file names are changing case arbitrarily
I am using Windows XP SP2. I have noticed that a file saved with lower case
letters will be changed to upper case at some point. I first noticed this
when using bluebeam PDF software to make PDF's of CAD drawings. They have a
batch lits utility that allows you to save a list of the files and reuse this
list when you want to print another set of PDF's of the same CAD drawings.
The utility, I have found is case sensative and will skip any file that the
text case has changed. Does anyone know if this is a windows or software

Check Disc wont complete from "My Computer"
Hello:
I tried running the check disc application from My
Computer--Properties-->Tools-->Error-checking.
It ran slow and only completed 3 of 4 phases of checking.
I got a message from wimdows that Wimdows could not complete the check.
I tried in Safe Mode as well. Didnt complete
Why is that?

live-care- i had only decided to try the live-care defrag engine do to my
local oem defrag engine...
(diskkeeper limited? no help found at oem site, and could not successfully
run a trial version downloaded from oem site)
...hanging upon completion of initial analsys and file compression
routine...hang will occure at very begining attempt to move an actual file
and never time out or even present with an error. checkdisc run multiple
times without reported incident.
drive conversion inspired by this problem - recent fat32 conversion to ntfs
volume C drive: however this problem presented prior to conversion and had
remained after conversion.
local - hang when i attempt to use local/system defrag engine - this will
occur regardless of drive be it c,d, e, or f drives on my local machine.
theory- this has led me to suspect that after recently installing xp sp3
roll up, either or both, local defrag engine, microsoft management console 3.0
version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp.080212-0005 : service pack 3, v.3311)
c2007 maybe corrupted or have an MMC 3 inherent performance issue.
I am obsessive about cleaning and defrag my HD's so a thoughtful response
will be grately appreciated. while my knowledge is limited, i am reasonably
proficient with computer jargon so please do not feel a need to dumb anything
down for me should you have an interest in helping me to find a solution.

I want to do a systemrestore but when I access it I can only get April, it
wont let m go back to March etc.
Also there is only one restore point for today & none others in April.

Reinstalling HTTP and HTTP SSL service
Hey,
I'm running Win XP Pro and having trouble getting the HTTP and HTTPFilter
Service up and running. I've tried copying the same registry keys from a
similar machine with no success. Both failed to start, something about no
handles attached to the device.
Need to get this solved without an XP reinstall as alot of my software
including MS Office 2005 that all came pre-installed didn't come with the
installation disks.
The main issues I'm facing are with my audio driver and USB optical mouse
that aren't detected on startup, however when i re-plug the mouse PnP picks
it up just fine. Kinda getting tried of having to do this after every startup.
These problems were all an onset when my system contracted the SROSA virus,
since been removed manually, most elements including anti-virus back up and
running, with exception to these problem services.
Plug and Play service is running fine, as well as the SSDP Discovery Service
that I managed to reinstall thanks to someone's custom INF file I obtained
online.
If someone knows of a %windir%\inf file I could use or any other way I might
reinstall the service, I'd be most grateful.

Windows XP freezes on startup
Hi,
I have recently performed a fresh install of Win XP professional. I did
everything perfect from scratch i.e. long NTFS format first prior to
installing Windows. After this I installed the following applications:
Norton 360, Easy CD Media Creator 10, Mozilla Firefox, Limewire.
The PC worked okay for a day or so. But today in the morning I tried to
boot it and it froze straight after I logged in. I attempted to boot the PC
3 or 4 times after and it was freezing up prior to the login screen.
Eventually I logged in and noticed the following error in event viewer:
"The SessionLauncher service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified"
I clicked on the link for more information and in the file name it
referenced "netevent.dll" and under source it referenced "Service Control
Manager"
I am totally confused as this is a fresh install.

unable to locate component error code
i have an Acer laptop (XP Home edition) and keep getting an error code (BSOD)
C0000135 BASER FAS32 (unable to locate component... was not found). i can't
get it to stop rebooting even tho i go to the menu and select to stop
automatic reboot, nor can i get it to boot in safe mode of any kind. it won't
let me go to last good configuration...nothing.
i did, however, get into safe mode last night long enough to run my virus
program (AVG) and healed 12 trojans!
from what i've read, and i may be wrong, is this an SP2 problem? i don't
have an SP2 disk nor access to one. ANY suggestions, PLEASE?? i need my

missing graphics
I use ACT! a customer contact software that utilizes MS Sql. After the
program is open for a while I begin to have problems with some windows
openign up with chucks of graphics, layout and characters missing. I start

