I have been trying to backup Outlook Express email and when I try to open the
folder, everything is garbled, numbers or letters, and looks nothing like the
original emails. I am using WordPad to open the email backup folder and I
am not sure if this is the correct program. Can someone tell me what I am
doing wrong and tell me a better way to back up the emails?
Thanks for your help!!!
Sue

I don't know what folder you are trying to open, but without a special tool,
only Outlook Express can read the dbx files.

I use this:

This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is
written in red. That is referring to a different program.

Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB):

Don't confuse backing up with archiving. Backing up does just that. If
something goes wrong and you lose messages. a backup program like this can
restore them, but they cannot be read from this program.

Hi EllieSue,

Here is a step-by-step procedure of doing that from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670
or
a good free backup program written my a MS MVP
http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/oebackup.html
or
a program that will do it for you for $19.95
http://www.oe-backup.com/

You can't see the messages in Wordpad

Create a new identity and just keep them there. You don't have to set up an
account. You should still backup OE daily with a program like OEQB.

You can also save the messages to the Desktop, and if you want, save that to
CD.

Create a folder on your Desktop, then in Outlook Express open the folder
with the messages you want to save. Highlight one message, then Ctrl+A will
highlight them all, (or hold the Ctrl button down while you select only the
messages you want), Now, drag and drop them to the folder on your Desktop.

Now you can copy that folder to a CD and you will be able to read the
messages on the CD by double-clicking on them.

The downside of this is that messages that have the same subject will be
overwritten. To avoid this, purchase:

The correct location for OEBackup is www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/

I would not trust a 3rd party distributor, who is unauthorized to distribute
the software.
