    - Error #3041 generated by DAO.Workspace After reinstalling XP MCE with Rollup 2 from the manufacturer's CD, I installed their Driver's and Utilities CD. It installed fine, and I installed drivers. When I later went back to access the CD again, I received this error: "Error #3041 was generated by DAO.Workspace. Cannot open a database created with a previous version of your application. Please reinstall this application from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel." So I uninstalled the CD from the Add/Remove programs list, rebooted and tried to reinstall the CD, but I received the same error. Can you help me clear up this problem so I can access the drivers.     - XP Home Edition+sp1....My PC keeps shutting down/crashing. My pc keeps shutting down after about 1/2 hour of use'with games/watching downloaded videos etc. I have Uniblue Powersuite installed, Registry Booster2/ SpeedUpMyPC and SpyEraser, and it says that everything is a-ok. I have run various anti spy progs,various registry fixers too,but nothing shows up. The pC just crashes,no warning,no advisory window....nothing!!!. I'm at my wits end with this.     - how safe is a BIOS flash? What are my disaster recovery options? I am debating whether to go in for a BIOS upgrade in the hope that my Dell Laptop will finally recognize the new battery that I bought. (I got some suggestions that said so) This needs a BIOS flash, I believe. How safe is this?     - Cannot open more windows - plenty or free RAM! I have a 2GB XPSP2Pro machine with 800MB RAM free but are unable to open new windows. I believe it is because I have many windows and IE7 tabs open at once and something has run out of memory or handles somewhere. Is there anything I can do (besides closing some)? Currently I have 31 windows (SSH, SQL, IE, Outook, CMD, Notepad, EXCEL, WORD,...) of which 4 are IE that hold 20 tabs between them. Mostly doco search results that I want to look at later.     - ddnt service failed to start In the Event Viewer, I always have, at computer start-up, the following: The ddnt service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the device specified. Event ID: 7000 sc query in the Command Prompt gives: TYPE: KERNEL_DRIVER WIN_EXIT_CODE: 20 (0x14) (I cannot find an explanation to code 20.) I have: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ddnt.sys Does anyone know what this service is supposed to do and what "device" is in "The system cannot find the device specified."     - event sounds missing I have tested the sound card and it is fine and passes all tests. I have set up windows XP to make event sounds for "you have mail, USB connected/disconnected, and empty recycle bin. No matter how I configure it and no matter how many times I test it, THOSE EVENT SOUND DO NOT WORK. They did work, but stopped working a month or so ago?     - userenv 1054 I recieve this error numerous times in a windows 2003 mixed domain on all of my XP clients. THere are no errors on any of the DC's. It seems my group policies all run as expected except for logon scripts. If the computer is restarted and logged onto EVERY policy and setting is applied. However the next day, when the user logs on their login script does not run and event 1054 is noted multiple times from throughout the night. At that point I confirm sysvol connectivity and there are no errors with a gpupdate command. I've not tried this as my userenv.log file denoted a fast link at every instance: USERENV(29c.a10) 15:46:35:510 PingComputer: Fast link. Exiting. I've also added the GpNetworkStartTimeoutPolicyValue and tried various settings as described in KB840669 as well as tried disabling Media Sense as noted in kb326152.     - card reader and usb not working after reinstall of xp I recently had to reinstall windows after having problems with my pc. Now my card reader and usb ports do not work. In my disc drives they used to show: d: e: f: now only d: shows, and if i plug my camera in via usb cable it is not detected at all or if i put camera memory card in again this is not detected at all.     - Windows XP Display Performance Problem I'm currently using Windows XP SP2 and recently discovered a display problem. It appears that any relatively dark portions of the screen, such as the blue bar at the top of windows and such, will cause darker shades to go across the entire screen as well. I can still see what is underneath these shaded bars, as it were, but the fact that it darkens the things that it covers is rather annoying. I would like to make it so that these darker portions of the screen will not cause these shaded bars to appear. This developed yesterday after a couple of programs were installed by my family members (Warcraft III, iTunes and iPod software).     - Windows installer runs constantly Hello, Window installer will not cancel or cease to run. I tried to unload the program it is trying to install as well as try to load the window installer utility program but I am prevented from loading or unloading any other software while windows installer is running.     - Disk Drives disappeared after Auto Update After one of the last few updates two disk drives disappeared (G and H). This has happened before and I have been able to get them back by doing a System Restore. I tried it again this time (System Restore can only go back to Dec 29, 2007; nothing available before this date) but still G: and H: have not re-appeared. I tried Microsoft Knowledge Base Article ID 307844 "How to change drive letter assignments in Windows XP" but got to #4 on How to assigne drive letter and "Change Drive Letter and Paths" does not appear (or appears greyed out). I use one of these drives to upload photos off Compact Flash card. Appreciate any help on resolving this. Please keep instructions basic; we're not IT people. Thanks.     - Windows Explorer Application Error I have a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop computer, Windows XP Home with SP-2 and all Microsoft updates installed, 768MB of RAM. No viruses that I know about. I run AVG anti-spyware, AdAware, SpybotS&D, CWShredder, Spyware Doctor, and Zone Alarm (free version). I keep them updated daily or as often as the companies release updates. I scan daily and so far, so good. All this started about a week ago. I'm not sure what is causing all this, but whenever I plug a USB flash drive into either of the two USB ports on the front of my computer, or into the one USB port open on the back of my computer, or if I put a CD or DVD in either of my optical drives, the computer will respond with either of two error messages. Here they are: [first error message] explorer.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x7c910f29" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program OK (button) CANCEL (button) If I click on OK, the error message goes away, I'm back to my desktop, all my desktop icons briefly disappear, then re-appear, and my computer seemingly returns to normal. Except I still cannot use any USB port or optical drive. If I click on CANCEL, I get another error message, which reads this way: Error Signature AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 OffSet: 00011e58 No button appear on this box. I have to use the Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager to box this box, then restart my computer. When the computer restarts, I still cannot use any USB ports or optical drives. I have run the built-in defragger and the error-checker. Both work normally and the error-checker does not report any problems. I thought I may have a bad or failed memory card, so I ran the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp). I ran it overnight and it came back with "no errors". Here is the second error message: Windows Explorer Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. CLOSE (button) When I click there, I get a larger box full of random numbers and letters.     - IE7 Freezes I installed IE7 on my XP SP2 Home Edition machine which has a P4 3Ghz Chip and 1.5Gb Ram. It has recently started to freeze up, causing me to shut it down with task manager. This started with my home page, which now freezes up every time I try to open it up. Other miscellaneous web sites open with no problem, so far. I have read through the numerous articles on MS help web site, but the problem just comes back after I apply the purported cure. If I even try to type in the url of my former home page (www.charter.net), it still freezes. I have flushed the cache and reset all settings. Should I revert back to IE6 on my XP machine?     - file association is correct but icons remain wrong I installed a Quick Time update and accidentally associated all my jpegs with quicktime which I obviously did not want! I changed that back using "open with" "file type associations" etc. so that again "Windows pic and Fax viewer" became my default jpeg opening app. So far so good.     - Internet Explorer will not work after Installing XP2 I have Windows XP Home SP1. I went to microsoft update and installed SP2. When I rebooted, Internet Explorer 6 will not work. I go to Task Manager and notice that Iexplore.exe is showing so I Ended Process and tried Internet Explorer (less plug-ins) and it opened but FROZE and stopped responding. I checked my firewall and it's allowing Internet explorer access. I then installed IE7 in hopes that would work. Same problem. I had a backup of my system so restored the backup and went back to SP1. Tried again the entire process 2 weeks later and still cannot get Internet Explorer to work at all. I have done this process 3 times and nothing will make Internet Explorer work.     - Erroneous Message: Cannot Copy _ There is not enough free disk spa I have a possibly damaged 500GB HDD (giving sporadic problems) and purchased a new 750GB WD drive to remove/archive some files. I have copied some smaller files, but am now getting a message on the larger files â??Cannot copy [file name]. There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more filesâ?¦â?? The file that Iâ??m trying to copy is a 7 GB AVI video file and plays fine from the questionable drive. The questionable 500GB drive has 30GB free space and the drive that Iâ??m copying to has 702GB free. My Windows C:\ drive has 16 GB free. The error message is obviously wrong.     - click one destop icon another one opens .. why??? When my XP pro SP2 system on an ASUS m6b00n laptop comes out of hibernation, the desktop icons do not work properly. When an icon on the desktop is clicked the nearest icon at the bottom of the screen is opened instead. If the icon is single clicked to highlight it, the improper icon is the one that lights up instead. It makes no difference what kind of icon it is..program,folder,etc..The icons in the taskbar at the bottom work properly and programs launch properly from the startup menu. If you check the "properties" of the icon the "target" information is correct. Generally if IE7 is run and the internet is used for awhile, upon closing IE7 the desktop icons function properly. If the system is restarted instead of hibernating everything works Ok.     - Operation cancelled error About a month ago, I had left my house to go away with family. My computer was fine at the time, no viruses or spyware (a hint of lag.), and I had done nothing to it prior. When I come back 3-4 days later, I could not get into certain programs like Security Center or Add or Remove Programs because the same message says " This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administer." I have tried everything I could to solve this, but nothing works (Note: I did absolutely nothing on administration like passwords and the such).     - WINDOWS WON'T START... I thought I would bring this to someone's attention before I did something stupid--again. :( I'm going to talk with my I.T. supervisor at my school later Monday afternoon. It started Saturday night... I downloaded a file and scanned it first after it downloaded it with my anti-virus software. It was in a .rar folder, so when I saw that there were no errors, I opened the .rar folder and clicked on the file itself and scanned it again. Nothing. No errors, viruses, or malware. So I thought, at least. I opened it and everything seemed fine. Then my FireFox started to receive errors as did my internet explorer and my anti-virus program. I can't open FireFox anymore, nor can I open my anti virus software so I can properly scan my system. Also, my system (CPU) runs at %100 all the time, according to my task manager. So when I click on something, it takes forever for it to open up. Maybe this was stupid of me, but I decided it would be best to start the computer in safe mode in an attempt to use the anti-virus software. Now, only the prompt comes up saying that an error has occurred. It gave me options to start windows normally or to start in safe mode--but no dice. I won't let me do either now. Or anything else--after 30 seconds, it restarts, and it does it over again. :/ What in blazes happen? Is there anything I can do? Now, I can do an non-destructive system recovery, but I'm afraid another "error" will occur and then I'm really screwed. All my pictures, word files and videos will go up and smoke--it's happened before. I didn't have a chance to back-up everything properly either. Which was idiotic and I deeply regret it.     - save as - slow response XP Media Centre edition. Running two hard discs In Ms applications such as word, Excel when using 'Save As' the combo' Save in' is slow to respond. This is an inconvenience. Lately my Corel Draw (v 9 ) has developed more than an inconvenience. Save as causes total freeze up if the combo 'Save in' is used [if the directory is left the same it saves fine]. First of all I am not sure what category I am supposed to be on here for this..so I apologize if I am way off base. :) I am trying to download video clips from Oprah.com of Tolle Eckhart.. While trying to watch on the site..the clips kept freezing. vey annoying. So two of my friends said they downloaded the clips and played in Itunes and did not have the freezing up. They both said it took just a few minutes to download. so.. Well what the heck is going on with my computer? I tried to download just regularly and it said 2-3 hours!! I have high speed. Then I tried to download thru Itunes and it said 5 hours!! what might be the reason why I am not getting the quick download.? I would love to know if anybody knows why this is.     - Too Much Memory??? I recently upgraded a Dell Dimension from 512MB ram to 1280MB. We have an older program, (around 2001) Stromberg Time in a Box v2.5, that will not start. I get a message The Computer is Un-Authorized to run this Program. I'm not on support and don't want to pay for it. Sales told me this is too much memory for this program.     - Too many Adminstrative Folders...how do I delete After undating to Service Pak 2, I noticed that I have several Adminstrative folders in my Documents and Settings folder. Adminstartor (2/16/05) Adminstartor, valued-B8142DE8 (2/19/05) Adminstartor, valued-B8142DE8.00 (2/21/05) Folders contained in these files are 2005 and older. There are no current files to be found. I see them everywhere, and my gut feel is that some/most/all of them are
dangerous at best. Would anybody care to recommend a reliable version if,
in fact, these things are really necessary?
