Hi,
I'm running valid XP on several different computers and at the moment I'm
testing XP with SP3 on my personal machine. I've integrated the SP3 into
setup cd with automatic install because it saves much time.
after first start I installed the IE7 and MP11 to make sure they don't annoy
me with the "Update available"-messages and got latest updates from MS-Update.
Next point on the list is a virus-scanner, I use Bitdefender 10 free
version, but when trying to install the start of vsserv.exe fails with
message "GetProcessImageFileNameW not found in psapi.dll".

I searched the internet but I didn't found any valid solve of the problem
since this message appears also in some other applications.

I also tried to replace the psapi.dll with earlier versions, with v4 the IE7
is inoperable, the one from sp2 IE7 runs, but with both Bitdefender gets the
same error. According to other solves I searched for other psapi.dll on my
system (also during BD-Installation), but there is only the one in the
system32-folder.

KB932540 tells me the dll may be not registered, but when trying to register
it got worse: running "regsvr32 C:\windows\system32\psapi.dll" tells me
"DllRegisterServer-Entry Could not be found".

I hope U can help me because I have to keep appointments and if I have no
fix for that problem I need to change to Lnx for future installations.

Thx in advise

This error message may be due to a program or programs (currently identified
"culprits" include
Motive SmartBridge,
Hal Screen Reader,
BT Broadband Help (BT Yahoo Help),
and My Dolphin Screen Reader / Magnifier ) that ship with an older version
of PSAPI.DLL
Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located
in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

To work around this error:

Navigate to the installation location for SmartBridge (\Program
Files\Verizon...\Smart...)
Find PSAPI.DLL and rename it to something like PSAPIOLD.DLL (Do not rename
the PSAPI.DLL file in your C:\Windows\System32
directory.)
Reboot the system
The program will find the new PSAPI.DLL in the \Windows\System32 directory
and function normally.

How about switching off your Reply bot and READ YOURSELF what I'm writing in
my post?

I am able to read and I'm able to search a solve in the internet and this
forum myself (as I told in my post!). But I didn't found a solve that fits to
that problem!

I tried to keep friendly, but what have to be done must be done and so I
tell ya:

Fix that problem or I NEVER use any microsoft product on my computers again!

More significantly what are its properties?
Tip: you could use filever.exe /v psapi.dll (in a cmd window)
to provide a capturable list.

That may be a clue that you have a missing dependent module.

You could try using DependencyWalker's Profiler to get a trace of that command
or just trace the command with ProcMon.

Good luck

Well, idiot, I'm not going to fix the problem.
I don't work for Microsoft, never did and never will.
And you haven't paid me anything either.

Your post wasn't entirely clear to me. I assume you did the following, in
order:

1. You slipstreamed SP3 with your WinXP CD and then installed it.

2. Then you installed IE7 and WMP 11.

3. Then you installed all available updates offered by Windows Update.

4. Then you attempted to install BitDefender 10 Free and encountered the
problem with PSAPI.DLL.

Assuming #1 through #3 were done properly:

Have you confirmed that BitDefender 10 Free is supported in WinXP SP3?

Have you contacted BitDefender Support about this?

Sorry, it makes me crazy since BitDefender is not the first program which
has that problem (have tried other programs on another test-installations
before)! Additionally this "Standard"-Answer that completely ignores my post
was the finishing touch of the day.

@robert
As U can read I tried different versions of the dll and so I did check the
version!
A missing depended module,... how? The system wasn't a day old and there
wren't any other programs installed instead of the listed...

@PA Bear
according to Franks first answer I wrote a mail to softwin today hoping they
have a solve for the problem, but like I told BitDefender has no visible
psapi.dll

@robert
the (now) installed psapi.dll has this version:
5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2105)
it is the one from sp3 (I compared with the one extracted from the
download-package)

I also tried version "4.00" and "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"

To avoid confusion, please post separate replies to my posts and quote my
entire post in your reply.

In your first post, you neglected to state that you've encountered the
(same?) problem/error when installing other applications.

Is PSAPI.DLL in fact present in C:\Windows\System 32 folder?

Can you successfully (re)register other DLLs using the regsvr32 command?

Let's start with the easiest of diagnostic tests: If you uninstall IE7 via
Add/Remove Programs *exactly* per the link below (ignore any references to
Vista) and do not reinstall it, does this behavior persist?

Uninstalling IE7
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

[Only use the Command %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot
uninstall 'WIndows Internet Explorer 7' via Add/Remove Programs; it's safe
to ignore any "such-and-such might not work" warnings when you uninstall
IE7.]
