I have a client with a Windows 2000 Pro workstation that has IE 6 startup
trouble. After starting the browser, it takes 30 to 60 seconds for the first
page to load, even if the default page is blank. After the delay, the
browser performs normally, but it happens for every browser window that is
opened. I've tried removing all 3rd party add-ons, resetting web settings
and even removing and reinstalling IE, with the same results. Does anyone
have and suggestions on troubleshooting, or have you had similar issue?

Many thanks!

Does this behavior persist if the machine's offline or after booting into
Safe Mode (with or without Networking)?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

It is running the Trend Micro Client/Server/Messaging Security client, which
has some Anti-Spyware capabilities. I tried to disable this, with the same
result. It is also fully patched at Windows Update and has no 3rd party
firewall. Since it is Windows 2000 and not XP, it won't let Windows Defender
install.

I haven't tried to restart in Safe Mode. I will have to go on-site next
week and try it. I'll also try MSCONFIG to disable all non-Microsoft
services to see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'll post my results after trying more
troubleshooting next week.

I have the exact same problem as Mike C on my PC at work which is on Windows
2000 Pro.. I've now installed Mozilla which works fine on my PC but I'd
rather use IE if possible.

Any advice to sort out this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem with IE6. It's fully updated, no third
party firewalls, running Symantec antivirus. I'm also using Mosilla Firefox
with no problems, but would really like to get back to IE6 if at all
possible. The problem just started 2 weeks ago, and I cannot figure out what
is causing it. Any help would be appreciated.

I seemed to have stumbled on to the answer on another thread here.
Apparently there is a conflict with the google toolbar after the current
Windows updates have been installed. I uninstalled my toolbar and then
reinstalled it and now my web pages are loading quickly again. To check if
this is the problem with yours, go to view, toolbars, and uncheck google to
make it disappear. When you open a new browser window, the problem should be
corrected. Good Luck.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

That worked for me too. I removed Google toolbar and the issue was resolved.
Also, I downloaded the Sysinternals tool Autoruns to find and remove all
other IE add-ons.

Thanks to all for your input.
