    - No Updates Available After Installing SP3 After a fresh XP Pro install, I immediately installed SP3, then went to look for updates released after I downloaded SP3 (Which was a few months ago), But everytime I run Windows Update, it tell's me there is no updates available...?     - SVChost.exe 99% CPU Usage with SP3 installed Hello, I recently installed SP3 on my laptop and desktop PC's running Windows XP Home SP2. Everything was fine for about a week, but last night, both PC's slowed till a standstill and became unusable. The show an instance of SVCHost.exe using 99% of the CPU. I used Process Explorer to narrow the problem down to the Automatic Update service. Stop it and SVCHost.exe goes to 0% usage and System Idle jumps back to 99%. I left the PC on today for 12 hours to see if it was actually downloading something and might "fix" itself. After 12 hours, it was still using 99% for svchost. No network activity light and no hard drive usage; just running the PC full bore. I knew this was a problem that happened to some people a year ago, and there was a fix. However, wasn't SP3 supposed to have all those fixes. Why did this start happenening on two different PC's at exactly the same time,, with both having SP3 installed. Also SP3 was installed from disc, not download and installed with no errors on either machine. Can anyone help me with a solution that will allow me to use automatic updates, and not have svchost.exe use 99% of my CPU.     - MSCONFIG Window - Entry removal I have more and more executables that I have unchecked to disable them building up in the window that opens when you run MSCONFIG. Can someone please tell me how to remove the lines I do not want to appear there? I suspect that it is in the registery somewhere but I have searched and can only find the "run" commands and deleting them does not remove them from the msconfig window.     - problems with %temp% This question actually started because I found I could not install paint.net 3.31. The installer would create a file folder in D&S\HP Owner\local settings\temp and then flash and quit with no crash file created. Anyway, from a forum on paint.net I was asked to check my temp files by using the command %temp%. When I do that I get the message 'windows cannot find 'C:\Documents... When I manually look for the folder through my computer the temp file is where it should be. It seems that the two situations may be related. I'm sorry to get verbose on this, but I am trying to be clear about my problem. BTW, when I use other %*% commands, such as systemroot they work. I am running WindowsXP home edition with SP3. Celeron 2.8GHz and 1.5MB RAM. I have an 80GB hard drive with 44GB available. The paint.net forum seemed to think my windows installation was corrupted, but everything else works fine, with the single exception of Nexus radio which does install, but crashes every time I attempt to use it. One other note, again on advice from the paint.net forum I have uninstalled qand reinstalled all of my net frameworks from 1.1 through 3.5.     - BSOD recovery One of my machines came up this morning with a BSOD. The message is: "The registry cannot load the hive(file): \SystemRoot\System32\config\Software or its log or alternate" It is corrupted, absent, or not writable." Then it does a dump of physical memory to the disk. Re-booting into safe mode gives the same result, as does returning to the last known good configuration. How can I recover from this?     - 719 fragments in 2.10GB file After defragging my Windows XP PC the report shows 719 fragments in a 2.10GB file - it appears to my Outlook 2007 pst file. I've been having some crashing issues with IE7 lately (hence the defrag) - could all these fragments in Outlook be the issue? I don't recall ever seeing these fragments before. I checked an old defrag report that I had saved from 2/10/2007 and there was only the 2 fragments in the 113KB file. I am concerned about the size of the fragments (over 2GB) and not sure if there's anything I should/could do about them.     - Deferred Process Calls About 2 days ago I noticed my laptop slowing to a crawl. AFter checking CPU on task manager I came to the boards and from another related thread downloaded Process Explorer. Whike there have been occasional brief breaks, PE tells me that DPC's are taking up about 65-70% of my CPU for hours on end. I am a pretty good user, but not technical enough to follwo what I read. Most of what I can find says that something like this is likley a driver issue. There is nothing in the device manager that shows anything amiss and I cannot find anything in Process Exploere to help me understand how to find what the device is that is hogging the resource. Something in the help files suggested enableing the context swtiches which runs a continually larger number- in the millions but provides no insight. How do I find out what is causing this, short of uninstalling and reinstalling every component on the system? IBM Tablet X61/ XP SP2 current with updates/ 2 Gig memory/ Core DUO L7500 1.g ghz.     - SP3 - Failure to install I have 3 PCs and a laptop all running XP (Home, Pro and Media). Last week I downloaded SP3, and installed it successfully on the 3 PCs - but installation on the laptop failed on each of three attempts. On the PCs I simply ran the downloaded file, "WindowsXP-kb936929 SP3-x86-enu.exe", and the install proceeded without a hitch. On the laptop the installation almost completed, then failed with the following popup "Service Pack 3 Setup...." "Access is Denied". SP3 then uninstalled and, following a reboot, the laptop seemed to be working as before. For subsequent attempts I closed all running programs and non-essential processes manually and using "End It All", but the result was the same. The laptop is an Asus F3J (Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 with 1GB memory & 120GB HDD) running XP Media Centre. I am the Administrator and only user. I am not using a password on start-up.     - Chkdsk /f I am running XP home addition. For some reason I have file errors and am unable to run Chkdsk /f on my computer. I get the following message when I try to run it... " Chkdsk /f cann't run because the volume is in use by another process". I do see that when I run Chkdsk I get a report that there were errors found, that they were fixed but never find that the system is fixed. This is the basic information that I have. if you need more to help me fix this I would be greatfull. Also without this fixed I can not defrag my system. That is what got this all started.     - Explorer issues On boot up, after logging on to a user account, it takes approximately an hour before (a) windows explorer will show more than My Documents (any attempt to browse to other directories is met with a search light and nothing more (b) I cannot use Internet Explorer to go to any sites (firefox works just fine) (c) this computer, which is the printer server, will not allow any printing, (d) I can't use any control panel applets, nor in MMC, expand any of the items in there.     - XP Professional not showing all account types Dell Latitude laptop running XP Professional. I went in to create a PowerUser account for safer net surfing, and discovered that Windows on this machine only knows 2-account types: Limited and Administrator (just like the Home Edition).     - Windows Update ALWAYS thinks it has updates when it doesn't !! Windows Update going in circles. After installing ALL the recommended Windows Update, I go to shut down and it says there are updates to be installed... I click it and it attempts to install many of the same updates it already said were successfully installed. So where is it flagging this info and how do I clean it up?     - Reinstalled XP now monitor and audio card are not working My wife's computer was hopelessly virus-ridden so I copied all text files then reinstalled XP Home Edition using the CD that came with the Dell. No viruses now! BUT the monitor is grainy and I can't reset it even after going into display-settings-advanced-monitor. There is no option there except for "default monitor."     - Files & Settings Transfer I just bought a new computer and have it connected to my home network. I have shared the C: drive on both machines and allowed network users to change files and can access them from either machine. When I run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and select Home of Office Network as the transfer method I get a message "Windows cannot locate your new computer.     - .BKF file is nearly twice the size of backed-up data Hi all, I just performed an ASR backup of my computer using NTBackup.ese and I have a strange problem that I haven't encountered before. According to Windows Explorer, there is 77 GB of data on my C: drive. However, the .bkf file created by the backup is 151 GB - almost twice the size. Now my external drive is full and I can't do any more backups! I've extensively explored my hard drive, including looking at System and Hidden files, but I am unable to explain this discrepency.     - Computer won't start up I'm not entirely sure if this is XP related, but I'm not sure what else it could be, but, when I start up my computer, it'll take about 5 minutes to start up, it will come on, and just before the windows XP screen appears, the screen goes black, I either have to continuously retsart until it starts up properly, or leave it for about 15 minutes, then start it up again. I originally thought this was a power problem, but I tried my mates power supply in my computer and the same thing happened, so any help would be appreciated.     - System Recovery died Tried to run system recovery on a PC with Windows XP that I replaced and want to donate to a school. Went to quick format to erase all data files and installed applications. Recovery started but stopped (several times) at between 16% and 18% completed, always on a Windows\I386\ file, but never the same one. The screen flickers and the process stalls. Starting over (F-10) doesn't help, same result. Rebooting normally gets a DOS message "NTLDR is missing" CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart, which goes back to the same message.     - System clock switches from AM to PM or PM to AM by itself This started after my last vacation. I left my computer off for about 12 days. When I returned and started it up I noticed the time was 12 hours slow. I changed the time to the correct one using the atomic clock on my wall, verified by my cell phone and by nist.gov website. I've had to change the time about 10 times a day because it keeps changing itself to the incorrect time, 12 hours in the past. The minutes seem to stay correct, keeping in sync with my atomic clock but the PM/AM or AM/PM is always the opposite. I've changed the time in BIOS. I've changed the time in command prompt. Both times using military time. I can't find how to change my windows lock to 24 hour mode to maybe fix this but that's not what I need. I've run 2 anti-spyware programs and neither found any issue I wasn't already aware of (such