HDD thrashing with very long file coping times
HI all,
whenever i try to copy a file onto my hard drive, the HDD shows
intense activity and the copy times go up exponentially.this happens when
doin copy-paste operation from one folder, on the same drive to another,
copying from a usb drive and copying from the lan network(the transfer speed
from the network is around 1.5 Mpbs, there is no issue with the network
itself but jsut my terminal.)
also when windows is booting there is again intense HDD activity and
it takes around 5 minutes to boot up to the login screen. The same occurs when
i login to windows with my account.
i have tried scanning my notebook for viruses(symantic enppoint
portection with updated definitions), turned off system restore, turned off
indexing service and automatic disk defrag.ive also tried to shut down all
the extra startup programs but the problem remains.Any ideas as to what could
be wrong? Tag: Missing Folder Options Submenu Tag: 227247
workstation disaster recovery - disk imaging?
Hello,
I've been running small networks for enough years to recognize that I spend
too much time wiping hard drives clean and reinstalling their OS. Maybe
it's only every three or four years, but it's an hours long process, what
with all the updates & patches. Now I'm exploring ways to improve this
process. I'm considering disk imaging software (like Acronis True Image and
Norton Ghost), and wondering about XP's System Restore.
Is XP's System Restore reliable, and can I make a restore point after the
initial, clean install, and keep that restore point?
Is that as effective as wiping the hard drive clean, and copying a ghosted
image of that initial clean install?
If I use disk imaging software, do I need to take a complete copy of the
drive, or can I just somehow copy pertinent drivers and operating system
files?
I'm wondering about the space implications, and where this info is stored.
I gather that many new PCs come with a hidden partition which contains some
mysterious recovery utility? But what use is that, if, after a few years,
the hard drive dies? If the hard drive dies, then I suppose an image of
that drive would be useless, unless it's replaced by the exact same model
number?
In a network of 25 workstations, which would be more sensible:
Get enough external harddrive space and disk imaging software, make & store
images of all the workstations, then if something gets
corrupted/infected/otherwise bogged down I can just restore the good image?
Would it be better to use server storage space for this?
Or am I okay relying on XP's System Restore?
So many questions... Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might share!!

Have Service Inherit Environment Variables from Command Prompt Window
Hello everyone.
I am attempting start a service and have it respect environment variable
changes that I have made in the current Command Prompt window's environment.
Basically, I want to do this...
C:\> set FOO=BAR
C:\> net start MYSERVICE

I used Process Explorer to examine the Properties of the MYSERVICE service

Unable to delete read-only folder - access denied
Hi,
I've been trying to remove quite a few (>10) read-only folders & their
subfolders by following the workaround instructions found at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256614, but I'm still unable to remove the
folders.
I created a new registry key UseSystemForSystemFolders and modified the new
value to Type 1 in Registry Editor. Then I tried to use the attrib command
prompt to change the read-only attribute by using attrib -r +s C:\V\Vids. But
it says Access denied.
What else can I do to get rid of these folders? Someone please help me out,
thanks very much in advance!

After using Add/Remove, now system won't boot properly
Someone I know who has a Windows XP Pro desktop computer has AOL
running on it with McAfee Firewall (which is apparently tied in
with the AOL).
Recently, because of some access problem, the McAfee Firewall had been
set to "Allow All". (There are three settings, "Allow All" programs to
access the internet, "Filter" (selectively allow some but not others),
and "Allow None").
Later, it was decided that "Allow All" would be too hazardous and that
it should be set instead to "Filter".
After this was done, it was discovered that no internet access at all
was occurring. When the McAfee Firewall icon was launched, a pop-up
window would say something like "Would you like to turn on the McAfee
firewall service? Yes/No". When "Yes" was clicked, the box would
vanish but reappear about three seconds later. When "Yes" was clicked
again, the box would again vanish only to reappear about three seconds
later. So there was apparently some infinite loop, and the only way to
dismiss the box was to click on "No". But of course, this meant still
no internet access. (The DSL internet line, by the way, was OK. If we
plugged it into an alternate computer, we were able to access the
internet just fine).
Then we had the idea of uninstalling the McAfee Firewall. We went into
the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and specifed uninstall of the
McAfee Firewall as well as a few Windows Live programs. When we
restarted the computer, the bootup process got to the point of
displaying the blank desktop with its textured background and was
about to place the program icons on it but didn't actually get to that
point. It instead just displayed the blank desktop and that was it.
(There was no taskbar at the bottom of the screen and therefore no
Start Menu button). There was a mouse arrow which would move if the
mouse was moved (but there was nothing on the desktop to click on). If
we did Ctrl+Alt+Del, a Task Manager would eventually appear after some
long delay, but when we clicked on "Shut Down", a box came up saying
"Ending EXPLORER" but it didn't complete and we had to click on "End
Task", which left us still on the blank desktop.
We were able to shut off the computer only by pressing the power
button and holding it in for about 10 seconds.
We then tried booting up in Safe Mode with Networking. Similar to
before, the black desktop was displayed with nothing on it except the
"Safe Mode" captions along the edges of the desktop, but no program
icons on it and no taskbar at the bottom of the screen. As before, the
only way to turn off the computer was to press and hold the power
button for about 10 seconds.
I'd normally think of running System Restore, but how would I do that
under these circumstances? If I knew the .exe name and path of System
Restore, I could try to run it from the Task Manager's "New Task
(Run)". Does anyone know the .exe name and path of System Restore?
Does anyone know what else could be done?

