Hi all,

We have a problem in our company recently. Our IE has been upgraded to IE7
and help CHM files stop working. CHM help files are located on shared folder
and IE is unable to open them from that shared folder but if i copy them to
my local pc they are working well. So i am afraid it is some security issue.
I found out this should be cased by security update 896358 or security update
890175 as described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892675/

but the workaround described in that page is not working in IE7. I tried to
edit registry and added UrlAllowList to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\HHRestrictions

...but with no result. Please help me solve this issue. Any suggestions are
highly appreciated.

Thanks
JM

How did they get there? By download?

See if Method 2 (Properties, Unblock) of this article applies?

<title>You cannot open HTML Help files from Internet Explorer after you install
security update 896358 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1</title>

Hello Robert,

I tried the link below. I added
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions and
UrlAllowList into registry but it did not help. Maybe my problem is not
related with 896358 but with IE7 because if I uninstall IE7 than chm files
are working well. I think it is some security issue with IE7 because chm
files are not working from URL but if I copy them to local they are working
fine.

You may also want to try setting the MaxAllowedZone registry value, as
I believe there have been problems with URLAllowList. The easiest way
to set these registry values is with HHReg, a free utility available
from the following page:

http://www.ec-software.com/products_hhreg.html

FWIW, to my knowledge, there are no IE7-specific issues with .chm
files.

That is not in Method 2. (It's not even mentioned in KB902225.)
Please read and address only what I wrote.

Hi Robert,

I found The ItssRestrictions option here ->
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896054

but actually only this setting was not working, nevetheless i found out the
solution. Its MaxAllowedZone = 3 and UrlAllowList with no specific adress.
Only MaxAllowedZone does not work, it has to be UrlAllowList specified also
even if there is no adress.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions]
"MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000003

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions]
"UrlAllowList"=""

Below are some detail notes of testing Microsoft Compiled Help. It is not
true that all *.CHM files will not work from a net work drive. There are
files from many companies, Microsoft included, that will work from any where.
There are other files from many companies, Microsoft included, that just
plain won't work if IE7 is installed.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution
Options\hh.ex
What are the options?

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution
Options\hhctrl.ocx

What are the options?

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

Should this be set?

There are many files that cannot be opened when IE7 is installed.

IE7 is supposed to allow the processing of all Microsoft HTMP Help files
(*.CHM) on the local C drive.

The following files cannot be opened by double clicking on them.

C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft Office\Office 12\1033\VBAOWS10.CHM -- Canâ??t access
second frame
C:\UTL\Microsoft\ProcessExp\v11.13\procexp.chm â?? Quietly goes away
The above file was acquired via download on 22nd May, 2008. The extracted
files provide an unreadable *.CHM file.

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\SQL Navigator 5.5\SQLMNTR.CHM Kills
application
C:\Program Files\Quest Software\SQL Navigator 5.5\SQLNAV.CHM Kills application

All of the following files are on network servers. The results vary.

Q\Developers Software Installs\SPS\WindowsSharePointServicesAdmin.chm The
file opens, but Navigation to Webpage was cancelled. This file is blocked.

Q:\DRIVES\MODEM\mohhelp.chm The file opens, but Navigation to Webpage was
cancelled. This file is NOT blocked.

Q\Developers Software Installs\SDKs\adsi25sdk.zip adsi25.chm. This file
works. The file is not blocked. It is even contained within a zip file.
Extracting the file makes no difference.

The pattern continues. There is no absolutely sure pattern.

I see multiple help files in a directory and some work some donâ??t. The
files that donâ??t work, continue not to work, even when they are on the local
C drive.

The inability to move to IE7 is also preventing the move to VISTA.

I have worked with suppliers to get individual files. I have downloaded
them using IE7. I have used a streams tool from Sysinternals to inspect the
files before and after unlocking the files.

I have applied all of the suggestions in various Microsoft knowledge base
articles. We have downloaded and tried HHReg and while an interesting tool
it did not solve one problem.

This is a huge problem and not one of just little tweaks.

There are other Registry Keys not found when is use Sysinternals Process
Monitor to what is going on with hh.exe and hhctrl.ocx

This is a hell of a lot of work for a small organization.
