Hi,

How can I stop OE from adding an Approved header to USENET posts?

Thanks.

What are you considering to be an approved header?

Not AN approved header, THE Approved header. OE seems to automatically add it to
get USENET postings onto moderated groups. I am trying to post to a server but
get the 441 error ?You are not allowed to approve postings? because OE adds
?Approved: blah@blah.blah? to the headers. You can see the Approved header in OE
via View->All Headers.

I need a way to stop OE from adding it automatically. I cannot even work around
it in the meantime by removing it since there is no way to edit the headers in
OE, and if I save the message to disk and edit there then drag-n-drop it back
into OE, it is no longer sendable.

I guess someone else will need to address your question. My OE6 does not
have that option. In View | All Headers I have:

I thought of that and already checked the OE tweaking apps I?ve got. None of
them mentions this feature/hack.

That?s what I?ll do. I?ve got backups of my OE settings going back to at least
2003, plus I can extract the defaults from a sandbox installation to compare.

Thanks, but that?s for adding headers, it doesn?t let you remove them.

One sees this following line in your posts' headers:

Organization: Synetech inc.

Are you access your newsgroups from work or via your employer's network?

It?s not the server. In fact the server is nagging me that I CAN?T have that
header. ;) If you view the source of one of my posts here, you?ll see that it
does have it.

I suspect that it is probably some registry entry that some
?clever? program added but forgot to include in its interface (and forgot to
include an undo option). I?ll check the reg in a bit.

Yup. Somehow a hidden OE switch got flipped. It was the Moderator value (I can?t
seem to figure out what the GodMode value does). Judging by the other reg
entries that were added before and after it, I think that OE-QuoteFix may be the
culprit here, although I cannot find that option in it.

When you have that option active (for example if you moderate a newsgroup), then
View All Headers displays that field in the New Newsgroups Post window. The
problem is that it is not immediately obvious, but the field is actually
editable despite its appearance. Further, it will automatically populate with
your email address which then gets added to the headers. If however, you delete
the contents of the field, it will not add the Approved header. I left the
option active and deleted the field for this message; viewing the source shows
that the header is not present.

I sent the post to that moderated server that I was trying to and it worked.
Problem solved, extra knowledge gained. :)

Thanks.

I think there is a registry hack to make OE work for a moderator
but then there would be a label somewhere (perhaps in the Folder bar)
which indicates that.

Probably the only one who knows this is Jim Pickering and he doesn't
post here any more...

That's one of those hidden features that goes back to the IE3 Internet
Mail and News program which is the predecessor to OE.

Re: ? Turning Off Approved Header by Michael

Jim's not the only one who knows about this.

To get the Approved by header line:

edit the registry to add/update the following key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{guid}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\News]
"Moderator"=dword:00000001

- When you next start News, and create a New post or reply, click in
View, Full Headers. You'll now have an Approved entry.

Then whenever you post/reply, it will insert your e-mail address (from
the news account ). You can edit that header line contents before
submitting.

That feature goes back to the IE3 Internet Mail and News.

The key is not there by default. A value of 0 turns it off.

The problem is that the field is not displayed as an edit control like the
others, so it is not clear that you can edit it; it looks more like a static
label (like the Control field).

I suspect that was by design. The assumption being that you shouldn't
normally need to change it. But since that program logic is more than
10 years old, there's probably no one an Microsoft who remembers.