XP Backup - All Network Devices/Files Greyed Out
I have been running XP Backup for several years. It has been backing up My

This week I added a new box to the network, went to XP backup to change
folders that were being backed up. Well, much to my surprise backup could

greyed out and you cannot even open them to see the drives, folders, etc.
All of the folders to be backed up are shared and can be seen for the system

Windows XP frozen and safe mode freezes also-have unsaved files! H
Hello! I have Windows XP 2005 Media version and I use AVG for virus
protection. My computer is approx 18 months old and under warranty but I am
not getting any help over the phone and that is all they are offering at this
point.
I have files saved on my computer that I had not backed up and do need to
recover if I at all can. I have a flash drive ready to do that! Trust me
when I say I have learned my lesson and I don't plan to save anything
directly on my computer. I will use CDs and Flash Drives to maintain my
files for when I need them.
My computer was working fine until approx 1 week ago. When I turned
on my computer, it froze (locked) up. I was able at one point during the day
to get the computer to let me open up in safe mode. I performed Check Disk
and it told me that the volume in C was dirty. It proceeded on to check the
rest of the disk. However, when it completes and goes to the log in page and
I clik on my icon, the system freezes up. Now I cannot even open up in safe
mode as it freezes (locks) up in safe mode as well. Today,I called Dell as
my computer is still under warranty, and was told she could help me to do a
system retore and I would lose all of my files, etc. She advised that first
I contact a local repair person to get them to help me to back up my files
and then call her back to complete the system restore. I couln't get any
other info or help and ended the phone call more confused and stressed. I
have many files that I have not backed up on any other source and I know I
should have done so all along.
I have been able to do the F12 and all the tests pass. If I do F8 and go to
prev safe configuration it will bring up the sign in page, but freezes up
when I click on the icon and try to input my password.
What is causing this? Is my drive corrupted? How can I fix this without
losing all my files? I need my computer desparately and need your help even
more.
I opened the computer and cleaned it out. It still freezes up. I am at a
loss and desperately need help!
I am not very computer illiterate when it comes to the this type of technical
part of a computer. I follow directions well and am eager for some help to
get my computer fixed soon!
I hope I have given enough info for someone to be able to help me fix my
computer if at all possible!

Drive sharing/mapping
Hi All,
This is driving me nuts. I got a new machine, call it B. I want to get a
bunch of files off of the old machine, call it A. A only has a C: drive.
I set both machines up with the same user ID and password. Both are members
of WORKGROUP. Both of these machines are at home and are connected to the
same router. A used to be on a domain but I removed it.
I shared the C: drive on A as net share cdrive=c:\. That succeeds. I can
use the share from B as net use g: \\A\cdrive. That also succeeds. Now,
on B, I can dir g:\ and see all of the foldeers on A - but strangely, no
files. If I try a dir g:\afolder, I get access denied.
I've been doing this sort of stuff for years and can't figure our what's
wrong here.

XP performance deteriorating
I've been (or rather my main development workstation has been) suffering
from a constantly degrading performance for about a year now. It's as if
performace decreases with 5 to 10% each month.
I primarily use Visual Studio 2005 on this machine.
I have an additional "backup" VS2005 setup in a VMWare virtual PC on an
external (USB) harddisk as well, where I keep copies of my sources in case
something goes wrong with the "real" machine.
Both setups are XP SP2, both current with updates, etc..
Now the funny thing is, you would expect that on the same hardware, the
"real" instance of Visual Studio would run (at least) slightly better than
the one in the virtual machine.
Exactly the opposite is true here on my system: VStudio runs almost THREE
TIMES faster in the virtual machine than it does directly on the host.
Starting Visual Studio on the host takes 65 seconds (worst case, it's much
faster when it has already been run and all files are still boing cached).
Starting it in the virtual machine takes 20 to 25 seconds, under the same
conditions (actually, the time of 25 seconds was measured immediately after
a "cold boot" of the VM, and of course the VM's virtual harddisk wasn't
being cached in RAM by the real OS because it hadn't been run yet).
The host has a single core 3.2 GHz processor with hyperthreading and 2GB of
RAM, and nothing else is running when VS is started there that isn't also
running when VS is started in the VM.
The virtual machine is configured with 512M of RAM, and runs on the same
hardware for the rest (except it's physically on an external USB disk,
versus internal SATA in the other case). Tag: Missing Folder Options Submenu Tag: 227061
Problem after undoing restoration

XP bad
Windows XP barely runs after installing SP2 and the 72 windows updates that
went along with it. I have been attempting to install SP2 for the last 2
years with the same results. I always assumed it was because of a lack of RAM
(I had 1GB) and lack of disk space (my C drive is at 50% capacity).
When I run a system restore, my computer still lags a little bit, but is
fully functional. After installing SP2 it is mostly unusable.

no apparent difference in performance:

The CPU usage seems to spike a lot, but even when it is barely in use, the
computer hangs or freezes for no apparent reason.
It seems there are a lot of add-ons in my IE7 so I disabled 3 of the 4
toolbars I had loaded.
Performed diskcleanup in both normal and safe modes.

