With IE6, I could view scripted saved webpages to My Computer and view them
no problem even with the Internet Security level set as high.

I have just installed IE7 and it doesn't work as before. IE7 now seems to
treat saved webpages as the same security zone as intenet pages viewed on the
web!

I want to keep my Intenet Security level high for general browsing but I
want to be able to read my saved emails which I need Javascript enabled to
do. And I don't now want to have to change the Internet Security level every
time I want to view a saved webpage.

It worked no problem on IE6 but I don't know how to get it to work on IE7.
Can anyone help me with this?

Otherwise I will have to roll back IE7 and stick with IE6.

Give the page the Mark of the Web:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/dhtml/overview/motw.asp
or Rename the page from page.HTM to page.HTA
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2brows.mspx#EIAA

Correction. It doesn't work with IE6 either (now anyway). I uninstalled IE7
and rolled back to IE6 and found I couldn't have the Internet Security level
and high and also view saved webpages with scripts.

I am wondering if the problem has come about as one of the Windows Updates I
did at the same time I installed IE7?

What kind of stupid update puts security at risk by forcing you to lower
your Internet security for general browsing simply in order to use IE to read
a saved page on your disk?

Can't someone in charge understand the need to view saved webpages and treat
pages saved to My Computer as a different security zone from the web? I mean
that is such basic security protocol. To get that wrong is to be more stupid
then anyone can imagine!

Hello? Is anyone reading this? Or are there way too many questions for
anyone at Microsoft to answer them all?

If these messages are getting the "Mark of the web" (MOTW) they could appear
to be in the Internet zone.

Thanks Frank. That gives me a work-around or two for now. It would nice to
have a separate security zone for My Computer -an idea for the future of
Windows?

One thing though, changing the file name to .hta
- and ignoring the 2 warning messages -
and then opening the file with IE, there is NO menu or standard buttons, no
File Edit View etc. Nothing just a simple window. OK better than nothing. Can
that be fixed to give a fully-functioning window, other than by editing in a
"mark of the web" and keeping .htm I mean?

Also, I am wondering if there is a registry edit which can be made which
forces Windows to treat My Computer files as all in the trusted zone. Would
be nice. Are you up for that Frank?

Hi Peter,

There is already a "My Computer" Security Zone.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182569

While the Internet Zone, Intranet Zone, Trusted Sites Zone, and Restricted
Sites Zone are the only four Zones listed by default in Internet Options
dialog box, the My Computer Zone can be also be placed there as well:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555599

"Local Machine Lockdown"(the inability to run active content in Html files
stored on the local machine):
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/improvements.mspx
was introduced with Windows XP SP2, it's not a feature of IE7 in general.
In order to view Active Content in locally stored Html files you can use the
two workarounds posted by Frank, or you can Disable "Local Machine Lockdown"
all together.

Good luck,

Donald Anadell
