Whenever I open a new instance of IE it has problems loading. An IE6 screen
opens with the message in the task bar that the website has been found, but
the webpage doesn't load. If I right click on the task bar box for that
instance of IE6 it releases IE6 from the "holding pattern" it is in. If I
don't right click the webpage eventually loads two or three minutes later.

I am running Windows 2000 with all the updates applied. I had Norton
Antivirus 2000 loaded, but uninstalled it in the process of trying to debug
the problem. So now I have no antivirus, never had a firewall, and have no
spyware loaded.

Hi,
Security programs can slow down the loading of webpages, but running (in
this day and age) without security programs is definitely not recommended.

Is NAV 2000 still updateable?

From Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third-party browser
extensions." If this helps, you still need to find the troublesome toolbar,
program. BHO or add-on.
ToolbarCop from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm will help identify
and remove add-ons.

Try clearing the Temporary Internet Files and History. Make sure the TIF
folder isn't too large. 50-100 MB recommended.

This may well be a malware problem. No malware removal program detects
everything.

sI downloaded the critical updates from Microsoft two days ago. When I
rebooted after the download, I briefly received a message stating that a
google file could not be found. After this, Internet explorer takes 90 - 95
seconds to load a new browser page. Mozilla and Netscape load within 10 - 15
seconds. I have wiped all the cookies, temp files, etc and have reloaded
Internet Explorer three times. No change. I need to know then how to get
rid of the google tool bar and reinstall it. Any ideas.

Just curious, why re-install it? What purpose is having the toolbar? What
functions do you gain that aren't available by simply surfing to google.com?

Google gives me a pop up blocker and a few other things that I like. But
after uninstalling google I did not have the problem. Then I tsted the cause
by downloading the latest ggogle tool bar and the problem began again. So
google is the problem and I guess until they fix the problem, I will not use
the google tool bar.

Matt, I had the same problem and found out that my google toolbar was the
problem. Go to the toolbar area right mouse click and uncheck the google
tool bar. This will stop the long delay in starting Internet Explorer until
a fix is found. Hope this helps you and solves part of your problem.

Mark, that solved it. After I confirmed that was the source of the problem,
I went one step further and uninstalled the Google Toolbar completely. To
the best of my knowledge I never used it, so removing it seemed to make
sense.

Thanks again.

I don't know about NAV 2000, but NAV 2005 definitely is.

BTW, as I noted in my other thread, I don't usually run "naked." but was
doing so in order to simplify the problem diagnosis.

It merely gives them access to follow your search and surf habits.

Google is Google... they have no right to be inside of your computer...
simply go there when you need them.

I am in my 8th year of going naked on Win 2K.... Ad Aware Free installed
and kept up to date since around 6 years ago, and that's all. It's all about
safely using your mail programs and doing the ocassional 'on-line' virus
scan and not giving over your PC to the invasiveness of AV. The least
obnoxious seems to be AVG if you must have an on-board scanner.

Are you comfortable in the 2K registry?? If so, Google is not truly gone
until it's cleaned up.

Thanks for that heads up David. I will run Uniblue RegistryBooster2 one more
time then.

AVG was suggested by the ATT Support Plus folks for just that reason.
Norton's anti-worm feature regularly sees the normal ATT DSL signals as worms
and breaks the signal thereby disconnecting the system from the ISP.

Norton and McAfee are both notorius for not only bogging down the OS,
but for deciding that they have complete control over a number of functions
that would otherwise operate smoothly and safely.

I don't run any AV on my 98SE and 2K systems, but I do have *available*
(as in NOT automated or active) the AVG Free on all of my XP boxes.
I still prefer to do on-line checks with Symantec Security Center.

Matt & Mark Thank you. I have had the same problem for about 2 weeks and have
been turning my system inside out trying to resolve it. Have been to MS site
several time looking for solutions and finally found your disscussion.
Turning off the google tool bar fixed my problem. Just a note for others.
When I went to turn off the google tool bar, it did not say google. Just a
check mark next to nothing! Maybe I caused that, but I don't think so.
On the bright side I removed and cleaned up a bunch of clutter inside my
system and now it runs faster.
