Does anyone know how to set the connections settings in IE7 so that the "Never
Dial a Connection" will stick? IE7 always goes back to "Dial whenever a network
connection is not present." I have an alternative dial-up number to use when the
cable is down, and every time the cable slows down the dial-up screen pops up.

Is there a registry setting for this? Or do I have to delete the Dialup number?

I have IE7, reinstalled and fully updated, XP Pro, SP2, fully updated. The only
anti-virus and spyware app I have right now is MS Live Onecare. Someone on
another forum suggested that spyware programs could be the problem.

Thanks.

Ken

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee
VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free and Pro).

I haven't had Norton AV on the computer in question for years. After your
first post on the IE6 Browser newsgroup, I searched for any leftover Norton
or other AV or spyware or adware programs and couldn't find them. That isn't
to say there aren't remnants of them--that has happened to me before. On
that computer I have only the MS Live Onecare program, that includes
Defender. I would assume that Microsoft programs wouldn't cause this
problem.

Assuming it was NAV 2003 or newer, I'd adise running this Removal Tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

If you're running OneCare v1.5, you no longer need to have Defender
installed (if you installed it separately):
http://windowsonecare.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!C29701F38A601141!3842.entry

One of OneCare's "system protections" /might/ be in play here. I'm not
trying to give you the runaround but it'd be best to post to the appropriate
OneCare forum for assistance with this, Ken. The OneCare forums are not
accesible via the Community newsgroup interface.

Windows Live OneCare Forums
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsonecare/default.aspx?siteid=2

Furthermore, if OneCare and/or Defender were enabled/running when you
installed IE7, you may have a horked install of IE7. I suggest reading the
following link...

http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

...and then uninstalling and reinstalling IE7 per Sandi's tips, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx as the installation source,
not Automatic/Windows Update.

I solved the problem but don't really know how to explain it.

I went to Sandi's site about the known issues, found something about the correct
settings for dialup and LAN, including having to check the "Automatically detect
settings" box, and the "never dial a connection" setting now sticks.

At least it doesn't appear to have been an AV or spyware program, or something
left over from Symantec, which is the usual suspect in these cases.

Thanks for your help.

YW & thanks for posting back. (Now, why did the behavior start, assuming it
was a sudden, new problem?)
