I've really done it this time.............
I was cleaning up my Outlook Express and
accidentally deleted
my sub-group addresses where I kept them filed by
type. I
didn't even realize I did it until I opened OE
again and they
were gone.
I got a new cell phone which has PDA-Sync on it
and in trying
to bring across my contacts from Outlook Express,
but it brought
those "lost" contacts. Where can I find those
lost group addresses
and restore them so I can back them up and then
try bring the
1st level contacts that I want on the cell phone.

IE 6.00.2900.2180
OS: Win XP Sp2

Thanks in advance for the help !

OE makes a backup WAB file. The backup might still have your data.

The Windows Address Book (WAB)

How can he restore the "sub-group" from the WAB backup (WAB~ file) to his
Address Book, Michael?

If PDA-Sync will, in fact, synchronize with (Windows) Address Book, will the
sync include the "sub-groups"?

I'm suggesting that he restore the whole address book backup. It should
have the address book as it was just before his last round of changes.

That's my problem PA Bear. The phone does sync
with OE but it's bringing
across the "lost info" not the current info I
wanted to use. So I figured that
the lost groups from the address book are
somewhere on my hard drive.
I just know how to look for them. And no, I know
I'm bad, I didn't back
up the address book. Any more ideas ?

P.S.... I'm a she !

Thanks Bubey (and that's my grandmother name)

I am assuming all of your OE data is in the default location.

1. Enable "Show Hidden Files and Folders" =>
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html

2. Open a (Windows) Explorer to C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book <=this folder

3. Does this folder contain a file with a WAB~ extension (e.g., BUBEY.WAB~)?

Don't *do* anything with it yet, just tell me if it's there.

Yes, I have "show hidden files and folders"

It shows 2 WAB files.....Nancy.wab~ 390kb
type: WAB~File
and Nancy.wab 1091 kb type:

1. Open OE File | Identities | Manage Identities: Is your identity named
"Nancy" here? Are there any other identities listed here? If so, what are
their names?

2. Assuming NANCY.WAB is your identity's Address Book, is this the one
that's now missing these "sub-groups"?

1. Yes, my Nancy is there as well as another
identity DSG. I checked the DSG address
book and it was the same as my Nancy book. No
groups attached.

2. Yes, the Nancy.wab address book is where the
groups are missing from.

Are the groups missing in DSG.WAB as well?

Are DSG.WAB and DSG.WAB~ both found in C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book <=this folder?
If so, do DSG.WAB and DSG.WAB~ have the same (identical) size?

Why do I ask? I am very concerned that NANCY.WAB and NANCY.WAB~ aren't
identical in size. By any chance had you renamed the default MAIN IDENTITY
to NANCY?

Re: Lost Group Addresses - Can I get them back ? by Bubey

Bubey
Thu May 08 22:16:40 PDT 2008

I did a search and here's what I found on my hard
drive when I opened each file.
Nothing came up for the DSG identity anywhere.

Nancy.wab 2 KB C:\Documents and
Settings\Nancy\Recent - Type: Shortcut
Address book w/lost groups are showing

Nancy.wab 1,091 KB C:\Documents and
Settings\Nancy\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book
Type: Address Book File
Address book w/lost groups are showing

Nancy.wab~ 390 KB C:\Documents and
Settings\Nancy\Application Data Microsoft\Address
Book
Type: WAB~File
Address book w/lost groups are showing

But when I clicked on OE, and the address book, it
didn't not show the lost groups.

Nothing came up at all for the DSG identity.

I did the suggested changes for you.

Are the groups missing in DSG.WAB as well?

Are DSG.WAB and DSG.WAB~ both found in
C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Address Book <=this folder?
If so, do DSG.WAB and DSG.WAB~ have the same
(identical) size?

Why do I ask? I am very concerned that NANCY.WAB
and NANCY.WAB~ aren't
identical in size. By any chance had you renamed
the default MAIN IDENTITY
to NANCY?

Please change "Automatically wrap text at" setting
to 76. Doing so will
make your posts to the newsgroups (and the quoting
they contain) more
legible for all concerned. Thanks.