as some programs starting when windows does, which I need them to). I didn't install or remove any programs before or after shutting the computer down for that 12 day period. I've changed the CMOS battery. The one I took out has perfect voltage as does the new one. I've unchecked 'auto adjust for dst'; sync with windows and/or time.nist but it won't sync. When it did sync a day after this issue started, it synced 12 hours slow. My PC is custom using AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 4600+ at 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM. I'm running WinXP SP2 Home. ** I am now looking at my system properties and it shows my processor is at 1.00GHz. This may be my issue. It's a fairly new processor and I haven't seen it show that before, it usually said 2.4 GHz ** Does anyone have a clue why my clock is so off or if the 1.00GHz issue on system properties for my processor could be the issue?     - Problem reinstalling Wordpad and calculator - keeps uninstalling OE & I accidentally uninstalled Wordpad. When trying to reinstall it via Add/Remove files > Add/Remove Windows Components, I uncheck everything but accesories and then work my way down to Wordpad and Calculator. Check it go back to the root, hit go but find that it uninstalls Outlook Express and Windows Media Player. Reinstall those and Wordpad goes away. I seem to be caught in this endless loop.     - debug slow startup? I got a new XP load for my laptop from our support group and it now takes a long time from the time I enter my password to log into Windows to where the computer is usable.     - Recreating Default User Profile I was troubleshooting a profile problem on a Windows XP PC and found that the user profile was corrupt. I backed up the necessary desktop files, favourites and quicklaunch icons. Removed the user profile in System Properties and logged back on as the user but it loaded up with someone else's desktop wallpaper and old icons and many other things were just wrong. I logged on as myself and the same happened. I checked Default User profile and saw that all this incorrectness was because it was all in the Default User profile. I really want to just recreate the Default User profile. Is there a proper MS way of doing this. I've searched TechNet and can't really find anything that relates to creating Default User profile from scratch. Any advice would be appreciated and thanks for your time.     - disk drive problem My laptop hard drive had problems with corrupt sectors. Chkdsk found several bad spots on the disk and when it tried to reboot, XP would only come part way up and hang. Same result in safe mode. I got a replacement disk and XP load. Now I'm trying to recover some files from the old drive by putting it in the ultrabay of my Thinkpad. The disk shows up in the Device Manager but nowhere else. I can't see it in the Disk Management utility, under My Computer, from a CMD window using DISKPART, etc. I just want to reformat the drive and move on. Any help on making this drive visible again?     - my laptop wont repair hello All, Im having trouble agian with my laptop.when i turn it on its stating that i need to launch start up repair,or start windows normally, windows failed to start,due to a recent software or hardware problem.After trying both ways it comes up with the same message on a blue screen, the installed program cannot start,click ok to turn off the computer.And then i can not get anywhere.I have a systerm recovery disk which display boot menu so i press enter it goes back to lauch repair.     - My Pictures Folders Deleted I accidently deleted several folders of photos from My Pictures. I think that the problem arose as I was attempting to move some photos from one folder to another. I apparently held down the SHIFT key causing the deletions. Any hope on recovering them? I have already preformed a RESTORE operation with no luck.     - Ordinal 56 Error Okay, I have read other posts regarding the ordinal 56 not being able to find something in the iertutil.dll. Now, I understand that it is tied to IE7, and that I need to replace the file. I downloaded a copy of iertutil.dll off the net and copied it to my System32 folder. Now I end up with this ordinal 56 error anytime I try to install a new copy of IE7 or any older IE. I also get the same error when I run installs for a number of other programs, or try to run numerous programs that I already have on my PC. What can I do to fix this? Is there a way to recreate the original iertutil.dll file as it should be? I cannot access system restore or last known good. I have tried svc /filerepair (no, this is not really what it was called, but it was something I read that said it restores the faulty system files from the XP Home SP2 disc), and that was to no avail. What am I to do? I am running Mozilla in the mean time. Please, anyone with a tip, let me know. I've tried everything I could find so far. When I got to "Backing up files" in the XP-SP3 Installation Wizard, all
progress stopped. When I brought up Windows Task Manager, I found that
CTHELPER.EXE was using 97% of the CPU. When I killed the CTHELPER.EXE
process, the SP3 installation went on to completion with no further
problems.

CTHELPER is installed with a Creative/Soundblaster audio card and does not
need to be running all the time; that's why killing it caused no problems.
Beyond that, I have no idea as to why it screwed things up, except I do not
have mine running at all when Windows starts - you could ask the tech
support folks at Creative.
