I removed some unused programs (or so I thought) and have realised that I
have deleted something very important as I can now no longer view video's or
view downloaded wmv files. Sound is ok but picture is gone......needless to
say I didn't backup before hand...(don't tell me I'm stupid...I know!!)
Any help will be very gratefully received.

If you simply deleted something, rather than un-installing it, it may be recoverable
from the recycle bin.
Or re-install whatever you did away with. Presumably you know what it was?
Good luck.

I think you removed your Graphics card software driver, try to System
Restore or know the make and model of your Graphics card and go to the
Manufacturer website and download the latest driver for your card Specs.
Say yours is Nvidia for example:
Nvidia Graphic card Check for updated drivers for your graphics
card:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Or Intel:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=77
HTH.

Backing up programs is generally useless, anyway. Programs need to be
reinstalled, and backups wouldn't help you.

How did you remove them? Do you know exactly what you removed?

You don't say what you removed? Could it be Windows Media Player?

Hope this helps.
