I finally heeded Microsoft's warnings and installed Outlook 2003 after
resisting for so long ("resistance is futile"), and uninstalled Outlook
Express after being satisfied everything was migrated over and functioning.

Previously, during my time with Express, something (Norton, I think)
triggered the Identity Login dialog to pop up in the beginning of any
session, Express running or not. This is a known problem with Norton and
I've learned to live with it all this time. After performing the switch from
Express to 2003 and uninstalling Express, I figured it would go away, being a
part of Express, but lo and behold, the same dialog still pops up asking for
a profile (I assume because of the same Norton Liveupdate issue).

How do I get rid of it?

I've NEVER had said problem with Norton -- over more than 15 years of
experience.

It sounds as if you didn't set up your mail account in OE properly -- and
tweak Norton as appropriate.

It's listed several times in Norton's support database; my one-on-one with
their tech support also yielded the same answer.

Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs. Is that not how it's uninstalled?

No. You cannot uninstall OE, although you can Remove it (make it
inaccessible in Windows) via Add/Remove Windows Components.

Arrrggghhhh! I meant through Add/Remove Windows Components, located in the
same general panel. I checked it again; it's still unchecked. I suspect
after I did this that it left little tidbits behind that might've been locked
or thought "in use." Any suggestions? Re-add and remove?

Back to square one, after a brief sojourn into OT territory...

Explain.

It sounds like you're confusing a log-in prompt for your WinXP User Account
(i.e., when you start your machine) with a log-in prompt to open OE (e.g.,
if your identity was password-protected).

If LiveUpdate is configured to run when you start your machine (which would
require being connected to the internet), that could be the cause of the
User Account log-in prompt.

In any event, it has nothing whatsoever to do with OE (nor OL, in all
likelihood).

Norton is crap designed to mess up mail even more that it messes up Windows.
Same for McAfee.
