"Fixing" troubled computer for friend-- hadn't been to windows update or run
antivirus for years. I recently spent hours getting updates (now running XP
SP2), installed and ran LiveOneCare, and Spybot S&D....found tons of bad
stuff. Now, when I install IE7, it won't connect to any site...just hangs,
makes no progress, doesn't even time out. When I go back to IE6, no problem.
Also, I can run "quick scan" on LiveOneCare, but when I try to full scan, it
gets stuck every time at about 80%....on IE! Any help? thanks

I wouldn't even bother. A computer like that is compromised beyond
usefulness. Time to wipe the hard disk and start over. Also time for
your friend to check his/her credit reports.

any ideas that don't involve reloading and invalidating all of my previous
work and hassles???

Usually all you need to do is:
Save My Documents, Favorites, Desktop, Outlook Data, Financial Data to an
external drive.
Then format and reinstall Windows, load your device drivers.
Transfer the data from the external back and install the 3-4 apps you use.
Should take about 1.5 hours max. Which will be much less time compared to
what you are trying to do now.

Just "end it"

Unfortunately, I have already put in the time....the IE problem seems to be
the only thing left! What would make IE6 work with no problems at all and
totally disable IE7 (it NEVER times out! little circle just keeps spinning)?
If anyone else has experienced this particular problem with IE, let me know.
Otherwise, I'll probably be reloading tonight...Thanks for the ideas.
