Vista/IE7 - currently getting script errors and can't use IE. Would like to
uninstall and roll back to IE6 (IE7 was installed on notebook and I believe
uninstalling 7 will take me to IE6?? ) However IE7 does not appear in
add/remove programs. How do I uninstall. Am currently using Mozilla to
browse but I like some of IE features.

You cannot use IE6 with Vista as IE7 is native to the operating system.
Describe the script errors in more detail.

What script errors? What anti-virus application or security suite is
installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What
third-party firewall (if any)? Is Vista SP1 installed (just a question)?

You cannot uninstall IE7 in Vista. You cannot install/use IE6 in Vista.

when I try and nagivate on web pages i get multiple screens on top of
screens popping up stating i have script errors. No pertinent info stated in
box. or i get the error on page on bar when trying to go to a site...click
on symbol and get the same screens popping up. In both cases i can't go any
further and i have to go to the task menu and quit programs. Needless to say
IE is useless to me. I have restored defaults, enabled/disabled script
error. Can IE7 be repaired or uninstalled and reinstalled

SP1 was just installed 3/19. Have Norton antivirus and spyware doctor
installed on system. Doesn't mention anything in error box...just script
error. Also my sidebar is all messed up to if that means anything.

See the KB articles I posted in my first reply.

You can neither repair nor reinstall IE7 in Vista, you can only reinstall
Vista.

Did this behavior start after you installed Vista SP1? Did you disable NAV
*and* Spyware Doctor OnGuard /before/ you installed Vista SP1?

Is your NAV subscription current? Did you purchase Spyware Doctor?

NAV & Spyware Dr. are trial versions (which I am trying-had Norton before
on another notebook & desktop and did not like it ,but heard it now gets
great reviews. Spyware Dr. also got good reviews) No I didn't turn them off
prior to downloading sp1.

Problems started just about two weeks ago so the ie7 problems could be
related. Just not sure.

Should I uninstall sp1 and reinstall?

Please try the possible fixes in the three (3) KB articles I cited earlier

> Problems started just about two weeks ago so the ie7 problems could be

As you only installed Vista SP1 a week ago, I doubt it's the cause of the
problem; however, installing SP1 without first having disabled NAV and
Spyware Doctor OnGuard may have made matters worse.

> NAV & Spyware Dr. are trial versions...

Did the install of either application coincide with the start of the
problems?

When does the NAV trial expire? What anti-virus application(s) had been
installed before you installed the NAV free trial?

I'd uninstall Spyware Doctor myself, /after/ first disabling OnGuard! That
being said, what led you to install Spyware Doctor in the first place?

> Should I uninstall sp1 and reinstall?

While that may be necessary at some point, I wouldn't take such a drastic
step at this juncture, no.

Tried all fixes..nothing.

No the install of NAV and Spydoctor did not cause it that I'm aware of. I
downloaded Spydoctor because I needed spyware and after researching it I
thought it would be one I should try.

Norton came installed (trial) I then tried spybot search and destroy and
AVG. Downloaded trial of nav again - expires in 66 days.

Ran spyware/virus/defender checks and nothing showed up.

FYI-I also cannot check for updates for windows or defender, etc. The
system just hangs (searches and searches).

1. Please (a) disable Spyware Doctor OnGuard [Open Spyware Doctor | click on
"OnGuard" button (left side) | Uncheck "Activate OnGuard" > Exit] then (b)
uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs.

[Vista includes an anti-spyware application, Windows Defender.]

2. Uninstall any/all Norton software via Add/Remove Programs.

3. Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled.

4. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #5 below until you've got another
AV application installed!

5. Reboot and /immediately/ install Avira AntiVir* or the 30-day free trial
versions of NOD32** or KAV7***

[Your anti-virus application should be configured to seek and install
updates automatically, daily, at a time when the machine is usually running
and connected to the internet. It should also be configured to run a full
system scan a few minutes after seeking/installing updates, also daily.
Anything less is simply insufficient these days.]

6. Manually update your new anti-virus application then reboot into Safe
Mode and run a full system scan.

7. Reboot into Windows.

Do your problems persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app, if applicable, or uninstall
it then install another AV application before the free-trial period
expires!]

Did all and it did not fix the problem. (However, I could not update Avira.
When I tried I got the box to ask if I wanted to proceed and I said yes and
nothing happened. Tried twice. ) I still have script errors, and I am unable
to navigate on web pages. I then tried to restore computer and it would not
restore to an earlier date. Can't check for windows updates (just keeps
trying to check for updates, but can't connect). Can I try and install ie7
over the ie7 I have now? Uninstall SP1?

Repeat: You cannot reinstall IE7 in Vista.

According to your previous replies, the problem predates the install of
Vista SP1. You can try uninstalling SP1 but I doubt very much that doing so
will make any difference, Denese.

How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step:

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Assuming uninstalling SP1 makes no difference, it's time to run a /thorough/
check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an
appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
