Using Outlook Express 6 on WinXP Pro. Password on POP acct not being saved.
Have read many threads and found Knowledge Base article on the problem. I
have tried all of the options and all fail. The option to delete key from
register doesn't work. When I try to delete the key I get a message that
delete failed because of....some words which I currently forget. If its
important let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Not a big deal, but a pain in the butt.

I guess my post was the only one you didn't look at, or reply to, in XP

And that is supposed to tell us WHICH article you read? Was it the
article mentioned by Bruce in his reply?

> I have tried all of the options and all fail.

No, not all. Just those you can think of or have researched so
far. Since you don't mention what you have tried, expect respondents to
duplicate in their replies what you already tried.

So, in the e-mail account defined in OE, is the checkbox to remember
your login credentials actually enabled?

> The option to delete key from register doesn't work.

"Doesn't work" means what? That you deleted the key but a reload of OE
still has it complaining the login credentials are required? That you
cannot delete the registry key? That you cannot even get into the
registry?

> When I try to delete the key I get a message that delete failed
> because of....some words which I currently forget.

Was it maybe saying that you don't have permissions to delete that key?
If so, did you change the permissions as noted in method #3 in the
article that Bruce mentions? Are you logged in under an admin-level
account so you can actually change permissions of registry keys?

> If its important let me know.

You expected focused replies based on a non-described error message?

See Bruce's reply to your post in WinXP General (which he crossposted to OE

Thanks for your post. This is my first time using this resource so I'm
progressing up the learning curve.

I found your first reference earlier and in following it ran into a brick
wall, hence my post to this group. As you are aware, it deals with using the
applications software interface to try and solve the problem AND if that
doesn't work, use the registry editor. I tried adding an identity in OE and
deleting the default 'Main Identity' without any success.

Your second reference (290684) was new to me and I like it since it deals
specifically with the editing of the registry. This is also referred to in
the above reference. With an aplolgy for my previous 'distilled' version,
I'll describe what happens. I used 290684 as my 'program' and took some
screen shots as well.

After I choose 'permission' from the Edit menu in Registry Editor, I get a
dialog box that shows 4 entries - all are identified as 'Allow.' 3 of the 4
show 'Full Control' and the other (RESTRICTED) shows 'Read.' There are 2
options that can be checked. The first starts 'Inherit from parent the
permission.....' It is checked. The second is the one referred to 'Replace
permission entries....' When I check that one and hit the apply button I get
a Security warning message that starts out 'This will remove explicitly
defined permissions....' With a choice of yes or no. I choose yes. There
is a bit of a blink and the screen then shows the dialog box with the second
check mark missing - the same as it was when I started this part of the
operation. When I try to delete the key I get another query as to yes or no,
I respond yes and then I get a "Error Deleting Key' message that states
'Cannot delete S-1-5-21-4074520820-1956087346-1005: Error while deleting
key.'

And that is where I was when I started this series of threads.

I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

Thanks

This /is/ the Outlook Express logon password you created and not an identity
password, correct?

In Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers, is the correct password
entered and is the box checked to Remember Password? Does the box become
unchecked?

Yes. I use a gmail account and have done so for a couple of years. The
process works fine on a WinXP media edition laptop that I use. Its just on
the desktop system that I recently restored that the problem arises. I have
no other problems with it other than run-of-the-mill stuff. I was using
Outlook, but when this thing came up I uninstalled it to try and keep the
debugging as simple as possible.

Since you mention you did use Outlook, have a look at these links.

Make OE the default e-mail client:
http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx

For links in e-mail:
http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx

And:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098

Restores OE to the E-mail clients list in Internet Options
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/oe_client.htm

If you have/had MS Outlook installed, also see:

Thanks for the additional info.

I have read the ref matl and didn't come up with anything.

Like a lot of folks, I have a lot of options and only so much time to spend
on what is a minor but annoying issue. I chose to load Mozilla Firebird and
leave the wreckage behind. No password problems.

I appreciate your help and your flexible attitude. Thanks again.
