What would cause OE 6 to suddenly fail to
send e-mails with attachments. It can send
and receive e-mails without any attachments,
but won't send an e-mail with any files
attached. No errors or anything else is
reported.

I don't see anything on the Security tab for
outgoing restrictions or conditions.

What exactly happens when you try?

Does it leave the Outbox?

Does it arrive in Sent Items?

Is e-mail scanning enabled?

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and
causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes
and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V
program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

Bill

I'll have access to the offending machine again
tomorrow and I suspect that it is indeed an A/V
problem. I seem to recall that the machine has
Norton A/V installed. And, since I don't use
that product it didn't occur to me that it might
be causing problems. I use AVG without the
e-mail scanning installed, so my mind just
didn't think about A/V as a cause.

I'll post back after I've had a chance to check
it out.

And no, the e-mail never makes it to the Sent
Items nor does it appear in the Outbox.

Thanks Bruce,
Bill

Michael

Your error message would suggest a possible error in the Windows File
Associations for the file type.

Can you save the attachment (e.g. File Save Attachments)?

If you save the attachment and double click it, does it open OK?

If the saved attachment opens OK, but not directly from OE, that would
suggest an error in the OPEN action in the Windows File Associations.
If saved attachments also fail, you have a more general error in the
file association.

What type of attachments are these?

I'll pass that on to the owner of the "Norton" machine. I don't have
any first-hand experience with Avast. Is that somewhat like what
AVG had with its Freeware a couple of years back?

Much the same as AVG. I had AVG and switched to Avast. I felt it was a
better supported program, but have been told that AVG is doing better now.
Take a look.

Avast:

AVG support comes out of Europe, so turnaround on
a problem is not the best. They do hang in there until
the problem gets resolved........they could use some
added education in English, but certainly better than
the whatever you call them in India.

I'm off for a few days, but I'll give Avast a look next
weekend.
Thanks,
