To make a long story short, I switched back from Thunderbird to OE; fewer
log-in problems. I also had to chnage file associations form Thunderbird
.eml files to those files associated with OE. I am not sure if this is the
source of the problems, but I got a message from ISP that there were new
newsgroups. I was looking through the list and chose a group I wanted to add
and got a message that OE encountered a problem and had to close.

"Hanging app was msimn.exe"

Then, a Dr. Watson PostMortem Debugger failure message.

Then there was the Fault Bucket message 45257867

I tried the same thing over again and got the same error messages. I can't
add any newsgroups without OE crashing.

I have had log in problems with ISP. Only recognizes my user ID and password
75% of the time via email client and 100% of the time using webmail. Perhaps
there's corruption somewhere. Can someone give me a hand to get started to
correct these issues. I can get mail and I can get and read Usenet messages
without difficulty.

I have WinXP SP2, all up to date, AVAST, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Comodo
Firewall and Super-Anti-Spyware. My guts tell me there's no easy fix and
there is pain ahead. Thanks.

Diane

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities > Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Not yet--have not had the time today, but will over the weekend. I will post
the results. I did however disable email scanning as you suggested. I have
always created local folders for the saved stuff and do empty deleted items
when OE closes

I presume I should not choose the name "Main Identity" for the Main Identity
when I delete the old/create the new account or won't it make a difference?

Interestingly enough, I answered your post yesterday afternoon, and it got
kicked back to me, so I am going to have to do something soon, like today.
It seems the problems are compounding. I'll post back....

Thanks for your help, PA Bear.

PA Bear--

I followed your procedure and I no longer have "fault bucket", nor is Dr
Watson in a Post-Mortem state. ;-)).

Seriously though, thanks for your help. You provide a wonderful service here
for those of us who have issues and are to complimented. OE is now working
flawlessly.

Very good and thank you very much for your feedback.

[I do not recommend naming any new identity "Main Identity" and I also
recommend not using either "main" or "identity" in the name to avoid any
possible confusion.]
