Running IE 7 and XP Pro SP2. The problem just started today. When I hold
down the Ctl key and click on a link, IE use to open up a new tab for the
web page. Now it opens a new tab which says Connecting... and a blank page.
If I just click on the link without holding down the Ctl key it goes to the
link. I don't recall making any changes but we all know how that is. Any
ideas as to what the problem is?

I might also add that I have the same problem when running IE with no
add-ons and with all the system defaults reset. I also tried clearing cache.
Also turned off Avast and still no tabs.

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer?s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 *exactly* per the link below (which
automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party
Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this
behavior persist? If it does, do NOT reinstall IE7.

Uninstalling IE7
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html
[Only use the Command %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot
uninstall via Add/Remove Programs!]

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/11/IE7-Installation-and-Anti_2D00_Malware-Applications.aspx

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

5. Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Hi Charlie,

Does this occur on all links? or just on particular sites?

Opening tabs/windows from links within web pages can be effected by your
security settings and the Windows version you are using.

On Vista, if you click a link on a web site that is in the (say) Internet
Zone and the link is to a site that is say in your Restricted Zone, the
Vista/IE7 will only open the link in a new window.

Also, do you have (or previously have had) any other browsers installed on
your computer and set as your default web browser? You can correct this by
making sure that IE is set as your default web browser using the "Set
Program Access and Defaults" (XP) applet. There is an obscure bug with the
Avant Browser which leaves some settings behind when it is uninstalled.

Regards.

I am having the identical problem. MSIE is slow to open links and the tab
function causes the app to simply lock up and stop working. The without
add-ons starts up just fine and the tab function works. I have tried killing
all excess processes but the problem persists.

That sounds like you used Task Manager and focused on other running
programs. Those would be secondary implications from your No Add-ons
result. The first things you should be testing are your other add-ons,
using the Manage Add-ons tool.

Tip: instead of testing all add-ons one at a time you can test them in groups.
E.g. since significant functionality may be lost be disabling add-ons from
Microsoft Corporation and since such add-ons are unlikely to be the cause
of your problem symptom, I would start out by disabling all add-ons except
ones from that Publisher. So, show the list of all add-ons that IE has seen,
sort them by Publisher and disable/enable accordingly. Then test.
Next add back add-ons that you think you may really need and retest.
After that ask yourself if you really need what's left and if not just leave it
until it is ever needed again. If the problem symptom reoccurs after
you enable one you will then have a much better idea of what was causing
it but with much less effort than trying to test all add-ons now one by one.

Good luck

Robert Aldwinckle

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html [Only use the Command
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot uninstall via Add/Remove
Programs!]

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install <= Steps #1-8, #10 &
#11; take note of #12, then STOP!

NB: Use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the

Or Direct Download link:

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.
