I read this and other newsgroups not less than ever other day and insure
that I have left no messages unread. Today I found 18 messages from the
second week of January showing up as unread needing to be downloaded "get
next 1000". They were NOT there yesterday!
How can this occur as I do not want to miss replies to interesting threads.

I just follow up on this and find that in other newsgroups which show no
messages unread or no old messages that if I "get next 1000" I find groups
of messages that were unread dating from 1 to 3 months ago.
I am Confused, please explain the "why" of this.

Tools > Options > Read > Get XXX headers at a time

You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click on the newsgroup in
Folders pane > Synchronization Settings > select New Messages Only. Now
every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will download the
next-newest set of headers/messages.

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#cleannews (lotsa good stuff
there).

Thank you Bear but I was aware of all that. This does nothing to explain
while after 3 months some unread messages show up that were not there
previously.

Oddities like that are usually due to something on the newsserver's end, not
something in OE.

OE can only offer/display what's on the server. If a message has been
removed from the server, it will be deleted in OE the next time OE syncs
with the server. If a message suddenly (re)appears on the server, OE will
offer it the next time OE syncs with the server.

Tell us, did these messages suddenly become available in a newgroup access
via the MS newsserver (msnews.microsoft.com)?

Without a trace (e.g. at least OE's troubleshooting log) it is pointless to speculate.
Causes which have been seen previously vary from unsynchronized cloned servers
to very old previously deleted messages being received from downstream servers
that rarely connect.

One thing that you can do is check the Xref headers of the messages you are
interested in. If their numbers show the messages only recently arrived at
the server farm you connect to you will find that the date you see is irrelevant
and the reason you are getting them is because the server just got them too.

Etc.

Lots of possibilities. They could be misdated by the sender or his ISP. He
might have posted to a different sender and they just came on.
