What is wrong with IE7 under Vista?
I've been trying to follow all the discussions on slow IE7. All the MVP
rsponses seem to follow the belief the IE7 is great and it must be an add-on,
or porxy, or internet that is the problem.
I have been working for myself for over 20 years maintaining PCs and servers
for both companies and home users so I am resonably familiar with PCs.
I have a client with Vista Home Premium. IE7 is a disaster. About 2
minutes to open the home page (google.com.au). About another 5 minutes to
finish(?) loading. About 3 minutes to close once I click the big red X.
Now - no add-ons, no proxy, flushed DNS, RIES, all available updates. All
during this, task manager shows at least 50% CPU (Dual core AMD +4200).
Even closing the window has that 50% CPU. I am assuming the page has
finished loading when CPU gets below 10% CPU. I haven't waited long enough
to get 0% CPU.
Opera is virtually instantaeous.
I have uninstalled firewalls, antivirus, antispyware - no difference.
I would think that if any other application was causing it, its program
would be using the CPU cycles, not iexplore.exe. But iexplore.exe is using
it all.
Thank goodness for Opera. At least the client doesn't think I'm a complete
dummy. I showed him this discussion group. He isn't impressed with IE7
either.
I would like to uninstall IE7 and re-install. But, good old Microsoft
doesn't want me to do that. There doesn't seem to be any way to uninstall.
Not only that, but the MS download site specifically has XP in the IE7
download file name. So it may not work with Vista.
What are the options to fix this, if any?
Or do I just get him to use Opera, and he'll just have to wait all night for
Updates to process?
Come on Microsoft. Show me how to get rid of this crappy program and
install IE6 on Vista. I'm assuming that Vista is OK (?) and IE7 is the
cuplrit. What if I'm wrong? Perhaps all these new PCs being sold with Vista
are going to jam this discussion group until SP1 appears.

"404 errors" and "search results" return incorrect data
If I go to a page that would normally display a "404" or a "page not found
error", I immediately get directed to another webpage. The address bar
always shows the exact address which I typed in (usually a typo of sorts) but
the page displayed is always one of 2 different pages. One is
"http://oqem.com" and the other is "http://yahoopolicycentre.com/" Both of
them are filled with many links to other sites. The links vary each time,
but most of them are porn. This problem seemed to crop up simultaneously
with the upgrade to IE7 from IE6 in WinXP. I know the actual upgrade
couldn't (or at least shouldn't) be the problem, but something did happen at
the same time.
Since the same upgrade, I've also been having problems with almost every
search engine. When I click on any of the returned results, it doesn't take
me to the address listed, but to various search pages. When I click the
back-button, and then click the same link again, it takes me to still another
seach page. After repeating this about 4 times, it usually takes me to the
link that's listed in the results. If I simply type in the address rather
than clicking on the link, I get taken directly to the correct page (provided
of course that I've not mis-spelled something).
I've run several mal-ware removal tools (spybot, ad-aware, spy-sweeper, and
various anti-virus tools) but nothing is ever found. Several people have
suggested that turning off the "friendly error messages" would fix the
problem, but it doesn't.
Does anyone have anoter suggestion that might fix my headaches? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

need help seeing little icons in address bar in IE7
In the IE7 address bar, to the left of the actual internet address, there is
an icon (a little picture). The same icon is also to the left of a name in
the favourites menu and at the top of tabs.
I used to be able to see little pictures as icons that were relevant to the
web page I was viewing eg. the eBay logo as the icon to the left of the eBay
internet address etc.
Now the little pictures have disappeared and I just have the same icon for
everything which is a little white page with a mini page in the middle of it
except for some (but not all) microsoft adresses which has an icon of a white
page with the IE7 blue 'e' on it.
How do I get the pretty picture icons back - please help, I've tried to
change every setting i can think of?!?!

