Hi --

Something odd has begun to happen in Outlook Express. A google search
reveals hundreds of people writing in about it, but so far I've found no fix
and am hoping that one of the experts here may have a suggestion.

A friend asked for assistance when none of her midi files would play in
Outlook Express. When I checked her code, I noticed that "volume=-9640" was
included in her BG sound tag. As soon as that value was changed to zero,
all was normal again.

Since she had no explanation for where that value came from, I checked my
own desktop system. Sure enough, OE inserts "volume=-9640."

Next I checked my notebook computer which has just had XP reinstalled after
a complete reformat and everything is normal on that computer.

Only midi files are affected; all other sound file types play as before. No
Windows system files are affected.

Obviously, something has caused this unwanted change. Does anyone have a
suggestion for how we can get the default volume value back to zero?

Thanks.

Zan

Never mind -- I figured out the problem seconds after posting.

Should anyone else here be having the same problem, right click on the
volume icon in the systray then left click on Open Volume Control.

In my case, the slider bar for Midi was all the way at the bottom. I moved
that up to half-way, and Voila! problem solved.

What program changed that setting for me remains a mystery.

A MIDI in an incoming message that was inserted in a low volume can change
it on your end.