Trying to schedule System Restore
I recently decided I wanted a more scheduled plan of System Restore Points.
I'm not exactly sure why but I have 2 Toshiba laptops and they seem to make
Restore Points randomly.
I went to Control Panel in XP 2003 and selected Schedule a Task and went
through the easy process. I have never used a password on my machine becuase
it is usually at home or with me. Therefore I'm not bothered with a
password. The task asks for a password so I just pressed <Enter> and <Ok>
So when the task started is reported not perforemed becuase of password or
account probs. I am the pc administrator.
So I did a little web dectective and found there might be and issue with
this scheduling and MS had a hotfix. Installed that and still the same
thing. Finally I relented and added a real password to my profile and the
Restore program comes up at the automatic time scheduled but is static at the
opening page where you select "old point" "create a point" , etc. So I
thought this would run a System Restore Point without my input?? Any helps

User account permissions denied
Running XP Home, SP2 on a Packard-Bell machine. I was trying to get contacts
& calendar from Palm desktop to a new iPhone via Outlook. Long detail of
actions at bottom. End result - the particular user account now gets 'user
doesn't have permission for file or folder' errors for *all* programs, the
start menu quick-start section is blank. How do I get the permissions sorted
out without losing latest Outlook emails (the other files I can manage)?
I tried to read the iPhone guide & found pdf files weren't opening. I tried
re-installing Acrobat Reader, something happened to interrupt the
installation. It wouldn't install without the old version being uninstalled.
I ran Remove Programs & ended up with a partially-removed program that
wouldn't uninstall because Windows couldn't find one file and I couldn't
install a replacement because that could see an existing installation. I went
back to a Restore point two days earlier & found Office no longer worked. I
ran the CD to repair Office, it said this was okay, I then had further
problems so told it to re-install. I then lost access to *all* programs for

I must be deaf
in my profile I said I'm computer illiterat---so I need help. I just got a
new, used computer (2 years old) from a friend. I installed windows
XP(service pak2), 2002 VERSION. I have no sound and when I try to adjust
volume control I get a message----"there is no active mixer devices
available. To install mixer devices, go to control panel, click printers &
other hardware, then click ADD HARDWARE". when I did that I have a printer &

Mouse freezes
Windows XP Pro Sp2
Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse (Intellipoint) Optical Mouse
Anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes after I boot, the mouse freezes. Any
animation running at the time will continue to run but I have no mouse action.
I have followed the instructions in "Help and Support" , uninstalled in Device
Manager, restarted and let it install itself two times but there is no change.
I have to restart when it happens and lose any information I have entered
while word processing.
Can anyone help?

XP Home repair failed to install product catalogs - fatal error
An HP pavilion laptop with XP Home was failing to boot. When I tried in Safe
Mode it was hanging after loading the MUP.sys files. I tired to repair using
the system disc that came with the laptop. Now I get an error "setup failed
to install the product catalog" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
Anyone know how to deal with this? There are a couple of files I really need
to get off this machine.

Drive Drop ??
Thanks to a faulty backup program which was supposed to BACK UP info
overnight, apparently has dropped one of my 3 drives.
Along with dropping my applications programs, it also took most all of my
documents, and vanished.
Is there any way I can gain that drive again, and the info with it ?
I have tried System Restore, and, as always, fails to do anything except
shutting the pc down and powering up and then notifying it can't go back.

Strange windows problem
Hi
I am getting a strange problem in windows xp but cannot find any solution.
When I open a window 1 of 2 things is happening. Using either IE7 or Firefox
the graphics and text will suddenly start to zoom up, seemingly infinetly,
and nothing seems to stop this. If I go to a windows panel, my computer for
example, the list of items appear to physically shake and if I try and scroll
down the list of items it will jump back to the top of the list.
Anybody have anything similar?

If I have a backup done under Vista to an external hard drive, and I have
reverted back to XP PRO, how can I get the restore wizard to recognize the
backup file on the external drive ? Do I need to use another version of

increase resource memory on Windows XP
I think there are times when the computer's memory is still not used
up, but the Windows resource is running out. In particular, my XP
machine has 2GB... sometimes IE or Firefox seem to choke on drawing
something on the canvas while there is actually free memory unused by
the system.
So is there a way to make the Windows resource pool size bigger?
Also, for Windows Vista, is there such a need to increase it... I have
4GB of memory there and hope to increase the size there too. Thanks

Serious Error when using Internet Explorer
Recently, when I try to access a secure database-type website, I get the
"blue screen of death" and then the system automatically restarts. When I log

"Microsoft antispyware has allowed the Windows service McAfee spamkiller

Error when clicking on "My Computer"
I have been using this computer for two years without a problem. Suddenly
two days ago when I double clicked on "My Computer" I received the following

My XP Home has become corrupted over time.
I have updated it from SP1 to SP2...via the Windows Update website.
Now Windows Update is saying that it will support only SP2.
I have a legitimate (legal) WindowsXP, SP1.
If I completely re-install of XP, back to SP1, do I lose all rights to use
the Windows Update Site (since I will be using SP1 again)?

