    - Error-Check Tool I recently aquired a computer that needed a little cleaning. To free up some of the memory I ran the disk clean up tool...then I deleted some unwanted programs...then I ran the defrag tool and up to that point everything seemed to be working "Okay." When I ran the error-check tool it found some errors. After running it again and asking it to fix the errors it deleted something like four indexes (not sure of numbers at the moment, will need to look at log if necessary). Anyway, System will not start up normally anymore, I get an unexpected shut down and it takes me the prompt to start in Safe Mode etc. It will only start in Safe Mode and System Restore has no effect?     - CHKDSK errors - I'm confused! Hi Folks, I have run chkdsk several times over the last 24 hours using no switch and /f and /r switches. Each time, errors are found, which are then corrected by using the appropriate switch. All the errors I have seen are index-related. I don't appear to have any bad sectors. An error that has cropped up on more than one occasion is "Deleting an index entry from index $0 of file 25". On the same run, I got "Detected minor inconsistencies on the drive. This is not a corruption". To my surprise, these errors were flagged up when doing a read-only chkdsk. If it's read-only, why does it proceed to delete index entries? The first time I ran chkdsk and saw errors, I thought it was a one-off. But, having corrected the errors and run chkdsk again in read-only mode, again there were errors.     - XP SP3: File Read operation is extremely slow Laptop Compaq nc6220, 512MB mem., 60GB hdd NTFS formatted, Windows XP SP3 I'm tired looking for solution... please help me somebody! When I copy any file from hdd to usb, network or to the same hdd another folder the transfer rate is about 200kbp/s!!! For 100MB file it takes hours. But write operation is ok - about 15-20 Mbp/s. So first I replaced hdd with a new one - no help. Then I deleted IDE controller from Device Manager and reboot twice - no help. I stopped unnecessary services and unload antivirus - no help. I setup 3rd party cache manager software - no help. I reinstalled Windows from scratch. Problem disappeared and...... appeared again after two weeks! HELP ME!     - "Memory Transfer" I Partitioned my hard drive into "G" Operating system=6 GB, "C" Programs=20.9 GB, "D" Data=11.4GB. Me being a numpty thought that the operating system would not need more than 6GB to operate? It now tells me after a year of use that the system is short of memory! I've deleted Folders such as $NtUninstallKB42773$ etc, but still no joy. Is there any way I can allocate more memory to the "G" partition from the "D" or "C" partition?     - Defrag stopped working after Steadystate install I had the a problem (windows hanging at restart after enabling disk protection) with Steady State. Then I stopped (power off) and started the system. From then on I cannot get the windows Defragmenter to work. I uninstalled SS, but the same problem persists. I think since I stopped and started the machine I am not able to fully uninstall SS. Is there anyway to 1. Uninstall SS fully 2. Get Defragmentor to work I also tried to install SS again and then uninstalled it. Still the problem with deframent is not solved. Please help!!! I am using windows XP pro.     - Windows XP: FilesNotToBackup and KeysNotToRestore Hi, I have a specific need to not have System Restore restore certain registry keys and files. I find that FilesNotToBackup (and therefore restore) is honored, but the registry keys mentioned in KeysNotToRestore get changed. I have been specifying the keys in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore. Is this the right place? I noticed in one of the web pages from the System Restore program manager, theres a reference to CurrentControlSet001. I thought it to be a typo. Am I wrong?     - Annoying file and web access delays after replacing file server Hi, I replaced my old file server (Windows 2000 Pro Desktop!) by a SBS2003 R2. I moved all data to the new SBS2003 server and created identical shares, removed shares from old Win2K file serer and turned it off. Now, on a WinXP Pro desktop when starting Windows Explorer or IE6, I get annoying delays. The network tray icon reveils a delay of several seconds before network traffic takes place. Then files / sites show up quickly rightafter. When the old file server is powered up (still connected to network), the delays are gone. I suspect the WinXP desktop still uses links to the old file server but have no clue where to look. Q1. What can I do to get rid of these delays ? Q2. I get this message mainly when I am on a site and clink on a link within the site. My overall browsing experience has been slower recently. My habits: Ran Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool today--no infections found. Run Disk clean up once a week. Defragment once a week. Run Avast Anti-virus at least once a week. Automatic Updates on. Run "check for updates" manually on occasion. Use Windows firewall. Pop-up blocker on. Phishing filter on. Do not game. Occasionaly view video, webcasts, and other media. Recent Downloads: Haute Secure--in beta stage. Questions: 1. What could be causing page display errors? Suggestions? 