IE 7/Vista incomplete history
If my PC crashes and I go back to IE 7 to retrieve recent pages I was reading
from the history, the most recent pages are not there. In fact only about
half of the expected history links for any given day are there; pages viewed
half an hour or more previously will not be in the history list. How often
are pages written to the history? I could understand pages I'd just opened
not being there, but pages I had opened, read and closed 30 minutes before?
In the last hour I have visited 5-6 domains; only one of them is in the
history.
Also, what happened to the IE7 feature I had in XP where if IE crashed - or
Windows did - I would be prompted with an offer to have the last set of tabs
open? I don't get that in Vista even if I click the option when I close the
browser, let alone when it crashes, which is when it would actually be
useful... Tag: IE7, VB6 WebBrowser Control Tag: 99999

IE7 issue
I help out in the Publisher webdesign group. Now that you have finished
laughing, I am seeing an issue with IE7, that is becoming more common, and
hope someone here can offer some insight as to how to fix it.
Using Publisher a person can preview their site in IE on their computer
prior to actually uploading the html to their web host. Some people who have
"upgraded" to IE7 have lost the ability to preview their website. The sites
will preview, but the images don't load. They get the infamous red x, or an
error message. So far I have had people who are using Pub 2000, 2003 and
2007 report this, and I think XP. I haven't been able to pin down what is
breaking the function.
The best description of an error message I have got so far is "i push the
preview icon, a box comes upsaying it is prepairing a preview when another
window opens and says' publisher cannot generate a picture on page 1 into a
graphic for your web site.' it also says about the graphic being too large
or the computer low on memory. i have 1 gig ram and lots of space on the
hard drive so i don't think its low memory, and the pics are small, and
compressed in jpg format, they are not large file size."
It is not Norton AV, as at least one poster has reported back they do not
have it installed.
It is not Internet options > Advanced > Multimedia and show pictures not
being ticked.
I have IE7 installed on a test partition with XP, but cannot reproduce the
issue, but XP is patched only to SP2.
Anyone have a suggestion as to what setting in IE7 can be changed, or
perhaps which patch that might be automatically installed, that might be
causing this? Thanks.

It's very annoying that I must disable this "prodect mode" first before I

IE dialup setting will not stick

Is there a registry setting for this? Or do I have to delete the Dialup number?

ALLOW users to be able to remove ugly favorite stars.
You need to allow users the to be able To REMOVE those ugly stars that link
to favorites on the command bar.. The only way i found out to do this is add
CommandBar to the registry. and disable it that way, but then you cant use
Tab browsing or they will still show up.. So I Like tab browsing, but HATE
the favorite stars.. So I would reather use FireFox So I get what I want,
Instead of whats forced, People like control and customization and if they
cant find what they want here, they will go were they can.. I know others
feel this way also just search the web, and what could it hurt by making it
an OPTION instead of forcing users to have it on the front page. is there any
other tweaks to remove them?? If not, I would suggest maybe adding this as a
feature to the next update..

IE7 Clumbsy Favorites List
Hi Group,
In IE7, when I point to the bottommost or topmost displayed item in my
favorites list, it does not automatically scroll the remaining items into
view like in IE6. How can I turn on that behavior?
Also, how can I make subfolders in my favorites list fly out to the side? I
don't like having everything stacked vertically because my list of favorites
is about 30 screens tall. And I don't like the fact that expanded
subfolders remain expanded after visiting my favorites list.
How can I changes these behaviors to be more conducive to the way I am