I see that most solutions tend to point to malware, but in my case that just
does not seem to make sense since I can restore to pre-SP2 and everything is
relatively OK. Computer works fine in Safe Mode.
I am a little unclear about when I should change my system restore settings
and how I can delete old ones without wiping all of them out.
Thank you for any help! Tag: Missing Folder Options Submenu Tag: 227046
Looking for Windows backup prog with a catch
I am looking for a backup program for Windows XP that can back up
mapped network drives to a physically attached tape library. There
are some catches:
- it must be able to perform incremental backups - the built-in backup
program can, but it doesn't seem to consider date/time stamp, thus
incremental backups really become fulls
- no special service, agent, or other software to be installed on the
hosts to be mounted and backed up - the backup program must be self-
contained, as is the built-in Win XP backup program.
Thanks for any leads. Tag: Missing Folder Options Submenu Tag: 227045
Win XP requests Activation with no hardware change....Help
Win XP Pro SP2. Retail package. A week ago I had a motherboard fail and
eventually got it all working again
with all new bits. It asked naturally for activation and I did this in a few
seconds over the internet.
The last week has been spent getting everthing sorted and a few hours ago I
disconected my Lan card in the Bios
to check something. On re boot, XP requested activation although the
computer case was not opened.
Now what do I do.......I don't want to activate online and use up my numbers
in case they are needed in the future.

As the subject says, this was the error message I was being shown when my
computer failed to load. I went and brought a new hard drive to help solve
the problem. I installed XP on the new hard drive and updated it and so on, I
then connected the old hard drive as a slave to see if I could retrieve my
files.
The problem I'm having is that I cant open my old user folder, its says
access denied. I think its because I had a password and made my folders
private. Is there any way around this? I really need to retrieve all my old
files and documents.
I had a look on here and searched for "hive file missing" and made it to
this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307545
I followed what it said so that I could use Guided Help on another computer
(my old hard drive). To try and get it up and running again so I could gain
access to my files. I saved everything to a flash drive so that I could use
it in the recovery console. Basically, I've made it as far as running the
"batch regcopy1.txt" file and then restarted the computer. It said to log on
as the administrator and run the Guided Help.exe file. The problem is I cant
log on as the admin, its created a new user called Owner and I cant run
anything.
Can anyone help me out with this? Is it possible to remove the Owner account
so that I can log in with my original one? Or is it possible to gain access
to my old user folder whilst using the hard drive as a slave?

How to make registry edits for environmen vars w/out requiring log
Is there a way, a command line method, to force edits to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Environment to be recognized?
I have a created a .reg file after installing and configuring a WinXP app to
a NAS filer that essentially setups up two environment variables.
My intention is to enable end users to configure their PCs to make use of
that application, with minimal intervention and to do so by allowing them to
setup their environment variables via the .reg file, after a minor copy of
shortcuts to the start menu programs area.
The additional entries within the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Environment are not immediately recognized and seem to require the
end user to either logout or open system properties > advanced tab >
Environment Variables Button> <OK> for the environment to be setup and those
variables recognized. Tag: Missing Folder Options Submenu Tag: 226972
System froze up - Windows XP need help, please!!
Hello! My computer was working fine until yesterday morning.
Is this a virus or what? How can I fix this without losing all my files? I
need my computer desparately and need your help even more. I saw a post from
Gerry in January and am wondering if this is how to fix my computer. If so,
how do I get the computer to stay open long enough to get started.
Do I need to open the computer and see if it needs to be cleaned out? Is it
ppossible that is any part of the problem?
I am not computer illiterate totally but I am when it comes to the technical
part of a computer. I follow directions well and am eager for some help to
get my computer fixed soon!

Repairing XP Media Center Edition with an XP home SP2 disc? Safe?
I have a notebook that came pre-loaded with MCE and that is now starting to
cause me problems (blue screen, various errors, etc.) I had these problems a
few months back and was able to simply do a system restore to solve the
problem, this time however, I cannot restore (all of my system restore points
prior to the middle of last month have disappeared). My dvd-r drive will not
recognize cd or dvd-r media properly (I have avi's saved that it won't pick
up at all), my user accounts except for the administrator account have
disappeared and when I try to remove them they aren't listed. When I try to
re-create them, MCE tells me they already exist. Unfortunately I don't have
the installation disc for this system. I do have a XP home disc that came
with my desktop pc. Can I use this disc to perform a repair for MCE without
any problems for my system?
Also, I was thinking of partitioning my drive and just installing XP Home
because I cannot use MCE with my pro-audio applications. If I do this how do
I select which OS to use and is this safe as well? Tag: Missing Folder Options Submenu Tag: 226967
