    - Scheduled tasks and Language settings while logged off I have added a program to scheduled tasks on a Windows 2003 server This program connects to a database to perform different tasks. The task i runs every hour and it works fine when I am logged on to the computer where the scheduled tasks run, but when I am logged off the program fails because it uses an other langages settings than when i am loged on. The scheduled task runs with the same user account as I use to log on. When I am logged on it uses Swedish language settings and the date format is correct for the program to work, but when i am logged off and the program starts is uses something else, maybe English US.     - Removing Programs In Error I removed some unused programs (or so I thought) and have realised that I have deleted something very important as I can now no longer view video's or view downloaded wmv files.     - Favorites Add To Menu Order While trying to thwart FAT32 IE7 Add Favorites Menu into displaying in alpha sort-order, I moved Favs folders to another partition then back again. It did re-order the Add Favs Menu to alpha except for one folder which shows at top of Menu. DOS DIR of the copied-to partition shows dirs: [TEMP, 2-45 in alpha, SYNC, TASK, TECH]. Perhaps because of disk space contiguity ? DOS DIR of Favs now shows [TECH, 2-45 alpha, SYNC, TASK, TEMP]. Note the 1st & last file mis-order. Why is an XP-IE7 Menu List dependent on FAT order - or anything but alpha sort and why can't MS fix this??? It is a royal pain to manually scan thru a heirarchy of unordered folders to add Webpage shortcuts!! Can someone please present this in a place most prominently visible to MS designer/debuggers ??     - Com Port Advanced Settings Hello, I have a user that requires changes to the Com Port Advanced Properties (Device Mgr>>Ports>>Com1>>Properties>>Port Settings>>Advanced). The next thing I see is the message "You must have write privileges in the registry for this device in order to modify the devices advanced settings". This is being attempted from an admin-level local user account, so it is unclear where these privileges would originate other than Administrator-level permissions. This appears to be a default setting as it is the same on every one of several PCs I have looked at in researching this up to this point. I have also looked at the registry for any clues, but hate to rummage through there more than necessary. Has anyone had occasion to modify these settings and how did you do it?     - Win XP SP2 long pause after startup I have this problem on 2 PC's at the moment, one laptop and one very modern desktop. I start windows, the logon screen apprears quickly. I select the correct user and windows starts up quickly. When the desktop is visible, I can start Apps like Word immediately and even open recent files from within Word. When I try to open Explorer of Internet Explorer right after startup, I get a blank window for around 2-3 minutes. Then there is some more harddisk activity and the network connections popup in the taskbar and everything is fine again. Any Idea what may be causing this delay? I am using AVG Free antivrus and the systems are fully updated automatically. The desktop has a wire connection to my linksys router, the laptop uses WiFi. All help is more then welcome.     - USB ports not working All four USB ports on my Dell Inspiron 9200 stopped working after the computer crashed for no reason then re-started itself...I've been the distance with Dell who now refuse to do any more until they've tried a re-instal of XP, but I'm having difficulty backing up - obviously!     - typing is slow to appear on screen This happens in WORD, emails, etc., When I type, the words do not appear on the screen immediately. There is like a delayed reaction. I can get several words typed, before they appear. I have contacted Dell and they were no help. I ran a diagnostic on the computer as they told me to, and no errors came up.     - Install / Reinstall / Recovery Console causes shut down having a problem with XP Pro installation... Issue history / attempted resolutions Laptop was/is running fine... XP Pro Boots up, shuts down, all software operates as should. attempted to admin the computer by running a defrag.. defrag runs for a while, then whole computer shuts off, no warning, no blue screen, nothing in the event log.. shut down like power cable is pulled. system reboots fine, no error reporting that windows encountered a serious error etc. run chkdsk /r from command prompt.. no problem. thinking.. hmm problem with the windows file structure maybe !! run sfc /scannow ... runs for a while.. to about 70-80% computer shuts off again.. try booting into recovery console... asks for admin password (???) - computer shuts off again. reboot is fine.. try a repair install.. startup process begins to load.. computer shuts off again Flashed Bios.. run though all the above.. same results. thinking oh well.. just reinstall everything... start the install process.. starts to load the install process.. computer shuts off again.. computer restarts fine, but loosing graphics drivers. let windows find and install drivers.. restart.. computer runs as it was.. back to start... from trouble shooting, it is apparant that the hardware itself is running without issue, if a hardware problem existed it would not allow the OS to run, all programs and functions without issue. it seems that a problem exists somewhere in the windows file structure and that every time something of an admin nature reaches that file (or lost file perhaps) the o/s just shuts off. so at the moment, can't repair install, reinstall, defrag, run sfc /scannow, or enter the recovery console !!     - Backup asking for floppy disk for ACF file I have attempted to back up my hard drive on an external hard drive. I have been performing a full back up. It works fine except at the end it says I will not be able to restore my hard drive because I have no floppy drive for an "ACF" file. I was going to use a USB thumb drive but it was not connected when the "ACF" file warning came up. Is the "ACF" file necessary for restoring a damaged hard drive ? Is there a work around ?     - computer freezes after inactivity I use Windows XP home version with service pak2. I can no longer get up and fold a load of laundry without returning to find that the computer screen is froze. Nothing works, not even ctrl,alt,delete so I have to shut off the computer to reboot. I have used all the maintenance tools that Windows provides and ran McAfee scans and still the problem exists. I have removed all unwanted programs. Now this started after I installed my new SyncMaster220wm monitor that I received at Christmas. I did find an update in Windows Update for this hardware and installed it but that didn't solve the problem either. I had to turn off my energy saving scheme also because there was no response when I touched the mouse. Sometimes it comes on after standby and sometimes not.     - InstallShield Scripting Runtime Error 1607 Greeting, assembled multitudes: My attempts to upgrade my Palm desktop has created a cascade of problems. The most recent is that InstallShield is not running properly on my WinXP desktop. (Possibly as a result of running MSofts windows cleanup utility). When I inserted my CD Installation disk, I got a 1607 Error: "Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime." I had understand that MSoft's article 888019 tellshow to fix this. However: -- The Reinstall the InstallScript engine solution asks me to open the folder: "C:\Program Files\InstallShield\Developer\Redist\Language Independent\i386, and double-click Isscrpt.msi." However, I do not see this folder. The closest I can find under C:\ProgramFiles is "InstallShield Installation Information" folder, but it doesn't have the right subfiles.(I have set to view both hidden and protected files). -- Changing Permissions asks me to check the properties under C: \Windows\Installer. But there is no Security tab, which I am told to look for. Is it right that I need to be in Safe Mode to see this? --I haven't tried to register Idriver and Msiexec, but my experience with the other two solutions doesn't make me hopeful.     - All Windows Popup menus gone Windows XP Home Edition SP2: I have a client whose Windows popup routine(s) are presumably curropted. The main toolbar of every component of MS Office 2003 and the Start -> "All Programs" folder displays only show the popup shadow. That is, one sees the right-side and bottom edges of the popup frame sized for the toolbar item detected, but otherwise the popup is empty. I've never seen this before. Any ideas on how to fix it?     - 16 bit windows subsystem error in XP Hi, When I login to WindowsXP/SP2 as a normal user I get the following message: 16 bit windows subsystem C:\DOCUME~1\Bob\LOCALS~1\Temp\. A temporary file needed for the initialization could not be created or could not be written to. Make sure that the directory path exists, (it does) and disk space is available (it is). Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Close Ignore Regardless of the choice I make, everything is fine after that. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this?     - Removing item in Task Bar Can you advise me how to dispose of an icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the Task Bar? In an effort to do this, I removed the shortcut of the program from my screen, but an icon still persists in appearing at start-up in the Task Bar.     - Slow performance question My IT challenged friend has the same brand computer as mine, but newer and with higher GHz speed, same RAM memory. She doesn't do much with her computer except for e mail, while I have tons of application programs, files etc. on mine, but her machine is so much slower than mine. Everything she does is slower from boot up, to just getting the start menu to open. I have gone through all the steps to speed up her machine, disk clean up, defrag, etc. but nothing seems to help. The only thing I can think of, is that she is running Norton Antivirus and I am running Windows Live One Care and maybe the Norton settings are set to scan more deeply than they need to for normal operations? Also, she keeps getting pop up messages in the lower right hand corner telling her that something is trying to attack her computer, but nothing shows up in scans. Any ideas anyone??     - Task Manager/Processes (for Dummies) I don't have a problem at this time, but would like to better understand the task manager:- On the "Processes" tab of the Task Manager, there is a column headed "CPU", then a column headed "Mem Usage" and last of all, all column headed "GDI Ob". 1. What is "GDI Ob"? 2. I assume the "CPU" figure indicates the amount of cpu usage being used by that particular process, at that exact moment. Therefore, if it shows "0" CPU usage but shows a figure under "Mem Usage" does it mean the process is not running at that exact time, but if it was running, that figure would be the amount of memory required to run it? 3.     - Hybernate My dell laptop does not have the option in control panel/power options to go to stand by or to hibernate. I went to Add/Remove, Windows Components, and made sure that admin tools and maintenace (I think that was the name of it) was installed, which it wasn't so I installed it and thought, great, now I should have it. But it is still not there. The only way I can power down the computer is to turn it off and then do a cold boot when I want to use it again. Because it has an over-heating problem (typical of my particular model dell laptop ;-( , I feel that I have got to turn it off to cool down or else the drives keep spinning and the heat builds up. It has already fried one memory chip, which I did have diagnosed and replaced by a Dell store in my area, so I feel safe that he knew of what he speaks. That is in fact how I found out that overheating is a problem with this model laptop. Does anyone know how I can get the power options I need to handle sleep mode and hibernation?     - Space after restart Hi, I have a insteresting problem on my laptop having XP. If I restart/shutdown once, its shows me around 3GB less space in C drive (4 GB). If I restart/shutdown again, it shows me 3GB plus space (4GB+3GB). So if I restart/shutdown twice in one go it shows me actual space (7GB).     - Boot up Problem I am using a system with Core 2 Duo Processor E 6300, 160 GB Hard Disc, 1 GB DDR2 memory, Windows XP professional and Kaspersky Internet Security 7. I keep my OS upto date with auto updates. Still for the past one week I experience so difficulty. Whenever my system is boot up I see the following message on the screen "Windows cannot find "_________" (in the underlined space five small squares are given with in quotes). Make sure you type the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file click start button and then click Search." If I click Ok the following second message appears " Could not load or run "________ "(five smal squares within quotes) specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry." If I click OK the above said first message against appears. If I click OK again the above said second message appears. On clicking OK it disappears and the system works. But I cannot restore my system to any previous restore point. The system says that such restoration could not be done. No changes made to your computer. What is the solution for this?.     - Unmountable_boot_volume when installing windows xp I have a machine with AMD K7 1500+ CPU 512 MB RAM and a western digital HD of 40 GB on a PCchips 825 motherboard (2003). When I try to reinstall Windows XP on this machine I get a bluescreen stating "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" and the machine stops. The message pops up before I even reach the point where I can run the recovery console. The strange thing is that I succeeded in installing Ubuntu linux on the same harddisk, which I tried to eliminate a defective controller/ harddisk. I also tried another hd with the same result. I'm thinking of buying a thirdparty hd controller, but if it would be possible to prevent the cost I would appreciate the help. Does anyone have a clue what I could do to solve the problem?     - Page File Size & Location The Question: What size should I make for my page file, and where should the page file be located? The Details: I am installing a new 100GB, 7200RPM Hitachi hard drive in a Toshiba laptop. I'll be using the Toshiba Recovery DVD, and then installing all the Microsoft updates using a high-speed broadband connection. The computer has 2GB of SDRAM already installed and tested satisfactory. I have also updated the BIOS to the most recent available from the Toshiba web site. The Background: From various web sites, it seems my page file should be 1.5 to 3.0 times the total amount of RAM. 1.5 plus 3.0 equals 4.5 and 4.5 times 20000 (MB of RAM) equals 90000MB, or 9GB for the page file. Can anyone confirm this? Also, the laptop only has room for one hard drive. It seems smart to put the page file on another partition, but is this safe to do, or will doing that slow down the computer? we have a logging script that maps servers drives to our Clients Windows XP
professional with service packs2. Some days some clients will not map the
drives for a particular user. Log off and log back in as admin and I am able
to map the drives. I run ipconfig /flushdns
and I able to map the drives as that user.
Using dhcp settings.

Any idea what's causing this problem.
I will appreciate your answer.
