Hi,
Having Windows XP SP2 with IE6 SP2, when i access some certain
websites, browser crashes with the error:

For example when i click on this link i get the error:
http://193.95.171.83/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=603,E=0000000000339010150,K=1793,Sxi=19,kb=ww_english_add,VARSET=CategoryID:213,VARSET=mcn:MP3
Players,VARSET=catfaq:CATFAQ_213,usetemplate=product.tem,VARSET=ws:http://
us.creative.com/

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting
module mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x000d82b2.

I have IE6 SP2 came with XP SP2 and mshtml version is 6.0.2900.2180.

My Hijackthis Log File seems clean:
http://www.hijackthis.de/logfiles/087146b5b82c948e452dd76d8dec4bea.html
(I know the question marked IP addresses and processes with having no
harm)

Is there a hotfix that i should download and install?

Thanks!

What webpage contains that link?

Do you see the same behavior browsing MP3 players at
http://us.creative.com/products/welcome.asp?category=213&WT.cg_n=Campaigns&WT.mc_id=8860
??

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update and is Automatic Updates

HijackThis log analysis sites such as hijackthis.de are not reliable and
only begin to scratch the surface (e.g., that site doesn't alert the user to
the fact that there isn't an active anti-virus application installed). Even
then, some hijackware isn't seen in the first log, especially using that
outdated v1.99.1. Most crashes involving MSHTML.DLL are caused by
hijackware and/or Trojans/viruses.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

Thanks for response but your answer is too general to point the exact
problem. The crash does not happen always. Yes also browsing mp3
players knowledge base link may cause this error. Never had this
problem on certain sites.
I use hijackthis de to see general view of log then analyze with the
help of web. The computer is old and has a few memory for running XP -
do not ask the amount :)

PS: Unrelated to this thread, mshtml.dll crash may happen ALTHOUGH you
do not have a malware, corrupted system files and improper system
shutdown (an electricity cut off) caused that kind of problems in the
past.

Some of the information that you snipped (perhaps because of Robear's signature placement
though your version of OE does not support that feature):

>>> Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting
>>> module mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x000d82b2.

This shows that the OP has no updates to XPsp2 applied (as far as IE goes).

Sorry but it's not a malware issue, it behaved with same error on a
DIFFERENT malware-free computer which is running on IE6 SP2 with XP
SP2.

The link gives the error (sometimes):

Haven't had error with Firefox.

PA Bear, Could you please inform *which* specific hotfix do i have to
download and install?
Please post the exact link of the hotfix that solves all of mshtml.dll
(also others would be fine).

I do not want to download all the updates which are unrelated to this
problem.
So, if you know the exact and the latest hotfix for mshtml.dll or all-
in-one IE6 fix package it would be better.

It's certainly an incompatibility between some sites and IE 6 not with
the machine itself.

*All* critical updates offered to the machine by Windows Update should be
installed, period.

Protect Your PC!
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/computer/default.mspx

If you want any additional support from me:

1. Install all critical updates offered at Windows Update.

[NB: I do not recommend installing IE7 yet, or installing it via Windows
Update if you do decide to install it.]

2. Post all further replies to this thread (and any further posts to the MS
newsgroups) using Outlook Express newsreader:

If the headers of your replies made using Outlook Express (OE) do not
indicate that the machine's fully patched, I will not reply to the post.

With one exception, which you mentioned.... say NO to IE 7... which far too
many people have been unhappily saddled with due to "automatic updates".

This is software.... it should *never* have been listed as a priority 'update'
and spoon-fed to unsuspecting end users without their knowledge. It's
ruined a lot of people's day in my neighborhood... hence my expanded
disappointment with Automatic Updates.

One should check manually (custom option) for necessary updates at
least once a month - installing all high priority updates excepting IE7.
But I personally don't let *anything* run 'automatically' in the background
on any piece of software (or with task scheduler, for that matter).

David,
I don't think so. IE crashes more frequently than Firefox. Maybe you
should try not to get that kind of stupid errors.

PA Bear,
BTW, you've posted wrong Hijackthis version. In your previous post,
it's said that 2.0.2 is the recommended version, but the link you gave
contains 1.99. And checked with Hijackthis 2.0.2 (downloaded from a
correct mirror) and SpyBot S&D, both gave clean results.

You may still want to think it's about malware, i strongly disagree.
No need to extend the topic on that issue.

PS: Please do not suggest me automatic updates, there are a lot of
occasions that went bad after automatic updates also confirmed by a
lot of user(see forums and XP newsgroups), the biggest example of this
is XP and IE6 SP2 (no need to discuss the details, you'll experience
the harmful effects of automatic updates evantually.) That's why a
issue-specific hotfix must be released as downloadable.

Also, i don't understand why you force using Outlook Express, but
Google Web-access isn't too bad for newsgroups. It's up to you to
reply, it doesn't matter.

None of these help, but thanks anyway.

[You've got an awful lot of 2-centses to throw us OT here, don't you?]

IE7 has *never* been offered as a Critical Update, it's always been a High
Priority or Optional update.

If you've installed IE7 via Automatic Updates (AU), you need to change your
AU configuration to Notify Only; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525.

Same issues as always.... I had a question regarding your question. How will
enabling automatic updates solve the OPs issues. (?) But I have an idea as
to the answer.

> IE7 has *never* been offered as a Critical Update, it's always been a High
> Priority or Optional update.

IE7 has always been listed as a 'priority' (an automatic download and automatic
installation for those enabling any part of Auto Update who do not personally
get to see exactly what they're being saddled with and know how to avoid it).

> If you've installed IE7 via Automatic Updates (AU), you need to change your
> AU configuration to Notify Only; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525.

I don't use Automatic Updates.... I'm just getting tired of removing IE7
from PCs because it shouldn't be there if people didn't want to be
guinea pigs for it.... and it leaves some corrupted patch issues
when it's removed.

You're possibly right... but it's a rare day that IE will ever work 100%
correctly again after installing and using a third party browser along
with any plugins that may be foisted into the picture as a result.

Of course... that's just my .02 centses worth.

It's just an item for consideration.... a lot of registry gets changed
with a new browser that's bent on displacing IE.

I want to note that the same stupid errors of IE are occured on some
