    - Page File Size & Location The Question: What size should I make for my page file, and where should the page file be located? The Details: I am installing a new 100GB, 7200RPM Hitachi hard drive in a Toshiba laptop. I'll be using the Toshiba Recovery DVD, and then installing all the Microsoft updates using a high-speed broadband connection. The computer has 2GB of SDRAM already installed and tested satisfactory. I have also updated the BIOS to the most recent available from the Toshiba web site. The Background: From various web sites, it seems my page file should be 1.5 to 3.0 times the total amount of RAM. 1.5 plus 3.0 equals 4.5 and 4.5 times 20000 (MB of RAM) equals 90000MB, or 9GB for the page file. Can anyone confirm this? Also, the laptop only has room for one hard drive. It seems smart to put the page file on another partition, but is this safe to do, or will doing that slow down the computer?     - when deleting a large FILE I get a messege, "The FOLDER is... When I'm deleting something that's too large for the recycle bin, I get the message asking to confirm to permanently delete it instead of sending it to the recycle bin, the curious thing is though, that even if it's a file I'm deleting the message always reads, "The folder '...' is too big for the recycle bin....", It doesn't really matter but I was wondering if this is normal or not?     - HP 9130 OJ Printer causes slow access to 'My Computer' There is a delay in opening 'My Computer' (and save as 'browser' - I don't know the name for these interactive windows). It is a t60 laptop running xp+sp2. It happens after installing an HP OfficeJet 9130. I have unistalled and installed in several different ways (options), but the trouble persists. I just re-confirmed that the problem is caused by the presence of the 9130 by unistalling it again, and checking. I have read several suggestions about why slow access to My Computer occurs. I don't have any drives connected. The 9130 is the only real printer I have attached. (Adobe PDF and MS Office Doc. Writer are listed as well.) I use the scanner on this computer. The WIA service is 'automatic', but was not running when I checked once when the 'My Computer' issue existed. BTW: I have a second t60/xp+sp2 computer that is set up to use the same printer/scanner. When doing so, the previous local user profile is not accessed, as joining the domain creates a new profile under documents & settings.     - optimum partion size Hi Dear I have a question about Windows XP (SP1 or SP2): What is optimum partition size for drive c in windows (particularly in Large Hard disk ex.160 GB) I believe that because of using virtual memory (paging) in drive c, we can configure it to large size (for example 20 Gb in 160 GB total) but my friend thinks that if we configure Drive c to large size it will be slowly and system performance will be down (because of search & fragment) and he believes that we should use smallest size for partition of drive c (for example 4GB).     - Screen Freezes CPU Overheating? Im struggling to determine a problem of mine. Recently I recieved fatal CPU temprature message in my BIOS when my system was starting thought nothing of it switched my machine off and came back to find i working alright. However a few weeks down the line now I am finding m system is freezing or so it seems. My screen will freeze the curren picture, sound will stop. Therefor I can still see the state of th crash. However outbound MSN connections remain intact and my CD driv still opens and closes. To this I think it could be an overheatin problem. Checking my cpu temp running P4 Intel 3.21Ghz im on 57*C and usin 0.07% CPU usage. My case is open, well venitlated and I have vacumen my case clean, removed my heatsink and and dust. Could it simply be a problem of a lack of thermal paste, OR could it b a graphics card problem. I cannot determine! Any help is apriciated!     - XP Pro with 4GHz DDR3 fails to boot at Mup.sys XP runs fine with 2 Gig of DDR3 mem installed. MoBo is DX38BT, cpu is Cr2D E8400 3GHz. When i add 2nd set of CD3X1024-1800C7D mem sticks for a total of 4 gig system bios sees it, but XP hangs on boot up at: "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\Mup.sys" boot up hangs at this line and will not proceed. Boot up into Safe Mode will work but system will hang if trying to boot up normal at that line listed above. Any suggestions or answers as to why system will not boot to normal mode with the 4 gig of DDR3 mem installed. Nothing else seems to be affected - even Windows Explorer loads immediately, but each time I try to open My Computer it hangs.     - Error #3041 generated by DAO.Workspace After reinstalling XP MCE with Rollup 2 from the manufacturer's CD, I installed their Driver's and Utilities CD. It installed fine, and I installed drivers. When I later went back to access the CD again, I received this error: "Error #3041 was generated by DAO.Workspace. Cannot open a database created with a previous version of your application. Please reinstall this application from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel." So I uninstalled the CD from the Add/Remove programs list, rebooted and tried to reinstall the CD, but I received the same error. Can you help me clear up this problem so I can access the drivers. I am debating whether to go in for a BIOS upgrade in the hope that my Dell Laptop will finally recognize the new battery that I bought.     - event sounds missing I have tested the sound card and it is fine and passes all tests.     - userenv 1054 I recieve this error numerous times in a windows 2003 mixed domain on all of my XP clients. THere are no errors on any of the DC's. It seems my group policies all run as expected except for logon scripts. If the computer is restarted and logged onto EVERY policy and setting is applied. However the next day, when the user logs on their login script does not run and event 1054 is noted multiple times from throughout the night. At that point I confirm sysvol connectivity and there are no errors with a gpupdate command. I've not tried this as my userenv.log file denoted a fast link at every instance: USERENV(29c.a10) 15:46:35:510 PingComputer: Fast link. Exiting. I've also added the GpNetworkStartTimeoutPolicyValue and tried various settings as described in KB840669 as well as tried disabling Media Sense as noted in kb326152.     - Windows XP Display Performance Problem I'm currently using Windows XP SP2 and recently discovered a display problem. It appears that any relatively dark portions of the screen, such as the blue bar at the top of windows and such, will cause darker shades to go across the entire screen as well. I can still see what is underneath these shaded bars, as it were, but the fact that it darkens the things that it covers is rather annoying. I would like to make it so that these darker portions of the screen will not cause these shaded bars to appear. This developed yesterday after a couple of programs were installed by my family members (Warcraft III, iTunes and iPod software).     - Disk Drives disappeared after Auto Update After one of the last few updates two disk drives disappeared (G and H). This has happened before and I have been able to get them back by doing a System Restore. I tried it again this time (System Restore can only go back to Dec 29, 2007; nothing available before this date) but still G: and H: have not re-appeared. I tried Microsoft Knowledge Base Article ID 307844 "How to change drive letter assignments in Windows XP" but got to #4 on How to assigne drive letter and "Change Drive Letter and Paths" does not appear (or appears greyed out). I use one of these drives to upload photos off Compact Flash card. Appreciate any help on resolving this. Please keep instructions basic; we're not IT people. Thanks.     - Windows Explorer Application Error I have a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop computer, Windows XP Home with SP-2 and all Microsoft updates installed, 768MB of RAM. No viruses that I know about. I run AVG anti-spyware, AdAware, SpybotS&D, CWShredder, Spyware Doctor, and Zone Alarm (free version). I keep them updated daily or as often as the companies release updates. I scan daily and so far, so good. All this started about a week ago. I'm not sure what is causing all this, but whenever I plug a USB flash drive into either of the two USB ports on the front of my computer, or into the one USB port open on the back of my computer, or if I put a CD or DVD in either of my optical drives, the computer will respond with either of two error messages. Here they are: [first error message] explorer.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x7c910f29" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program OK (button) CANCEL (button) If I click on OK, the error message goes away, I'm back to my desktop, all my desktop icons briefly disappear, then re-appear, and my computer seemingly returns to normal. Except I still cannot use any USB port or optical drive. If I click on CANCEL, I get another error message, which reads this way: Error Signature AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 OffSet: 00011e58 No button appear on this box. I have to use the Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager to box this box, then restart my computer. When the computer restarts, I still cannot use any USB ports or optical drives. I have run the built-in defragger and the error-checker. Both work normally and the error-checker does not report any problems. I thought I may have a bad or failed memory card, so I ran the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp). I ran it overnight and it came back with "no errors". Here is the second error message: Windows Explorer Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.     - IE7 Freezes I installed IE7 on my XP SP2 Home Edition machine which has a P4 3Ghz Chip and 1.5Gb Ram. It has recently started to freeze up, causing me to shut it down with task manager. This started with my home page, which now freezes up every time I try to open it up. Other miscellaneous web sites open with no problem, so far. I have read through the numerous articles on MS help web site, but the problem just comes back after I apply the purported cure. If I even try to type in the url of my former home page (www.charter.net), it still freezes. I have flushed the cache and reset all settings. Should I revert back to IE6 on my XP machine? My computer won't boot at all. I get the message "Windows could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Can anyone help?

You need to boot with Windows XP CD, then instead reinstall just using
option R to repair windows XP in your HD.