Do not save encrypted pages to disk
I'm interested in details about option "Do not save encrypted pages to disk",
and disk cache in general.
IE supports several protocols for data gathering: http, https, ftp,
gopher,...
When retreived via https, data is decrypted in order to be displayed in
browser.
In that case, automatic cacheing mechanism saves ENCRYPTED pages into
special folder "Temporary Internet files", right? Is there a way to observe
encrypted pages in that cache, or only those that were not encrypted, or were
decrypted (if these are saved that way there at all)?
If pages are cached for performance reasons, wouldn't it be reasonable to
save them decrypted, in order to avoid decryption overhead? Security issue
for saving confidential data to disk exists in any case, unauthorized user
may use brute force method to decrypt files if he has unrestricted access to
them and is willing to do that.
And that's what observed option is used for, to avoid saving confidential
data to disk, if retreived over secure link? Is there the same policy for all
file types (extensions) regarding that matter?
What was the exact MS's intention, which IE behaviour to control with that
option?
It namely affects conscious, intended saving initiated by user too (using
option "Save Target As...", "Save As..."), it affects viewing the page
source, export of data etc. In version 7 it is regular behaviour that this
option has to be turned off to enable this actions, which by the way are used
to save or access DECRYPTED data, definetly. In lower versions, at least in
most of their updates, it is even not possible to save non html content (for
example xml) retreived via https, regardless of this option setting, because
of an obvious bug.
In MS knowledge base there is a workaround for this issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323308/en-us
which suggests that when there is "no cache" directive in http response
header, received over SSL, BypassSSLNoCacheCheck registry entry should be
added. Otherwise, "download is not possible". On the other hand, if the
original intention was to control automatic cache, if IE user is not aware of
that it is necessary to delete cache when downloading confidential data, will
he be aware of, or able, to check/set this option in IE on a public work
station, to protect himself from undesired file saving?
Are there any issues in version 7 with a disk cache? Sometimes I can't
delete temporary
files, sometimes when I delete them, nothing is saved anymore. I never
experienced such things
in version 6. Tag: IE7, VB6 WebBrowser Control Tag: 99853

Outlook 2003 email print scale!
One of my customers have installed IE70 on all clients. Sadly they now have
printing problems in Outlook 2003. First of all they had problems printing
the mail headers on some email. This I fixed by installing the hotfix
addressing this issue on all clients. But they still have a problem printing
some emails. IE70 somehow scales the print of some emails so that the font
gets very small, almost unreadable. Is there a way to stop IE70 from doing
this? I know of the workaround (hit forward and print the mail), but it would
be nice if this is not needed and if printing from Outlook 2003 could be as
sweet as before IE70 was installed :)
Thanx in advance.

desired action. Again stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!

Memory Usage when using Ajax Control Toolkit
Hello,
I am developing a web site using Ajax Control Toolkit with IE6. When the web
site is started the memory usage starts with some value and this value, i.e.,
the amount of memory used by IE6, rises when the time passes.
However, when we use Firefox 2.0 there is no such a problem.
Would you please help me?
Is there anyone who knows about the problem?

dom question ? (no such interface supported)
I am attempting to append a qualified node "copied" from an xml file to a
dom created via the write method
// define document element node
content="<html></html>"
doc=window.frames[0].document
doc.open();
doc.write(content)
doc.close();
doc.documentElement.appendChild(appendobject)
this works fine but when I attempt to append the object I get a script error
indicating "No such interface supported"
the object was created (or rather selected) using selectNode method froom an
xml file
containg tags
<htm:body>
<html:div>
</html:div>
</html:body>
if I display the selected objects' tagName it correctly displays "html:body"
however if I simply display the object then nothing is indicated
results=xmldom.selectNodes(xpath)
appendobject=results[x].childNodes[0]
alert(appendobject.tagName+"i=+appendobject) // "html:body="
my guess is that the interface referred to is the object which appears to
have no reference.
so how do I create it? Tag: IE7, VB6 WebBrowser Control Tag: 99814
IE7 crashes immediately on searching
My wife has IE7 on her XP Home PC. It's apparently been OK since she
upgraded from IE6 a couple of weeks ago, but today she has a serious
problem. As soon as she starts any search, IE7 closes immediately. No
message, nothing.
The search was set to LiveSearch when I first saw the problem. I
changed default to Google, but that hasn't helped.
I cannot help by trying to reproduce the problem on my XP Home PC, as
I have IE6, not IE7, as I use Firefox as my browser.
Hope someone can help us isolate and fix please.
(BTW, is there a group dedicated to IE7, as there is for IE6? My
newsreader couldn't find one.)

