longmere,
1. Create a new local folder in OE for the Sent Messages that you want to
save.
2. Highlight and drag (or right click and Select "Copy/Move To") the
messages that you want to save into the newly created folder.
a. Double check and make sure that you have moved all the messages you
want to keep, in OE.
3. In OE> TOOLS> Options> Maintenance tab> Store folder location> Write down
the location of the Message Store folder.
4. Close OE.
5. Do a Search for Sent Items.dbx, under the Advance settings for the
Search, check the box to show Hidden files.
6. When you find the right Sent Items.dbx file, copy and paste it into a
folder that you create in MY Documents, or any other easily found location
for you. This copy of the Sent Items folder can be used if something goes
wrong. After a while you can delete this file when it is no longer needed.
7. Once you made a copy of the file and saved it into a folder, Delete the
Sent Items.dbx file from the OE Message Store folder.
8. Restart OE, and a new Sent Items.dbx folder will be created.

You should not keep messages in the Default OE Mail folders, such as Inbox,
Sent Items, etc...
You should create local folders and Move them into these folders on a
regular basis. There is always a good chance that the *.DBX files associated
with these folders will be corrupted, which is what probably happened in
your case.
