I've suddenly lost the ability to search directly from
the address bar - I either get a "The page cannot be
displayed" error, or I get forwarded to freesearch.com or
flashlightsearch.com or some such.

I've run Spybot and Adaware and removed any nasties they
found (I had Clientman at one point, but that's gone
now). I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE and run
Windows Update to install the latest service pack. I've
used "Reset Web Settings" in Internet Options and the "Do
Not Search From the Address Bar" option is not selected.
I'm on XP.

Any clues?

Run the latest version.
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