You might want to make the same change in OE Tools
| Options | Send | Mail
Sending Format | Plain Text.

http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm

Your Windows user name is Nancy.
Your Address Book will be and is Nancy.wab.

You have two Identities, Nancy and DSG.
Each Identity has a folder in the Address Book. Plus there is a Shared
Contacts folder.
Your Address Book will have three folders, Shared Contacts, Nancy, and DSG.
When you open the Address Book, the contacts for the current Identity will
be displayed.
You can't see the contacts for non-current Identities unless you Start, Run,
wab /a . You must have View, Folder and Groups checked.

Do you have Folders and Groups showing in a left pane in the Address Book?
Have you checked in the Shared Contacts for the missing group?

There will not be a DSG.wab unless you had a DSG Windows user.
If there was a DSG.wab, it would be located @ C:\Documents and
Settings\DSG\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

I think another possibility is that they could both have the same data
but if a lot of editing was done the backup instance could be
a compacted version of the original.

She could get a better idea of what was actually in both by using
SysInternals strings command line tool. E.g. just opening a wab file
with Notepad gives less insight due to all the obscuring doublebyte
formatting and other binary data represented as text characters.

Oh... I guess she could also open each wab, e.g. using wab.exe
and then export them to .csv files to get a different impression of
(most of) what each contained too... ; ) Then those files might
even be comparable (e.g. using windiff.exe or even fc.exe)...

FWIW

In reverse order:

> I did the suggested changes for you.

1. Thanks. I see no difference but don't worry about it.

> Nothing came up at all for the DSG identity.

2. Assuming (a) the identity named Nancy is the one you use, (b) the
identity named DSG is NOT used by anyone AND (c) it doesn't contain any
messages you or anyone else wants, Remove it via OE File | Identities |
Manage Identities.

NB: If any condition in #2 above is NOT true, skip this step!

3a. Right-click on a blank area of your desktop | New | Folder | Name this
folder "AddressBookWork" (w/out the quotes).

3b. Open Windows Explorer to C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book <=this folder
again.

3c. Right-click on NANCY.WAB~ and select COPY

3d. PASTE (CTRL+V) the contents of your clipboard into the desktop folder
you created in #3a above | Right-click on NANCY.WAB~ | Rename it to
NANCYTEST.WAB

3e. Double-click on NANCYTEST.WAB to open it: Are the missing "sub-groups"
present in this file?

PDA-Sync 4 Works with Outlook, Organizer, Notes & ACT on Windows XP or
Vista.

"my sub-group addresses where I kept them filed by type" is an Outlook
Address Book feature.
Outlook and Outlook Express use different Address Books unless you share.

Did you really mean to say Outlook Express?
Do you have Outlook installed and do you use it?

All of the work with the wab file may be for naught.
Bubey mentioned using PDAsync and sub-group addresses filed by type. Both
of those mentions point to Outlook.

O.K. guys, can we start over. I don't think we're on the same page. Please
Let me clairify what I am saying and referring to. I got the impression
from
Ron's note that I may be using the wrong terminolgy.

by PC Sync, I meant the terminology used by the cell phone manufacturer
(Motorola) in what the cell phone is capable of doing. The software to
make
the PC Sync is: "Motorola Phone Tools", which I de-installed. It will
either use
Outlook or Outlook Express to bring across contacts info to the phone. I'll
re-install and see if I can get it to work.
The lost contacts were sub folder under the main "contacts" in Outlook
Express.
Outlook is loaded on my hard drive with Office, but I don't use it.
When I did the search and found the "nancy.wab" and nancy.wab~, both had the
lost sub folders in them.
By Identities I was referring to those referred to in Outlook Express, not
my
user name on my laptop.
Hope this helps.

Have you Start, Run, wab /a , OK?
View, check Folders and Groups?

If you have a group, there will be a + sign in front of a folder in the left
pane.
Click on the + sign, then the group name.
Are the addresses in the group name?
Under which folder is the group?

After the Run, wab /a - up came the address book "without" the lost groups.
View, Folders & Groups was already checked.
What I can't understand is why the lost groups appear in the nancy.wab file
on my hard drive but not in OE when I open and use it ???