Hi - when i turn the computer on, Windows loads absolutely fine, but when the
desktop comes up it is completely unviewable - just a jumbled mess of colour
& lines - like an old commodor load screen but messier. I don't know if it's
a virus or what, but until desktop comes up, the screens can be viewed fine.
It's so bad, you can't even see where the "start" button is to do anything
at all!
Any one seen this before? Or know what it could be?

Task Manager disabled
I tried to open Task Manager last night, and got an error message that said
TaskMan had been disabled by the administrator. That would be me, and I
disabled nothing. (Also, was going to try a System Restore to see if that
might restore TaskMan, but there were no restore points for April except for
the 18th, which it wouldn't restore to, and I couldn't get the calendar to go
back to March or beyond.)
How can I get Task Manager turned back on? And any ideas on what's up with
my System Restore? Not sure if it's a related problem or just coincidence.

Uninstall external drive
I am in the process of connecting and installing a new external drive. After
it booted up and I was starting the registration (there is no external
software, it has its own built in) I realize I had made an error in the
first part. The pc shows it has been installed.
Is there any way to go back and uninstall it, correct the mistake, and start
all over again.?? There is no packaged install disk, it comes with the
"backup" procedures already installed on the drive.
Also, I have another external drive that I would like to format and start to
wipe clean and using it as empty. How can I reformat it ?, and, once done,
will the pc detect it as "plug and play" ??

Sluggish Performance
I have a Dell with a Pentium 4. Lately 15-20 minutes after start up it
becomes really slow, even typing this now the characters do not appear right
away. I've done virus scans, I use Ashampoo Winoptimizer5 to clean things up,
I've defragged and done everything else I can think of but I'm not a pc
wizard so am looking for some help to figure out what is wrong, any
suggestions?

After moving some files around on my PC and then rebooting, I received the
following message:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\windows\system32\config\system

How to Interpret Memory Performance Measures in Task Manager?
The Windows Task Manager (XP) lists all sorts of metrics on its Performance
tab (e.g., Handles, threads, paged kernel memory, peak commit charge, etc.).
I have really no idea what most of these mean, but I presume they are listed
because they give useful information about the performance of the computer.
Can anyone explain (or refer me to a longer article that explains) in
relatively simple terms exactly what each of these measures mean?
Are any of them helpful in diagnosing whether your computer would benefit
from more RAM? If so, how?
(Please...I'm trying to learn more about how the computer operates. I'm
looking for information beyond "RAM is cheap, go ahead and buy more anyway"

High CPU usage by WMIPRVSE.EXE
I'm running XP Pro w/sp2 My computer will lock up/ run real slow. it
will take over 2 hours to shut down after I request a restart ( has taken
over 1o hurs some times). it will run ok from 15 minutes to 3 hours then will
lock up again. Looking at the task manager the program wmiprvse.exe is
using about 100% of the cpu when the system locks up. i have applied the
hotfix to fix the memory leak problem, still have the real slow problem. Is
there a way to find out which program is running in wmiprvse that is causing
the system to run slow? or a way to remove WMI from my computer?

Not Mapping drives.
we have a logging script that maps servers drives to our Clients Windows XP
professional with service packs2. Some days some clients will not map the
drives for a particular user. Log off and log back in as admin and I am able
to map the drives. I run ipconfig /flushdns
and I able to map the drives as that user.
Using dhcp settings.
Any idea what's causing this problem.

Scheduled tasks and Language settings while logged off
I have added a program to scheduled tasks on a Windows 2003 server
This program connects to a database to perform different tasks.
The task i runs every hour and it works fine when I am logged on to the
computer where the scheduled tasks run, but when I am logged off the program
fails because it uses an other langages settings than when i am loged on. The
scheduled task runs with the same user account as I use to log on. When I am
logged on it uses Swedish language settings and the date format is correct
for the program to work, but when i am logged off and the program starts is
uses something else, maybe English US. How can I change so that the program

Removing Programs In Error
I removed some unused programs (or so I thought) and have realised that I
have deleted something very important as I can now no longer view video's or
view downloaded wmv files. Sound is ok but picture is gone......needless to
