I have Adobe Reader 7.xx installed. This url

http://www.belllabs.com/images/MSDS/International/southafrica/TomcatRatMouseBait.pdf

causes my Win 2003 IE 7 to crash (I also have Adobe 6.x Acrobat and Reader
installed). Even if I start IE 7 with -noext, it still crashes.

However, if I start Reader 7.0 before clicking on the link, it runs OK.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks.

This could be a adobe reader problem. I have IE7 and acrobat full version
installed and I can open the link without any crashing and without having to
open up acrobat beforehand.

Hi MikeV06,

I have the exact same problem on one of my two computers. On the
other, I have no problem opening links to PDF's. I have Adobe Acrobat
Pro 7.0 on both computers, so I doubt that this is an Acrobat Reader
problem alone. I will keep my eyes out for a solution and share it
here. I first noticed the crashes just a few days ago.

Good luck!

Mike

What puzzles me is that it still crashes with no extensions. I am tempted
to start the system in safe mode, rename the Adobe 7.0 ActiveX acroPDF.dll
and then see what happens. This control seems to be causing the problems
according to the error message that pops up. SysFader also causes a crash.

I fixed my problem. I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6 and Reader 7.
I then installed the typical setup for Adobe Acrobat 6 which does not
install Reader 6. Next download the updates from the Adobe website and run
them in order. Some of these are combined Acrobat/Reader updates, but
running in this manner works. Before, when I tried the update within
Acrobat, it complained about Reader 6 not being installed. Once Acrobat 6
is running nice and clean, reinstall Reader 7. At this point, one will have
Acrobat 6 and Reader 7 (I did select the option to make Reader 7 the
default viewer during the install). Everything now works as advertised.

Hi again MikeV06,

I am glad you found a fix! My installation is somewhat different. I
have the entire suite, CS2, which includes Acrobat 7 Pro. I am
wondering whether a complete uninstall and reinstall of CS2 would do
the same trick. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Acrobat
7 component alone... maybe I should go for the whole suite. Major job!

Meanwhile, I have downloaded and installed (shhhhhh) Foxfire, which
does not seem to experience any of these problems with PDF's at all.

:-)

Best wishes!
Mike