ie internet options
I am sorry, I don't know the correct english terms for the functions I want
to talk about. I hope you'll understand me anyway...
In the internet options I instruct the ie, to show as the start-page a blank
one (like it was in the former version called "about: blank"). The system
saves my choice, but when I start ie next time, it opens again the
microsoft-page. How can I avoid this?
Thank you for any good ideas. Tag: IE7, VB6 WebBrowser Control Tag: 99795

Cannot open links on webpages in IE7
Hi,
I'm experiencing a problem (occaisionally and apparently randomly) opening
up links in webpages and from my email.
When I click on the link, a new window opens with an address in the address
bar but, the page is blank. I've read and tried a number of suggestions to
remedy this problem, as it seems others have experienced this too. Nothing
has worked for me.
I also went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679 and re-registered
the files recommended in the article:
â?¢ Urlmon.dll
â?¢ Mshtml.dll
â?¢ Actxprxy.dll
â?¢ Oleaut32.dll
â?¢ Shell32.dll
â?¢ Shdocvw.dll
Troublingly, Mshtml.dll failed! The RegSvr box stated: *Mshtml.dll was
loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can
not be registered.*
Could this be the source of my difficulty?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you,

Major Alert IIS 6.0 Admin and Media Srv Sites inaccessible with IE
After a fresh install of 2K3 Enterprise and IIS the Admin Sites could be
browsed
with a right click in the left IIS-MMC Admin console as IE 6.* was also
installed at that time. access via the default SSL ports were not a problem
until I began updating, all XML and ASP.NET, J#, SunMicro's Java Runtime
which later updated itself to ver 11 from ver 6, and of course IE7. Not quite
sure what the offending Pkg or update is, but this is the redirect page
text.....silly isn't it (No Netscape is installed
on my machine). Either windows update downloaded the runtime or a built in
updater in java ver 6 made the update to ver 11.
Browser not supported
The Windows Media Services Web Administrator requires Netscape version 5 or
later.
You are currently connected using:
Browser: Netscape
Version: 4
You must upgrade your browser before continuing. Click here to download the
latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above just doen't make any sense, if it requires Netscape then why is it
providing a link to get the latest IE browser and detecting a non-existent
Netscape?
Specifying the correct path in an open browser does the same as right clicking
in the "browser paine in the ISS" console for the Admin sites. Either
installation of IE7 is the cause of this or one of the other updates is the
cause. It is an IT Administrative Nightmare if this is the case because every
server running IIS 6.0 with IE7 on 2K3 will or could be administratively
innaccessible, or offline, or even wiped, as the Admin site got wiped out
after uninstalling the updates I noticed the Admin site was gone.
Will post more info as available, I'm currently preparing for reinstallation
of IIS and IE7, then other updates, and if neccessary the OS to determine the
cause of this.

After using IE7 for a while with no problems, now I am unable to download
files of any size without it "timing out". It downloads fine for a couple of
minutes and then errors. It is giving the message "Internet Explorer cannot
download (file name) from (file location) the operation timed out." I am
using XP pro SP2 with all the latest updates. Searched and found no solution,
any ideas? Tag: IE7, VB6 WebBrowser Control Tag: 99782

I'm using the WebBrowser Control in the application I'm developing, randomly
(or sometimes 1ce in 3 attempts) it throws an error "runtime -1 (ffffff)",
any workarounds?
I can't test this as I don't get this problem, but I've read somewhere that you can fix this on your development machine by changing a security setting in IE7. Go to Tools - Internet Options - Security (tab) - Custom levels... (button) and enable "Allow scripting of Internet Explorer web browser control" in the Miscellaneous section.
