Hey Folks,

Really having some problems over the last couple months with IE 7 and not
sure what to do... Running Updates doesn't give me anything either...
Here are a list of the issues...

1. the icons are changing, like in start up menu (says without add-ons) did
used to say that...
2. The icon on my desktop now only creates shortcuts on my desktop when
double clicked.
3. Runs very slow upon entering a url or using a link to open in another
tab... though I have a connection rate of 10MB/ps so this shouldn't be
happening...
4. a few times a day I get that it's encountered a serious error and has to
close.

I've noticed that I've other issues on my system, which I will be posting in
what I hope will be the appropriate places, but I've basically had challenges
ever since getting my new computer in Dec. 07 which is a Macbook Pro, but I
still prodominately run off the Windows XP Pro OS.

Any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated....

Kitti

Sorry, forgot to mention one last issue here...

5. I also get asked every time that IE does open, whether I want it to be my
"default" as it's not currently my default. I don't have any other browsers
installed that I know of. and when I go to tools and internet options and
programs, I click "make IE my default", but it doesn't activate the Apply
button, so it doesn't "stick", it will just ask again the next time I open a
new window. Any suggestions?

From TaurArian:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Computer_User_Name\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\shell\OpenHome

Resolution:
----------
Delete the LegacyDisable subkey

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. You might have incompatible add-ons:
Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. Read this
article first:
How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
Note that the Reset IE Settings button will delete AutoComplete data (such
as passwords.) Do you have those backed up?

3. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971
Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

You might also try the steps here:

Control Panel | Addor or Remove Programs
Click Set Program Access and Defaults on the left and make sure IE is the
default.
