I was wondering if anyone knew what to do about this. I have not added any
new software etc and have done a Malware sweep etc to no avail.

Basically if I click to open a new tab it just says 'connecting' and never
does anything other than eventually freezing the whole IE7 system.

Hi,
You may have an incompatible browser add-on.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.
More at:
IEBlog Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer?s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

With the warning that a reset will delete autocomplete data, such as
passwords and you will have to reinstall browser add-ons, work through this
article:
936213- How to optimize or reset Internet Explorer 7:

Hope this helps,

Hi Don,

If you have a feedback line back to Microsoft, you might want to suggest
that for IE8, instead of saying "connecting" (which means nothing),
instead it should say something like "initializing add-ons". Then at
least people would know that all that time is taken by their add-ons. It
won't take them long to find the "manage add-ons" menu (hopefully).

Of course it would be much better if the browser didn't hang up from a
bad add-on. They either should have a certain time after which, if they
don't report back that they're ready to go, then they get terminated.
The browser could also give them a limited number of tries. Three
strikes you're out - next browser start that add-on will find it's been
disabled (with a suitably user-friendly dialog box letting the user
decide whether they want that to happen). Alternately, IE could start
each add-on initialization in a separate thread. I think that's not
necessary though - I'd personally go for the timeout and three strikes rule.

Assuming IE7.

Right-click on the IE desktop icon and select the Start without add-ons
option. If this solves your problem, enable add-ons one at a time, testing
as you go, until you find the culprit.

Hi

I too have just encountered the problem of IE7 freezing when opening
new tab, after it had been working perfectly well ever since I firs
installed it when it was released, so I followed this advice and foun
the problem was caused by the Windows Live Toolbar Helper add-on
presumably as a result of the recent load of updates I had downloade
and installed

So if anyone has the ear of Microsoft perhaps they could tell them the
have created a bug (surely not!

Thanks for the hel
