restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system

such). Is there a way to fix this issue? Tag: Start Menu missing All Programs Tag: 227413
WINDOWS WON'T START...
I thought I would bring this to someone's attention before I did something
stupid--again. :(
I'm going to talk with my I.T. supervisor at my school later Monday afternoon.
It started Saturday night... I downloaded a file and scanned it first after
it downloaded it with my anti-virus software. It was in a .rar folder, so
when I saw that there were no errors, I opened the .rar folder and clicked on
the file itself and scanned it again. Nothing. No errors, viruses, or
malware. So I thought, at least.
I opened it and everything seemed fine. Then my FireFox started to receive
errors as did my internet explorer and my anti-virus program. I can't open
FireFox anymore, nor can I open my anti virus software so I can properly scan
my system.
Also, my system (CPU) runs at %100 all the time, according to my task
manager. So when I click on something, it takes forever for it to open up.
Maybe this was stupid of me, but I decided it would be best to start the
computer in safe mode in an attempt to use the anti-virus software.
Now, only the prompt comes up saying that an error has occurred. It gave me
options to start windows normally or to start in safe mode--but no dice. I
won't let me do either now. Or anything else--after 30 seconds, it restarts,
and it does it over again. :/
What in blazes happen? Is there anything I can do?
Now, I can do an non-destructive system recovery, but I'm afraid another
"error" will occur and then I'm really screwed. All my pictures, word files
and videos will go up and smoke--it's happened before. I didn't have a
chance to back-up everything properly either. Which was idiotic and I deeply
regret it.
Should I proceed with the non-destructive system recovery? If it's
successful, I will still have all my files.

They both said it took just a few minutes to download.

Then I tried to download thru Itunes and it said 5 hours!! what might be the

Slow performance immediately after XP boot
I've just very recently started having a problem with my Dell desktop with XP
home edition.
The system boots up fine and launches into windows quickly. However, after
I enter my user profile, certain things I can't seem to do for at least 10
minutes. At first I thought it was just internet connection related because
one of the first things I always do is launch IE. IE will sit for sometimes
over 10 minutes doing nothing until finally the home page will appear (or any
other website for that matter).
However I soon realized it was more than IE... If I try to get into System
Properties immediately after launch and several other system related
activities such as add remove programs, the system does nothing for over 10
minutes.
After this delay period everything seems to work fine.
I've tried running Virus Scan - both Avast (did a bootscan) and AVG (and
originally had PC - cillin running. I've tried removing everything out of
startup (meaning Run in MSConfig/Registry). I've tried removing all mapped
drives and shared folders. Defragged, removed temp files, cleanup disk.
Two things I can think of that I did around the time this started - one was
I attempted to setup a home network. The second was I installed Avast
antivirus. I've since tried removing Avast to no avail, and tried changing
my home network as there seems to be no way to delete/remove a home network.
I'm not really sure I believe any of these are related.

Memory Optimization Problem in Windows XP
Hi:
I am using a free memory optimization software for Windows XP called FReeRam.
I have an advanced option which disables executive paging.
The Virtual Memory set up is system managed.
I have 1GB of RAM memory in my laptop.
I have always the same problem that apparently Windows XP has a lot of
memory leaking problems because the memory optimizer program is automatically
invoked especially when I open several tabs in Windows IE 7 or invoke
openoffice.
My questions are the following:
1) Does Windows XP has normally a lot of memory leaking?
2) Is sufficient 1GB of RAM to have executive paging disabled?
3) Should I increase the RAM to 1.5 or 2GB and Does XP uses optimally memory
above 1GB?
4) Is it recommended to have the VM disabled to increase performance?
5) What is the best Registry set up for memory optimization in Windows XP?
Any recommendations?
Cheers

user defined keyboard shortcut
Is there a way for me to define a new keyboard shortcut under winXP?
There's times when I go through so many key/moustrokes to a certain website

For example: Google has this excellent new translate tool in therr Labs

. I frequently need it when I'm, say, typing a paper in word or an email in

Open Firefox->Google Bookmarks-->Search for the translate tool -> Go to it
and add my phrase.
If I could do a (say) Ctrl+Alt+GG and get there from anywhere , it'd be

HDD thrashing with very long file coping times

workstation disaster recovery - disk imaging?
Hello,
I've been running small networks for enough years to recognize that I spend
too much time wiping hard drives clean and reinstalling their OS. Maybe
it's only every three or four years, but it's an hours long process, what
with all the updates & patches. Now I'm exploring ways to improve this
process. I'm considering disk imaging software (like Acronis True Image and
Norton Ghost), and wondering about XP's System Restore.
Is XP's System Restore reliable, and can I make a restore point after the
initial, clean install, and keep that restore point?
Is that as effective as wiping the hard drive clean, and copying a ghosted
image of that initial clean install?
If I use disk imaging software, do I need to take a complete copy of the
drive, or can I just somehow copy pertinent drivers and operating system
files?
I'm wondering about the space implications, and where this info is stored.
I gather that many new PCs come with a hidden partition which contains some
mysterious recovery utility? But what use is that, if, after a few years,
the hard drive dies? If the hard drive dies, then I suppose an image of
that drive would be useless, unless it's replaced by the exact same model
number?
In a network of 25 workstations, which would be more sensible:
Get enough external harddrive space and disk imaging software, make & store
images of all the workstations, then if something gets
corrupted/infected/otherwise bogged down I can just restore the good image?
Would it be better to use server storage space for this?
Or am I okay relying on XP's System Restore?
So many questions... Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might share!!
