My computer won't boot at all. I get the message "Windows could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Can anyone help?

You need to boot with Windows XP CD, then instead reinstall just using
option R to repair windows XP in your HD.