2. Should I update to SP3 if system was up-to-date prior to its release? 3. Please recommend plain English reading material on how to optimize processes running in background and at start-up. Clueless, but think this area may be causing my slower performance issue. 4. Driver updates? Unfortunately, I got into a nasty discussion in the Dell forum and would like to know your opinion on updating drivers if they are not broken, even if urgent updates are recommended. 5. How do I know if I have an external router? Is this something I would/could have ordered with my original purchase? I apologize if I have asked too many questions or violated posting protocol.     - Slow boot after reinstall I had to do a fresh install of XP Pro. I've added SP 2 & 3. There is a 27 sec delay between the bios info screens, and the XP splash screen. My other boxes are about 5 seconds. Googling got me a hint to check the boot order, and it's HD, CD then floppy. Most of the stuff I found applied to a delay after Windows starts. Any suggestions?     - Achieving a FAT32/NTFS partition? Hello A friend of mine has a Win XP laptop and recently bought an external hard-drive which is Windows and Apple compatible. He wants to store Apple compatible music files on the external drive and to be able to listen to those files on his laptop. The laptop does not appear to 'see' the external hard drive, so he was advised to format the laptop hard drive so that while he has Win XP in a NTFS-formatted partition, he ought to have FAT32 for his Apple files/external drive on another. Whether this initial advice was correct or not I am unsure, but it seems a lot of trouble just to listen to Amy Whitehouse. However, if I go to Computer Management and then Disk Management to do this, it does not offer an option - only NTFS is available from the one-item drop down menu. I am not sure if he has tried to format the hard drive previously and that this has made NTFS the only item available in the drop down menu. Is there anything he can do to resolve his problem?     - User Profile Folder Found but Profile Not shown in System Properti There's a user profile folder - Documents and Settings > UserName > Application Data etc etc, the whole 100 yards. This profile belongs to a user who no longer works for us. His profile is about 6GB in size. I want to get remove his profile from this system. But I can't see his profile listed under System Properties > User Profiles. Even DELPROF.EXE did not find it. What is the best way in this case to remove this unused profile?     - Windows XP performance issue I have a Dell 5150 box that used to have Windows 2000 on it. I recently upgraded to Windows XP and noticed that downloading files from our server is extremly slow. a 2MB file takes about 5 minutes to download to the computer. However, if we upload the 2MB file to the server, it works great. What could be going wrong. When the computer was Windows 2000 we had no speed problems. As soon as we switched the OS, it's very slow. I tried changing the speed and duplex settings on the computer and switch but no combination worked. I even replace the network card and nothing.     - SYSTEMINFO command Hi, I am trying to export system info using Systeminfo command but i am facing some issues .I tried creating CSV with C:\>SYSTEMINFO /FO CSV >>c:/sysinfo.csv command , but its not formatted so very difficult to see all data.     - %temp% I had a previous post on this subject, but perhaps didn't explain the problem correctly because I didn't get any comments that helped solve the problem. For some reason, even though the file is there where it is supposed to be, the command %temp% doesn't work. When I try to install a program that uses that command th einstallation fails. So the question I now have is what does the symbol % mean. Where is the path for %temp% stored and how to I correct that path so that %temp% works correctly? Other % commands seem to function properly. I am running WindowsXP home edition with SP3. Celeron 2.8GHz and 1.5MB RAM. I have an 80GB hard drive with 44GB available.     - Optimal stripe size of RAID 0 to install OS on? I've done research on this for two days, and all of my questions are cleared except this last one. My post isn't a question that requires someone to explain everything from beginning. :) A couple simple conclusions: 1. small stripe size for random access (OS, applications), large stripe size for data (large files, storage). 2. you would get optimal performance if stripe size = cluster size, or (# of drive * stripe size) = cluster size My question is, the default cluster size for Windows OS is 4k and I believe it stays like that since Win 2000 to now for a reason, the MS engineers must have determined this is the best way. OK then let me assume I don't change that, although a lot of ppl suggest changing it to 16k. Why had I never seen anyone suggesting 4k as stripe size? From all I've read, it's either 16k or 32k. If the concept of "stripe size = cluster size" is correct, wouldn't it be optimal to set 4k strip on a disk that is formatted by Windows installation CD, which cluster is 4k? If 4k option is available on the RAID controller (ICH9R), is there any reason I don't do 4k? Is there any ownside to do 4K?     - After Windows Update Laptop Keeps Accessing Disk and Fan Kicks In Hi I did a check through previous post and a few people seem to have had similar problems without specific details, so im going in for as much detail as I have. I have a relatively new laptop (Nov 2007, not used much as migrated from old machine which i hung onto). The machine hasnt got filled with dust, and till the exact time of the automatic update was behaving fine. Yesterday I used Windows/Microsoft updates to apply the latest updates, i only got 7 of them including office updates. The scan for updates took a long time, 2 minutes nearly, with the CPU at 100%. I hadnt had this the last time i ran it. Anyway after it finished and i applied the updates i noticed the fan kicking in a lot more even when no CPU activity was visible using Task Mananger. Anyway I checked for restore points and noted one for Software Distribution Service 3, which i thought was odd as this came out some while back from what i remember so why would it only now decide to install it. My old laptop (which was about 3 years old at the time) had a similar issue with Automatic updates, taking several hours to complete a scan one time after which it had a similar problem. So I tried going back to a restore point from the morning which finished, but the machine still behaves the same. Having been using it for a day now i can tell that the fan kicks in into high RPM without any jump in CPU usage. If there is significant CPU usage it iwll kick in but take a long time to finish up. I noticed that the IO Read Bytes for CSRSS.EXE keeps going up now, and my machine keeps accessing the disk every second or so in a constant pulsing noise. On my old laptop I had similar issues. As I had restore points i went and did what i tried on my old machine, looking at the registry for any odd changes. I compared two from previous days 16th 13th May and nothing significant. When i compared the system hive for 16th vs 20th (snapshot from today) i found that the [HKEY_USERS\myuser\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Power] key had the ACPolicy and DCPolicy values changed, several bytes of the hex values in both cases. I cannot explain these changes as I havent explicitly made any changes myself. So im now left with a laptop where the fan is making more noise than normal like its idling at a higher RPM all the time, with sporadic burst for no apparent reason. I'm hoping someone else might have come across similar issues, as i believe its something to do with an update/patch then effecting part of the OS.     - Removing Uninstall files I've just upgraded my OEM version of XP Home SP2 to SP3 using a downloaded ISO image of SP3 on CD which all went smoothly. My C:\ partition (about 12GB) which has just the OS on it, is now down to 350-450MB of free space and I am wondering about removing some of the uninstall files in the Windows folder. At the moment there is not enough free space for disk defrag to work properly. The alternative is to increase the partition size which I can do with BootItNG - although I'd like to try the safer alternative first. Given that XP3 rolls up most of the previous KB... updates, what can I safely delete of the uninstall files? (I'm also planning to create a slipstreamed XP SP3 CD and would appreciate a link for the method to do that please, if possible) - I have an XP SP2 installation disk, and the downloaded ISO image of SP3 on CD too.     - Incorrect volume size on C: drive Hi there I have an IBM notebook with Win XP SP2. When I check the properties on my C: drive it says there is about 2 gig left of the 80. This canâ??t be as there is not that many movies/ music/ apps on the machine. I downloaded an app called â??visdirâ?? & scanned my computer & according to it I have over 30 gig free which sounds about right.     - Processes & their memory on task manager Hi there I am using Win XP Pro with SP3. 2.8 Dual core machine with 2 gig ram. I notice sometimes that my machine runs slower than normal & when I check on task manager the amount of memory next to the processes (I added them) does not add up to the amount of actual memory being used under performance. A couple weeks ago the Device Manager was able to list all my hardware. I
went to it today and the window is blank. System seems to be running fine
with no unusual problems.

Is there some other function that is off for some reason. What do I have to
do to get back a list of my hardware devices on my system?

Thier is a hotfix for that:kb893249 Otherwise,open cmd,type:Sfc /Scannow

Did you install SP3?
Device Manager and Network Connections may be blank after you install Windows XP Service
